Imagine this: You had a late soccer game, and you’re hungry. Your mom agrees to stop by a pizza shop on the way home. It’s closing soon, but all of your favorite slices are still available. Phew! This is great news for you. But according to Chris MacAulay, it’s bad news for the environment.
When we go to a pizza shop at closing time expecting a full selection, or when we pick only the best apples at a grocery store, “We’re creating our own problem,” MacAulay, the vice president of operations in North America for Too Good To Go whose aim is to limit food waste, told TIME for Kids.
Too Good To Go wants extra food to land somewhere other than in the trash. The idea started in Denmark about a decade ago. Now Too Good To Go is the world’s largest marketplace for extra food.
The company connects people and businesses through an app. Users can search a map to find participating restaurants and grocery stores in their area. For a low price, businesses offer surprise bags or boxes of extra food. These can contain anything from pizza slices to baked goods. Users claim and pay for a bag or box, and then pick it up before the business closes for the day.
The app has more than 100 million users worldwide. “The more success we have at helping customers pick up a surprise bag, the more we’ve achieved our vision of ending food waste,” MacAulay says.
How can kids help reduce food waste “Get interested in food and where food comes from.” MacAulay suggests. “Participate in understanding how food ends up on the plate.” This can mean going on family grocery outings or being more thoughtful about portions. “Once you start to see the amount of waste, it’s really hard to unsee,” MacAulay says.
24.Why is the great news for you considered “bad news” for the environment
A. It reveals poor food service. B. It shows potential food waste.
C. It suggests uncertain food safety. D. It reflects weak food demand.
25.How does Too Good To Go work to reduce food waste
A. By advertising food in surprise boxes. B. By recycling restaurant’s wasted food.
C. By producing less food in the first place. D. By offering customers extra food information.
26.What is MacAulay’s advice for kids
A. To go on family outings. B. To support Too Good To Go.
C. To learn about food’s journey. D. To embrace a zero-waste lifestyle.
27.What can we learn from Too Good To Go
A. Still waters run deep. B. Time and tide wait for no man.
C. Trash can become treasure. D. Every cloud has a silver lining.
(共4小题,每小题2.5分,满分10分)
A few years ago, I stood in a small classroom just outside of New York City, watching a senior high student named Serena Stevenson answer math questions. A teacher read out numbers — 74,470,70,809,98,402 — and Stevenson added them in her head. For each question, she closed her eyes, and then the fingers of her right hand began to move. She answered most of the problems correctly.
The key to her success was an ancient technology called the abacus(算盘). Stevenson used a practice called “mental abacus”, imagining the abacus in her mind and then using her fingers to figure out the problems.
From watching Stevenson, I knew that gaining skill at the abacus was more than a matter of counting beads (珠子), so I decided to sign up for an abacus course with my two daughters to see if we could also improve our math skills. I was one of the many who had some math doubts and I felt a touch of fear. My typical solution was to escape, and if I had to calculate something challenging, I would go online.
Then after a few abacus classes and a good amount of practice, math seemed a little less frightening. I didn’t become Euclid, the founder of geometry (几何学). But the practice eased my fear of numbers. According to one study, people who learn abacus tend to gain confidence easily and are less likely to be nervous about an approaching math test. Part of the reason, it seems, is that good outcomes can’t turn up without practice. My kids gained much as well. My youngest daughter could work out those math problems that once baffled her, while my older child brought her abacus to school to show it to her classmates and teacher. These were just small successes for them, but that was how they finally developed confidence.
28.What is the main purpose of the first paragraph
A.To prove the difficulty of math.
B.To introduce the topic of the abacus.
C.To show the high intelligence of Stevenson.
D.To stress the importance of abacus learning.

A.He was weak in math.
B.He was good at computers.
C.He regarded math as useful.
D.He had a close relationship with kids.
30.What does the author realize from his learning experience
A.Faith can move mountains. B.Practice makes perfect.
C.Knowledge starts with practice. D.It’s never too late to learn.
31.What does the underlined word “baffled” in the last paragraph mean
A.Bored. B.Inspired. C.Defeated. D.Interested.

Since childhood, fried chicken had been my favorite food for some twenty years. I would have it at least three times a week, whether it was from a fast-food joint, a local diner, or even homemade. I planned my outings around places that served delicious fried chicken. There were times when I tried to cut back on it, especially when I started to gain some weight, but I always ended up giving in to my desire within a few days.
This year, a series of events changed my relationship with fried chicken forever. I began experiencing frequent stomachaches. Doctors couldn’t directly link these problems to fried chicken, but I noticed that every time I ate it, my discomfort worsened. Additionally, I started to realize that the once-mouthwatering smell and taste now left a heavy, greasy feeling in my mouth that I couldn’t ignore. One evening, after finishing a large bucket of fried chicken, I felt so sick that I couldn’t sleep well all night. That was the turning point. I decided that it was time to quit.
Why was it so hard to let go before Is there really something addictive in fried chicken While there’s no official “fried chicken addiction” listed in medical books, experts point out factors that could contribute to its allure. Dr. Johnson from a nutrition research center mentions two main elements: the high-fat content and the combination of spices, which makes us feel good and makes us want more. Gradually this circle becomes habitual over time.
Now, I’m on Day 35 of my “fried-chicken-free” journey. The first week was hard. I had strong desire and even felt a bit down at times. But as the days passed, I started to feel better. My stomach problems became less frequent, and I even noticed that I had more energy. I’m really proud of myself for breaking this long-standing habit. If I can overcome my love for fried chicken, I believe I can overcome any other challenging habit in my life.
32. What can we know about the author from Paragraph 1
A. The author ate fried chicken occasionally.
B. The author had a deep and long-lasting love for fried chicken.
C. The author never worried about the health risks of eating fried chicken.
D. The author successfully reduced the intake of fried chicken several times.
33. What led the author to give up fried chicken
A. A doctor’s direct warning about health.
B. The advice on a healthier diet from a friend.
C. A newfound dislike for the smell of chicken.
D. Health problems and an unpleasant feeling after eating.
34. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “allure” in Paragraph 3
A.attraction B.combination
C.production D.appreciation
35. How does the author feel about giving up fried chicken
A.Satisfied. B.Confused. C.Annoyed. D.Impressed.

The homemade book bag was placed across my bed. It seemed to fill almost the entire room. I knew that my mom had spent all day happily sewing as she pictured me proudly walking from class to class with it over my shoulder. The next day I was to start seventh grade at a new school, in a new state. I had no friends and was afraid that this big, ugly, hand-sewn bag would make me stand out even more than I already did.
I stared at the bag, feeling a mix of anger and embarrassment. It was bright yellow, with a big red heart on the front. My mom had even added a matching yellow ribbon to the zipper. I thought about hiding it, but I knew my mom would be heartbroken if she found out. She had worked so hard to make it for me.
The next morning, I reluctantly slung the bag over my shoulder and walked to school. As soon as I entered the classroom, I noticed several students staring at my bag. I quickly sat down at a desk in the back, hoping to avoid attention. But it was no use. During lunch, a group of girls walked over to me. “What’s in the bag ” one of them asked, pointing. I could feel my face turning red.
“Just some books,” I mumbled, looking down at my food.
“Let us see,” said another girl, reaching for the bag. I pulled it away, but she grabbed the strap. The bag fell to the floor, and my books spilled out. Everyone around us started laughing. I wanted to crawl into a hole and disappear.
Just then, a girl named Debbie walked over. She was new too, but she seemed to have already made friends. “Leave her alone,” she said to the other girls. They looked at her, surprised, and then walked away. Debbie helped me pick up my books and put them back in the bag.
“Your bag is unique,” she said with a smile. I blushed, hesitated for a moment and then replied in a low voice, “Just some ordinary things, nothing special.” Debbie looked at me and said, “I see. I thought it was something really interesting. You know, we were all curious about your bag.”
Paragraph 1:
She then began to talk about how everyone in the class had their own unique things, and that’s what made us all special.

Paragraph 2:
Debbie’s words changed everything for me.

She then began to talk about how everyone in the class had their own unique things, and that’s what made us all special. “Look at my shoes,” she said. “My grandma painted them. And Tom’s pencil case was made by his sister.” She pointed around the room, smiling. “Your bag is no different. It carries your mom’s love.” I looked down at the bright yellow bag again. The big red heart no longer seemed embarrassing. It felt warm, like a hug. I touched the yellow ribbon and told Debbie my mom had made it for me. “Then you should be proud,” she said softly.
Debbie’s words changed everything for me. The next morning, I walked into class with the bag over my shoulder and my head held high. The girls who had laughed looked away. At lunch, Debbie sat beside me, and soon others joined us. I even showed them the small pocket my mom had sewn inside. Nobody laughed. Instead, they said it was cool. From then on, I learned that being different is not something to hide. The bag became my favorite gift, and Debbie became my first real friend.
