七、阅读理解
On Monday, I stopped my car in front of my son David’s middle school. He jumped onto the back seat and he asked me to help his study for his chemistry test.
“Mom, I need to remember all the chemistry experiments. And I can hardly make it.”
“You know, memorizing seems like the best way to study, but in fact you can do better in exams if you work on trying to understand the knowledge.”
David was open to my advice. it was Monday afternoon and we had two nights to study before the test on Wednesday. I suggested a plan. “Tomorrow night, you are going to teach the chemistry experiments to me. Tonight, read the textbook. Prepare to teach.”
Asking him to teach me was an unusual idea, but I made a decision to do it. Studies show teaching somebody else is a very useful way to learn. Even if you don’t do the teaching, the act of preparing to teach leads to more learning than just trying your best to memorize the knowledge.
On Tuesday afternoon, David sat down with his chemistry book facing me and said, “Okay Mum, let’s study.” I wanted him to teach me. But false starts happened. I couldn’t be too hard on him. So instead we started with me asking him some simple questions. He knew some but not others. When he didn’t know the answers, I encouraged him to check the book.
He started checking things that didn’t make sense. And he was actively trying to test his understanding. I was happy to see it. He wasn’t memorizing; he was trying to make sense of things, which was exactly what I had hoped he would do.
1.Why did David ask his mother to help his study for his chemistry exam
A.Because he didn’t pass the chemistry test.
B.Because he had trouble remembering the chemistry experiments.
C.Because he knew little about the chemistry experiments.
D.Because he couldn’t understand his teacher in class.
2.In the mother’s opinion, which was the best way to study
A.Memorizing. B.Testing. C.Questioning. D.Understanding.
3.The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refers to “__________”.
A.making him remember the knowledge B.asking him some simple questions
C.asking him to teach me D.encouraging him to check the book
4.What does the writer mean by saying “I couldn’t be too hard on him.” in Paragraph 6
A.It was hard for me to understand David.
B.It was hard for David to make me understand him.
C.I should be strict with David.
D.I should be patient with David.
5.Which can be the best title for the passage
A.A Creative Mother B.Difficult experiments
C.Learning from Teaching D.Preparing for Teaching

I learnt how to create a speech outline. Instead of trying to remember every word of my speech, I remembered the key words first. Then I formed images of these key words in my mind, and linked them in order.
Another method is to divide the speech into short sections. I practised the first section until I could fully recall it. Then I moved on to the next. This helped me to find out which parts of the speech I needed to work on the most.
Finally, a friend told me that I should have confidence in myself. Nobody knows my speech except me. If I do forget some words, I shouldn’t panic. Just remember the key words and continue!

1.How does Billy organize the methods
A. In order of time
B. From causes to effects
C. By comparing different speeches
D. By using linking words and giving steps
2.What does Billy include when introducing each method
A. A method and the steps to use it
B. A question and an answer

Discuss and say
Among the three methods the writer learned, which one do you think is the most useful Give your reasons.
I think creating a speech outline is the most useful. If we only remember key words and link them in order, we don’t need to memorize every word. It makes memorization much easier.
I think dividing the speech into short sections is the most useful. We can practise one part at a time. It helps us find out which parts we need to improve.
I think having confidence in ourselves is the most useful. Even if we forget some words, we won’t panic. We can continue with the help of key words.

Yes, I once forgot lines when sharing in class. I spent too much time memorizing every single sentence. Next time I will make an outline and remember only key words to retell my ideas freely.

My biggest memory challenge is memorizing English words. I spend lots of time reciting them every day, but I always forget them quickly after one day. My goal is to remember new words firmly and use them correctly in sentences.
First, I will make word lists with key meanings and draw simple pictures beside each word. Pictures can help me link words with clear images in my mind.
Another helpful method is to divide 20 new words into 4 small groups. I will learn one group well before moving on to the next, so I can find out which words are hard for me.
Finally, I should be confident and not get upset when I forget words. I can review the word lists every night instead of feeling worried.
If I stick to these three useful methods, I believe I will make great progress in memorizing words. I learn that small and proper ways can help us beat our memory challenges.

Friday, 27 July
I have been troubled by a memory challenge for a long time. In the past, I used to spend much time memorizing English words. No matter how hard I tried, I easily forgot them soon. I wondered whether I could find proper solutions.
Recently, I have come up with three practical methods to deal with this problem.
To begin with, I will group similar words together. Rather than memorize word lists one by one, I choose to learn words in short sentences.
What’s more, I am going to divide new words into small groups. I will keep reviewing them regularly. This is helpful for me to fight against forgetting.
Most importantly, I realize that reviewing on time is important. Once I mix up similar words, I should not feel upset. Instead, I can compare their differences and write them down.
There is no one-size-fits-all method. I will keep trying and find what works best for me. I’m looking forward to seeing my improvement.
