Jim and Tom were twin brothers. They looked so alike that even their mother found it difficult to tell one from the other. Still, they were quite different from each other when it came to everything other than their looks. Jim was friendlier, while Tom was really good at making friends. Jim loved sweets, but Tom loved spicy food and desserts. Jim was Mommy’s pet and Tom was Daddy’s pet. While Jim was generous and selfless, Tom was greedy(贪婪的) and selfish!

He asked them to walk as long as they could, and return home before sunset. The wealth would be divided according to the distance they covered. But they were not allowed to carry a watch to keep track of the time.
The following day, Jim and Tom set out to walk. It was a rather sunny day. Jim walked slowly and steadily, while Tom began to run fast as he wanted to win so much. Jim knew that it would be perfect to walk as far as possible till noon and start for home at noon as it would take the same amount of time to walk back home. Knowing this, Jim decided to turn back for home at noon so as to reach home on time.
However, Tom, with his greed to earn more wealth, did not try to return home even after mid - noon. He walked twice as long as Jim, and thought he would still be able to return home before sunset. He hurried back when he saw the sun turn orange. Unluckily, he could not even make it half way home as the sun started to set. It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little frightened on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let’s find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often read classroom rules and school rules to you so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Please pay close attention.
You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day, but it’s a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t know. Make the first move and you’ll be glad you did, and so will your new friends!
Seeing friends you haven’t seen for some time can make the first day a good one. You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers. It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll need. But make sure that you pack them the night before in case you don’t have time in the morning.
28. What does the underlined phrase “kick off” in the second paragraph probably mean
A. Start. B. Study. C. Find. D. Teach.
29. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us about
A. What to know about a new school. B. How to prepare for a new school.
C. What to do on your first day of school. D. How to spend your first day of school.
30. According to the passage, you usually do the following things on the first day of school except .
A. introduce yourself B. learn about the school rules
C. make new friends D. go over your new lessons
31. If you happen to see an old friend on the first day of school, what will you feel from the passage we know
A. Nervous. B. Sad. C. Happy. D. Worried.

Scientists say they have discovered three new species of fish in one of the deepest places on Earth.
All the three species were found in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Chile and Peru. They were deep in the Atacama Trench — 7,500 meters below the surface.
Researchers from Britain’s Newcastle University say the new species have been given temporary names based on their coloring. They are known as “the pink, the blue and the purple Atacama Snailfish(狮子鱼)”.
The three snailfish species are different from most other fish. Their unusual bodies are built to deal with the cold water and extreme pressure deep in the ocean.
All three are small and transparent, meaning light can pass through their skin. They also have no scales(鳞) on the skin for protection.
Other scientists say the “blue” Atacama Snailfish appears to be a rare “winged” snailfish. But it has long fin(鳍) and big head similar to the Ethereal Snailfish off the coast of Mariana Islands.
The “pink” is closer in appearance to the Mariana Snailfish, a species found in the deepest part of Mariana Trench on the other side of the Pacific Ocean.
The third species is a small purple snailfish. It is similar to the fish living at the depth of 3,500 meters. One of the purple snailfish, about 9 centimeters long, was brought to the surface for further study.
From the video shot by the scientists of Newcastle University, Linley said, “There is something about the snailfish that allows them to adapt to living very deep. Beyond the reach of other fish they are free of competitors and predators(捕食者).”
32. What causes the special bodies of the three new species of fish
A. The cold water. B. Great pressure beneath the deep sea.
C. Many competitors and predators. D. Both A and
33. What does the underlined word “transparent” in Paragraph 5 refer to

34. Which fish is similar to the Mariana Snailfish

C. The blue Atacama Snailfish. D. The purple Atacama Snailfish.
35. What’s the main idea of the text
A. Species of fish and predators.

D. Three new fish species found in the Pacific Ocean.

Dear Peter,
I am sorry to hear that you are in a bad mood and almost lose heart because you can’t adapt to life in senior high school. I understand how you feel now. So I’d like to share with you some ways to cope with such awful situations.
First, you’d better set a study goal. Only in this way can you build up your confidence in study. Second, it is wise for you to develop a pleasant relationship with your classmates. When you are in trouble, they will surely give you a helping hand. Besides, you can participate in some extra-curricular activities. It will offer you good chances to make friends.
I hope my suggestions will be helpful.

听力原文
1.
M: Do you go to work by taxi every day
W: Well, my company is so close to my flat that I often walk there, except when I'm in a hurry. I seldom take a bus. It's too crowded.
M: I prefer to go to work by subway.
2.
W: Excuse me, is there a park around here
M: Yes, follow the path running along the river to the bridge. You will see it beside a white building.
3.
M: After graduation, I want to be a doctor. What about you, Laura
W: Well, I'd like to be a painter. I love painting, but it's hard to make a living as a painter.
4.
M: I've invited some of my friends to my birthday party and I hope I can see you at the party.
W: Oh dear, I almost forgot. When is it
M: Well, you know it's the day after the first of April. Easy to remember, isn't it
W: Yes indeed. I'll turn up on time.
5.
M: Father's day is coming. How do you plan to celebrate it
W: Well, we have a tradition in my family. Instead of buying gifts, we usually have a family gathering. Everyone prepares a dish to share.
6.
W: Mum gave us 20 dollars for shopping. She told us to buy bread, milk and butter. Do you think we have enough money
M: Well, let's see. The bread costs five dollars, the milk costs three dollars and the butter costs five dollars. What does all of that add up to
W: That is equal to 13 dollars. We will still have some money left. Why don't we buy some puddings with our change
M: Yeah, that would be great. I love puddings.
7.
W: Good morning, Ben. How do you feel today
M: I think I'm quite all right. I didn't expect to be out so soon.
W: You've recovered quite well.
M: If so, I may take part in the sunshine walk at the end of the month.
W: Sunshine walk If you mean the 10-day walking holiday, I'm afraid, Ben, you are not able to join in. According to the X-ray, your bones are still very weak. I don't think you can continue walking for such a long time.
M: That's really a piece of bad news. Well, I'll have to be patient then.
8.
M: How are you Lucy What's up
W: Well, it's raining like mad outside and the weather report says it'll be windy later today, so we can't go biking like we planned. I thought we might watch the football game on TV this afternoon. What do you think
M: Sounds like a good idea, but I'm going to take advantage of the weather and clean up my room.
W: You just gave me an idea, Jim. I think I'll do the same. My mum will be happy.
M: And we can enjoy the football game later. Which team do you want to win
W: I always like to choose state college, sometimes state youth team. What's your favorite
M: My dad likes St Martin's so I've grown up as a fan of them.
9.
W: Paul, you're the only child in your family. How do you feel about that
M: I'm an only child and I was, um, happy. As a young child. I was very lucky. I had 14 cousins and most of them lived in the same town that I grew up in until I was 10. So we all played together and studied together. I suppose it wasn't until we moved away from there that I think it became difficult being an only child. When I was a teenager I was on my own and I had nobody to compare notes with or to prepare for the exam with, and I think it was quite hard really. Although I did had all of my parents' attention, I didn't always want it. I wanted to move away from my family a little bit. And have a desire for independence.
W: What about now
M: Er, I think it's probably, again, quite difficult, really. Er, my father died about 10 years ago, so of course I'm the one who's left totally responsible for my mother. I'm the one that looks after her if she has a problem. There's nobody else to help at all.
10.
W: Hi. I'm Sonia Tarrington, a researcher at the university of California's nutrition research center. Today, let's talk about how to eat well. What's the secret to eating well Well, it's not about strict diets. You can eat the same amount as before, just focus on mixing the right foods. For example, adding one extra vegetable to your main meal makes a big difference. Now, if you're someone who eats chocolate or cakes, here's a tip. Change those for fruit or healthy options. It's common sense, but many overlook it. Then let's address another question. Why avoid fries and burgers The answer is simple. Red meat and fried foods are less healthy. Instead, choose white meat like chicken. Fish is another key. Yes, even if you hate it, try eating it once or twice. Weekly fish is nutrient rich. Trust me, your body will thank you. In addition to these tips, some research shows that increasing fruit and vegetable intake can reduce cancer risk by up to 20%. So fill your plate with fresh produce. It's a small change with lifelong benefits. Remember, healthier choices aren't about cutting out everything you enjoy. It's about making smarter changes, one step at a time.
