Plum (梅花) flowers are well-known for coming out in the coldest winter days. People admire them for keeping strong through hard times. Painters began to draw plum flowers as early as 1,600 years ago. Orchids (兰花) live in mountain areas. They are counted among “China’s Ten Famous” Flowers. They stand for gentle beauty, for their lovely soft look when wind blows through them.
Bamboo looks thin yet strong. It stands for patience and broad-minded spirit. In one of his poems, Su Shi once said “I would rather eat without meat than live without bamboo” to show his deep love for this plant. Brian is thanking his pet for saving his life after he suffered a stroke (中风).
He took the 6-year-old dog named Sadie home from a shelter (收容所) a few months ago. Sadie had been left in the shelter by her earlier owner when he moved, and she was shy and nervous around new people, according to the shelter. But Brian felt a special relationship with Sadie and decided to give her a new home. It turned out to be a life-saving decision.
Brian suffered a stroke last week while home alone with Sadie. Sadie kept Brian awake by licking (舔) his face, and then pulled him across the room to his phone, which he was able to use to call for help.
“Sadie is loyal (忠诚的) and loving to people who have chosen her,” the shelter wrote online. “No one could agree more than Brian, who is alive today thanks to Sadie’s actions.”
Even PETA, an animal rights group, spoke highly of Sadie, saying it was giving her its Loyal Dog Award. “She is my hero, and I love her to death,” Brian said. “I don’t know what I would have done if she hadn’t been there.”
Sadie was staying with Brian’s family while he was in hospital. But they still saw each other on a video call every night.
“Sadie saved Brian’s life,” Colleen, president of PETA, said. “Her story reminds us that many dogs are waiting in shelters for a family to join. And PETA encourages anyone with the ability to care for an animal to give a new home to one from a local shelter.”

Nearly all people have dropped some food on the floor and still wanted to eat it. If someone happened to see you drop it, he or she might have shouted, “3-second rule!” This popular rule says food is OK to eat if you pick it up within three seconds or less. But is there any real scientific truth behind it
To find out the answer, Professor Anthony Hilton from Aston University in the UK, together with his students, decided to test whether the rule works. They carried out plenty of experiments to see how fast bacteria (细菌) can pass from floor surfaces to fallen food. Their results showed that food dropped within three seconds is less likely to get bacteria than if it sits there for a longer time.
For the study, Hilton and his students tested many kinds of foods. They included dry foods like breads and cookies as well as some moist foods like tofu and pudding. They also dropped the food onto different types of flooring, such as carpet (地毯), wooden floor, and tile (瓷砖), to see whether it would lead to different results. What’s more, the food was left on the floor from 3 seconds to 30 seconds.
Not surprisingly, the longer the food was on the floor, the more bacteria it collected. And the type of the floor where the dropped food landed also played a role. Bacteria were more likely to move from wooden floor or tile onto food after more than three seconds. The study also found that the wetter the food, the more likely it was to collect bacteria.
Although most people are happy to follow the 3-second rule, eating food dropped on the floor still carries an infection (感染) risk. “It very much depends on which bacteria is on the floor at the time.” Hilton said.

Longjing tea, also known as West Lake Dragon Well tea, is one of China’s 10 most famous teas. As is known to all, Longjing tea-picking depends largely on manual (手工的) work. But now Longjing tea can be picked by metal workers—tea-picking robots! In one tea garden in Hangzhou, three smart tea-picking robots invented by Zhejiang Sci-Tech University appeared in public.
“Most of the tea pickers are in their 60s and hardly any young people would like to take up the work. So the Longjing tea industry may face problems when there is nobody left to help pick the leaves,” Jia Jiangming, the developer of the robots, said when explaining why his team started to develop tea-picking robots.
The tea-picking robot learns through a specially designed model that offers it a large amount of information about tea leaves. With a pair of 3D eyes, the robot can recognize tea leaves by itself. The robot uses its arms to move back and forth (来回移动) as it searches for tea buds (芽). When it locates(定位) them, it uses a pair of scissors to cut and collect the tea buds.
However, the robot’s picking system needs improving before it can be more widely used. The robot can only take on the work of 1.5 workers at present. Besides, the robot can only be used on flat ground, not on rough (高低不平的) ground.
