As summer draws on, many families may start worrying about back-to-school-related expenses, including school lunch costs. To find out what families may be saving we returned to a survey of school-food prices
Different Lunches, Different Costs
As the data shows, lunch costs vary based on what is packed and there is no one-size-fits-all lunch that day. Boston consulting did the survey and worked for the firm since in 1964. “The survey compared the cost of a typical back-to-school supply for a child’s lunch. Although the school lunch is still the cheapest of the four options, the survey’s new rise in 2025, by 40%, driven higher prices for apple, jelly, and single-serve milk carton (纸盒牛奶).
Packed Lunch May Disappoint
Part of why may be the choice of where to obtain lunch is economics. Prices vary by school level(elementary, middle or high school) and region but at an average of nationwide $6.83, the highest price for a school-prepared lunch can be seen above the cost of bringing one. However, even though school-provided meals are almost always cheaper, nearly 4 in 10(42%) respondents bring their kids lunch from home Why Packed Lunches Appeal
Survey results suggest why. Among various values children brought lunch from home, 69% found it tasted better than the cafeteria food, 67% considered it healthier and 72% more variety. Health was another reason, with 70% of respondents considering packed lunches better and more nutritious than school provided meals.
21. What do respondents consider a reasonable daily lunch price
A. Around $5.00. B. About $6.84. C. Less than $5.98. D. $6.15 on average.
22. Which packed lunch has the least in price
A. Classic lunch. B. Convenience lunch. C. Contemporary lunch.
D. Health & wellness lunch.
23. What does the survey suggest about parents’ lunch choices
A. Families value more than just price.
B. School lunches are becoming popular.
C. Most families prefer cheaper lunch options.
D. Packed lunches appear mainly for their taste.

What I want to say in Section 1, I considered today’s quick lesson: I could find more homework in the time it took my sister, a 10-year-old child. Folding everything at the last minute.
That same process again. I don’t think it’s hard. I waited until the week before for the doctor to prepare. “It’s just some basic knowledge,” I told myself. The next was disappointing my Dad. I knew I’ve gotten on his bad side.
My private teacher, Mr. Chen, noticed my depression. Instead of comforting me, he handed me a small pot with some soil and three seeds. “Plant them,” he said, “and tell me when you see them.”
Confused but excited, I watered the pot every day. Two weeks later, nothing happened. I almost gave up. “Keep going,” Mr. Chen said in the third week, a tiny green shoot (芽) broke through the soil! Then came the second and the third. Within three days both lifted. I suddenly understood what Mr. Chen wanted to teach me.
The lessons in patience are not learned in a single day. If you plant a seed, no matter how hard you work, it won’t have results until way before the harvest.
From that day on, I changed the way I worked. I made a plan at the beginning of each month and finished tasks little by little. My grades improved slowly, but the most valuable thing I gained was self-control. It was the understanding that true study comes from daily effort, not last-minute luck.
24. What was the author’s habit in Section 1
A. Putting off homework till the last minute. B. He promised to complete oral homework.
C. Trying things out until the last moment. D. Spending hours on physics problems.
25. How did the author feel about the physics teacher
A. Proud. B. Disappointed. C. Relieved. D. Surprised.
26. Why did Mr. Chen give the author the seeds
A. To teach him how to grow plants.
B. To help him realize knowledge takes time to grow.
C. To help him pass the exam.
D. To encourage him to study harder.
27. What did the author benefit most from the experience
A. A habit in study. B. The skill of making plans.
C. The understanding of self-effort. D. A habit of growing plants.

There’s little doubt that participating in sports brings many health benefits for kids. According to a recent study, boys who play sports during their early years are less likely to experience emotional stress, including cases of depression and anxiety, and it is connected to boys who take part in sports at school.
“Scientists found a clear connection for the first time, we studied a larger group with their previous sports and health data taken from a long-term survey of 900 boys aged 7 to 18 who were born in 1987 and 1998. The information they looked at was mainly by practice of the children and their biological physical health at 5 years old. They also recorded results from the children’s teachers about signs of emotional stress in the kids from ages 6 to 10 years.
The researchers discovered that participating in sports in preschool helped boys feel fitter, richer, and more confident in teamwork, practicing self-control and building supportive relationships. Besides, they discovered that joining in sports helped boys with their emotional health, and that more physically well-off boys more often stayed in physical activity.
However, the researchers didn’t find any direct relationship between girls’ participation in sports and their emotional health. Scientists said that girls didn’t seem more likely than boys to look for help from family and friends when they were in trouble, which is related to their ability to recover from stress.
While the researchers don’t measure whether the kids felt stressed over good at the sport they joined in, they did measure their physical fitness at age 12. They discovered that boys who had low levels of depression and anxiety signs between ages 6 and10 years were the ones who was the most physically fit at age 12. “We could say the physically active boys have better emotional fitness,” they said.
Dobbe believes schools should provide different after-school sports and physical activities beginning at an early age and including more girls in their study’s winners.”
28. Why does the author mention the children’s early and teachers’ in the survey in paragraph 2
A. To show the only way boys get fit. B. To follow the support for his research.
C. To raise the collected data was reliable. D. To show the information was hard to get.
29. What can we learn about boys who benefit most from sports
A. They are much more physically stronger than boys.
B. They have a better psychological development.
C. They have a larger and better social circle in life.
D. They may suffer emotional stress and feel lonely.
30. What is Dobbe’s advice for parents
A. Sports are limited to children. B. Look for an antidote for children.
C. Get more after-school sports regularly. D. Keep physically active with their children.
31. What is the main idea of the passage
A. It is not safe to do sports at an early age.
B. Exercise helps improve children’s mental health.
C. Sports are more important to boys than development.
D. Boys dislike sports and suffer more anxiety and depression.
D
About 2000 years ago, the Roman philosopher Seneca warned of a curse of attention. “The problem won’t be caused by distractions but by the growing availability of papyrus(莎草纸). As scrolls (卷轴) become more plentiful and readily readers had access to more text than ever before, suddenly moving from one scroll to another! Not much made it easy to stay in one place and spend time with text.”
Years, although the source of information changed, the challenge remains the same. We often blame technology for our inability to focus, but Seneca would have argued that the real problem is elsewhere. Constant jumping from one article to another prevents deep thinking.
Seneca suggested a surprisingly simple solution: instead of reading as much as possible, choose one meaningful idea and really dig into it. “Think deeply repeatedly, connect it with your own experience and allow it to shape the way you understand the world.” According to Seneca, wisdom comes not from collecting ideas but from fully digesting them.
I have followed this practice for many years. One morning, while reading poetry. The breath of an old poem I was struck by the author’s celebration that success and wealth meant little without love, friendship and purpose. I carried that idea with me through the rest of the day. It gradually reshaped my thinking, helping me to connect with my own life.
Seneca compared this process to the way wine made honey. Bees do not simply collect nectar (花蜜) they transform it into something richer and longer lasting. Psychologists describe a similar process as deep processing. When we return to the same idea again and again, our brains connect it with personal experience and store it more firmly in long-term memory. Information probably becomes understanding, and understanding slowly becomes wisdom.
In an age where information is everywhere, many people believe that knowing more means growing more. Seneca reminds us that real wisdom comes from slowing down, thinking deeply and allowing meaningful ideas to become part of who we are.
32. What is the problem Seneca described above
A. Damaging reading habit. B. Worm memory has changed.
C. Reading was once for the rich. D. Technology in Rome was limited.
33. What does the practice of “one meaningful idea each day” lead the author to do
A. Remove the bad habit. B. Regain more books. C. Given the amount of wealth.
D. Write down daily thoughts.
34. What is Seneca’s comparison used to explain
A. The way memory works. B. Who ideas change who we are.
C. How we understand information. D. How information becomes wisdom.
35. Which statement would Seneca agree with according to the passage
A. A book must be read widely. B. Time is the key to knowledge.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. One idea is everywhere a treasure.

The concept of so-called “bodytime” is that over the course of maintaining pride, your physical and mental states do not wait and sleep, so you should adjust your personal timetable and set when each of them is at its best.
36
Of them is a theory of one of its cycles. This thinking dictates (决定) that you are productive only at certain days in a month. It also says you should notice the risks when you passively wait to be at the low end of those cycles.
Once the cycle is over, you will be with a bunch of stuff to do. 37 If you’re genuinely waiting for a birthday to pack, your responsibilities will take over and you will find yourself in a rush.
Scientists have looked into this idea over and over, but the main belief in this phenomenon has led to many more money when some people use it to sell you products. But examples can help you control your own bodytime to maintain your energy, productivity, and happiness.
Now, you might have heard of circadian rhythms(昼夜节律) and seasonal biorhythms are usually the same thing, and biological changes that flow along a day-long cycle and they’re influenced by light and dark. That’s a whole science concept which is attached to this. 38 Once your body stays at night, and you will be woke in daylight to get full, likely, feeling tired.
39 It will be more productive if you get consistent and good sleep. You don’t need to wake people or schedule to go against your biorhythm. Focus on getting quality sleep and maintaining what you are doing during these processes consistent.
A. The pollution is obvious
B. In fact, they are quite different
C. You get tired often when you get dark
D. You should take a break when you feel tired
E. You might think there’s some science behind it
F. So-called “bodytime” isn’t real, but its inspiration does exist
G. Therefore, however, other ways to track your body in productivity

Chen Ming had always been eager to volunteer. When his school organized a weekly reading program at Sunshine Nursing Home, he immediately signed up. Every Saturday morning, he would arrive with a bag full of books, ready to spend the day reading to the elderly residents. Most welcomed him warmly — some even saved extra snacks for him on his visits. But there was one exception: Grandpa Zhang, a retired mathematics teacher who stayed alone and always sat in silence.
During his first few visits, Chen Ming tried various approaches. He would read books on mathematics, offered to play chess, and attempted to start small talks. Each time Grandpa Zhang turned him away without even looking up, and murmured that he didn’t need company. “Leave me alone,” he said, but one day, Chen Ming told Grandpa Zhang that he used to be the happiest man in the nursing home, playing chess every afternoon with his wife. Since she passed away ten years ago, he had withdrawn from the world. “It’s like the light went out of him,” the nurse sighed.
One rainy Saturday, with most residents reading indoors, Chen Ming wandered through the garden and noticed Grandpa Zhang sitting alone on a stone bench. An old chessboard lay on the table, the pieces arranged in a mid-game position. The elderly man was moving them slowly, playing both sides by himself. His fingers trembling slightly as he reached for a chess piece. Chen Ming watched at a distance. The old man was completely focused on the game, yet his eyes carried a sadness. He had to admit, Chen Ming’s heart ached at the sight — he could feel the loneliness in every move.

Dear Editor,
I’m Li Hua, who took part in your summer camp on healthy-living theme one month ago. I’m writing to give some feedback on its activities.
Several activities impressed me most and worked wonderfully. Firstly, the expert lectures on balanced diets were really helpful. They cleared up many misunderstandings about healthy food. Besides, the outdoor morning workouts proved very effective. They motivated us to break away from our bad habit of staying indoors.
I truly enjoyed this meaningful camp and have started to live a healthier life ever since. Thank you for organizing such a great event. I hope you will continue offering these popular activities in future camps.
Yours,
Li Hua

Gathering his courage, Chen Ming approached Grandpa Zhang and asked quietly, “May I play with you ”
Grandpa Zhang looked up, surprised. He seemed ready to refuse. But then something in his eyes softened. “Sit down,” he said coldly. “But don’t expect me to go easy on you.” They played three games that afternoon. Chen Ming lost each one, but Grandpa Zhang was slowly warming up. When Chen Ming made a clever move in the third game, Grandpa Zhang nodded. “Not e back next week—I’ll teach you properly.”
Weeks passed, and a real smile finally appeared on Grandpa Zhang’s face. The garden had become their regular meeting spot. Every Saturday, Grandpa Zhang had the chessboard ready and tried to teach Chen Ming strategies patiently. Between moves, Chen Ming chatted about the weather or asked about Grandpa Zhang’s teaching days. Other residents would smile, surprised to see the once-lonely man so lively. When Chen Ming won his first game, Grandpa Zhang laughed and patted him on the shoulder. “You’re learning fast,” he said warmly.
Chen Ming smiled back, knowing Grandpa Zhang had found his way back to the world.

Nowadays, city construction and planning plays a key role in improving citizens' life quality. Modern urban development follows sustainable, green and people-oriented principles to build more livable cities. Planners create large areas of public green space, such as urban parks, riverside trails, and community gardens, which can clean the air and lower noise pollution. To ease traffic pressure, cities speed up the building of subways, dedicated bus lanes, and cycling paths. Many old neighborhoods are also rebuilt with better facilities like elevators, parking lots and public gyms. In addition, smart systems are used to deal with garbage and save energy; scientific city planning balances development and environmental protection, making urban life more comfortable, convenient, and eco-friendly for everyone.
