During seventh grade, Rynia Kando discovered her talent. It was impersonating Minions(模仿小黄人). “I remember doing an impression for my old best friend, so throughout my childhood I’ve just been doing the Minions,” the 26-year-old tells Empire. In the years that followed, Kando grew her gift into a career in singing, voice acting and more impersonating. Today, her videos imitating everyone from Jennifer Coolidge to the Power puff Girls have earned millions of views on social media.
In late June, Kando got a call that her life had been leading up to. A talent agency had seen her work and wanted to recruit her for a Minionese singing contest. She had just 48 hours to choose a song, rework its lyrics into Minionese, and sing it in front of fans.
She opted for a song. Cooking up the lyrics, for her, was easy. “Throughout years of consuming Minions content you naturally understand what it sounds like so you can kind of cheat it,” she explains. “I used some of the words that they use in the movies, but they use a lot of Spanish, so I knew I had to throw in some Spanish for it to sound accurate.”
On the day, Kando’s performance was the last of the contest. “I remember going out there and kind of dazzling, but in a good way,” she remembers. “I do remember in the middle of my song I started hearing clapping, and I was like, ‘Okay, we’re doing good.’” Everything was a whirlwind(旋风) from there; after being crowned the winner, she met Jeff Bridges, who features in the film, and was awarded a Golden Banana trophy(奖杯), which she proudly shows over our Zoom call. If and when the next Minions movie comes about, could she get another kind of call following her victory “Oh my god, that would be such a dream,” she cries. Twelve-year-old Kando would be proud.
24. What task was Kando required to finish within two days
A. Sign a contract with a talent agency. B. Translate a song’s lyrics into Minionese.
C. Give a singing show for her fans online. D. Shoot a Minions imitation video.
25. Why did Kando add Spanish words to her contest lyrics
A. To make the Minionese more authentic. B. To show her passion for Spanish.
C. To attract Spanish-speaking judges. D. To follow the contest’s official rules.
26. How did Kando feel during her halfway performance
A. Annoyed. B. Disappointed. C. Relieved. D. Shocked.
27. What is Kando’s biggest wish after winning the contest
A. To receive more Golden Banana trophies. B. To cooperate on the next Minions film.
C. To do live shows with Jeff Bridges. D. To become a professional voice actor.

Many people believe that family wealth shapes a child’s future, yet a growing number of studies prove that parental mindsets carry greater weight. Wealth can fade over time, but ways of thinking and values passed from parents leave lasting marks on young people. Research published in The Atlantic on family education points out that parents’ cognitive patterns influence how kids view challenges, opportunities and self-worth from an early age.
Cognition is not equal to high academic degrees or huge incomes. It refers to how parents handle setbacks, judge choices and treat the unknown. A parent who fears risks may repeatedly warn children against failure, while an open-minded adult will encourage exploration. A Stanford University long-term tracking study finds that parents with flexible thinking are more likely to raise children brave enough to try new things in life.
Daily conversations at home quietly build a child’s inner world. If parents often complain about reality and blame external conditions, kids tend to become passive and pessimistic. On the contrary, families focusing on self-improvement teach youngsters to take responsibility for their own growth. These invisible family messages gradually form a child’s way of dealing with difficulties in school and social situations.
It does not mean well-off families always produce outstanding kids, nor does it mean ordinary families have no hope. Financial resources offer convenience, but narrow-minded parents may waste those advantages easily. Many ordinary families create amazing growth for their children simply by keeping a learning attitude. The real gap between families rarely lies in money, but in vision and thinking boundaries.
Adults with limited cognition tend to fix their life paths and impose their unfulfilled dreams on children. They set rigid standards for success and cannot accept different life choices. Psychological research quoted by Nature Human Behaviour suggests that open-minded parents respect kids’ independent decisions instead of forcing their personal expectations onto the next generation.
28. What matters more to children’s future according to many new studies
A. Parents’ financial resources. B. Parents’ academic degrees.
C. Parents’ unfinished dreams. D. Parents’ ways of thinking.
29. What can we infer from Paragraph 3
A. Parents’ words shape children’s character subtly.
B. Pessimistic parents seldom affect their children’s mood.
C. Kids from wealthy families perform well at school.
D. External conditions may determine children’s growth.
30. Why can some ordinary families make their children achieve great progress
A. They have hidden huge wealth. B. They copy the rich’s parenting methods.
C. They send kids to the best schools. D. They keep a lifelong learning mindset.
31. What does the underlined word “impose” in the last paragraph mean
A. Force somebody to accept something. B. Recommend something to others warmly.
C. Exchange one thing for another. D. Give away something voluntarily.
D
Bees are tiny but powerful heroes of our natural world. They pollinate(授粉) flowers, fruit trees and farm crops. Without bees, many plants could not produce fruits and seeds. Yet city development, pesticide use and limited green space have caused sharp drops in bee populations across many regions.
More wild bee species are struggling. As cities spread, wild meadows are cleared to make room for roads and apartment blocks. Homeowners often clear away native wild flowers, favouring neatly cut lawns instead. Chemical pesticides used in parks and private gardens further poison these hard-working insects. For years, few city planners gave a thought to bee survival.
In recent years, however, more city-residents have started to take action to help bees. Some citizens plant bee-friendly flowers on balconies and rooftops. Local parks are replacing decorative grass with native wild plants. Some communities even set up small beehives in public gardens, under the guidance of experienced beekeepers.
Urban bee projects have brought wonderful results. They help local plants grow better and improve city biodiversity. Many local children get a chance to watch bees closely and learn about plant-insect relationships. These projects also raise public awareness of wildlife protection.
Experts remind us that city bee projects need careful planning. Poisonous chemical pesticides must be avoided completely. People should pick local plant species, not foreign ones. We do not need large wild areas. Even small pieces of green space can offer safe homes for bees.
Small efforts in cities can support bee recovery. When ordinary people join together, they can make urban spaces friendlier not only for bees, but for all sorts of wildlife.
32. What is one of the causes of the sharp decline in bee populations
A. Fewer beekeepers. B. Urban development.
C. Too many native flowers. D. Recovery of urban wildlife.
33. How is Paragraph 3 mainly developed
A. By listing results. B. By making comparisons.
C. By giving examples. D. By quoting sayings.
34. What does the author imply about small green spaces in cities
A. They can effectively help bee survival. B. They are ineffective for wildlife protection.
C. They should be turned into farmland. D. They cannot replace wild meadows.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. The Disappearance of Wild Insects B. Introducing Bees to Improve Biodiversity
C. Bringing Bees Back to Our City D. The Importance of Pesticide Ban

In the age of social media, many people have become used to sharing everything online. A meal, a relationship argument, or even private family moments can quickly appear on public platforms. 36 However, over time, overexposure may slowly blur the boundary between personal life and public performance.
Some people post constantly because they want to feel understood or valued. 37 According to communication studies discussed in international media reports, oversharing online can increase emotional pressure and make people depend too much on external validation. The more someone seeks approval from others, the harder it becomes to feel emotionally stable alone.
38 A moment of emotional posting may disappear from your mind after a few days, but screenshots and impressions can remain for years. Many people later regret exposing their relationship problems, financial stress, or personal struggles online. Many people later regret exposing their relationship problems, financial stress, or personal struggles online. Some stories are better discussed with trusted friends instead of strangers on the internet.
Research from psychology journals has shown that people who constantly compare their lives online often experience higher anxiety and lower satisfaction. 39 Once people become used to receiving attention online, they may start shaping life around what looks impressive instead of what genuinely feels meaningful.
Mature people understand that privacy is not secrecy; it is protection. Not every achievement needs to be announced, and not every sadness needs an audience. 40 Some of the happiest people are not those who share the most online, but those who know how to separate public image from private emotional life.
A. Real peace often grows quietly.
B. Yet not everyone watching truly cares about your happiness.
C. We can post beautiful photos to attract more followers easily.
D. Another problem is that the internet remembers almost everything.
E. Social media platforms are making strict rules to protect users’ privacy.
F. At first, sharing feels relaxing because it brings attention and interaction.
G. Interestingly, oversharing can also create this comparison cycle for yourself.

Pham, an ordinary running enthusiast, took part in the Long Beach Half Marathon last month. As a regular runner who kept exercising to strengthen his body, he had long looked forward to this event. He hoped to challenge himself, finish the 21-kilometer race smoothly, and enjoy the simple pleasure and freedom that running brought him. Full of confidence and excitement, he started the race with thousands of other runners on the sunny morning.
Everything went well in the first half of the race. Pham kept a steady pace, breathing calmly and enjoying the lively atmosphere along the track. However, near the 10-kilometer mark, extreme tiredness suddenly swept over his body. Before he could react, sharp pain struck his chest. Dizzy and weak, he suddenly fell heavily to the ground, suffering from an unexpected severe heart attack.
The sudden accident instantly aroused chaos among the crowd. Spectators and fellow runners around him froze and panicked. Most of them were ordinary people with no professional medical knowledge, not knowing how to offer standard first aid properly. They could only stare anxiously, feeling helpless in the face of the dangerous emergency.
By incredible pure chance, Dr. Chiu, an experienced cardiac surgeon, was having brunch at a seaside restaurant nearby with his friends. Originally, he had planned to finish his meal and leave early to return to his work. Yet his friends persuaded him to stay for several more minutes to appreciate the beautiful ocean view and gentle sea breeze. It was this tiny and casual delay that enabled him to witness this life-threatening emergency just outside the restaurant window.

Paragraph1: Without hesitation, Dr. Chiu rushed over to Pham immediately. He shouted at the crowd to keep back to secure enough room for rescue. Kneeling down, he quickly examined Pham and confirmed he had no pulse due to the severe heart attack. Without delay, he started performing CPR skillfully. Some people dialed 911 for an ambulance while others offered to block the sun for the patient. Sweating through his shirt, Dr. Chiu kept the first-aid movements steady, fully concentrating on bringing the unconscious runner back to life. The anxious crowd watched silently, praying for a miracle to happen.
Paragraph2: Minutes later, the ambulance arrived. Well-equipped medical workers hurried off the vehicle and took over the emergency treatment. After attaching professional medical devices to Pham, they carefully lifted him onto the stretcher (担架) and loaded him into the ambulance. Owing to Dr. Chiu’s instant and expert on-site rescue, Pham showed weak vital signs before transportation.
Later, it was reported that Pham had recovered and was out of danger. People spoke highly of Dr. Chiu, for that brief stay enjoying ocean views accidentally made a life-saving difference.

M: Starting a vegetable garden on a balcony can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Here are some essential tips to help you get started. Firstly, consider the amount of sunlight your balcony receives. Most vegetables need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. If your balcony faces south, you’re in luck, as it can get plenty of sunlight. Next, it’s crucial to water the vegetables correctly. Vegetables need enough water, but overwatering them can be harmful. Make sure that there are several holes at the bottom of your pots and water the plants when the top inch of soil is dry.
Fertilizing is another important aspect of balcony gardening. Using a balanced fertilizer is recommended. Typically, you should fertilize the soil every couple of weeks.
Pest control is a common concern for balcony gardeners. Natural solutions can effectively manage pests--planting companion herbs can help drive away unwanted insects.
For beginners, it’s best to start with easy-to-grow vegetables like cherry tomatoes, lettuce or herbs. Avoid challenging crops like sweet corn and eggplant.
By following the above tips, you can create a thriving vegetable garden on your balcony.
