Not even a flooded river could stand between Mary Breckinridge and the hospital her patients needed. A heavy rain damaged the banks beside Mary Breckinridge’s clinic, Wendover, Kentucky. She had to find a way to get her five patients to the hospital in Lexington.
With a neighbor’s help, Mary and the nurses built a boat. They named it Ambulance, and on the morning of December 30, 1926, Mary, another nurse, and the patients set off down the river. After sixteen wild miles on the dangerous river, they arrived at the train station in Krypton. As she watched the train pull away with her patients safely on board, Mary smiled and waved.
Mary had not planned to be a nurse. She was the daughter of a wealthy Kentucky politician. As a child, Mary was influenced by her family who had always been worried about the poor people of the state. When she grew up, Mary was inspired to become a nurse. So in 1925 Mary hired a few British-trained nurses and, with some money from her family, started the Frontier Nursing Service in Wendover, Kentucky.
Before Mary and her nurses came, the mountain people lived a hard life. Families made so little money that they could not afford doctors or medicine. Many children had diseases and nearly every person was in bad health for lack of food.
Mary and the nurses built clinics and a small hospital deep in the forests of Leslie County. There were no paved(铺好的)roads, electricity, or telephones. Each day the nurses rode on horseback to faraway farms, often in bad weather, to answer calls for help. They worked hard to take care of their patients.
To the grateful mountain people, Mary and the nurses seemed to be everywhere. They treated everything from cut fingers to pneumonia(肺炎)and delivered babies. The proud countrymen liked the nurses because they treated everyone with respect.
The Frontier Nursing Service grew. Today their nursing service reaches far beyond the Kentucky mountains. Medical professionals from all over the world come to Wendover to study rural(乡村的)health care in action. When these men and women go back to their own countries, they are prepared to help people in need.
24. How did Mary Breckinridge get her patients to Krypton
A. By train. B. By car. C. By water. D. On horseback.
25. Why does the writer tell the story in the first two paragraphs
A. To describe the daily challenges of rural life in Kentucky.
B. To give a general summary of Mary’s great achievements.
C. To provide a specific example of Mary’s strong will and helpful action.
D. To explain the primary cause of Mary’s decision to become a nurse.
26. What can we learn about Mary Breckinridge from the text
A. She trained the nurses herself.
B. She wanted to set up more clinics to help the sick.
C. She wiped out all diseases in the Kentucky mountains.
D. She made a great impact on health care today.
27. What is the main idea of the text
A. Mary and her family were always helpful to others.
B. The Frontier Nursing Service set up many branches.
C. Rural nurses found creative ways to transport supplies and patients.
D. Mary and other nurses provided kind medical care to rural people.

The human brain remembers negative experiences more easily than positive ones. Our brains have developed in this way because threats, like dangerous animals, have a more immediate effect on people’s survival compared to positive things like food or shelter. As a result, you clearly know what makes you unhappy, but do you know what makes you happy
Research suggests that our level of happiness is partly shaped by the choices we make. If you’ve been chasing wealth, fame, power and some material things, you may be looking for happiness in the wrong places. Psychologists suggest that the following habits can make people happier.
People who own close relationships tend to be happier than those who do not. The number of our friends is not important. What matters is the quality of our relationships. Relationships that bring happiness usually consist of the sharing of feelings, acceptance, mutual (互相的) respect and trust.
People who exercise regularly can improve both their physical and mental well-being. Some research has shown that exercise can be as effective as some medicine in treating depression.
If we are so interested in an activity, we may lose track of time, and we can be in a state of flow. The activity could be playing the piano, surfing the Internet or playing a game... People who experience flow in their work or life tend to be happier.
People are more likely to be happy if they know what their strengths are and can use them regularly. People are especially happy when they can set goals and use their strengths to achieve them.
People, who think positively by being grateful, mindful and optimistic, are more likely to be happy. Being grateful means being thankful. Being mindful means considering, focusing on, and enjoying the experiences of the present moment. Being optimistic means being hopeful about the future.
28. Why do human brains remember negative things more easily
A. Because negative things are easy to remember.
B. Because negative things can make people live much happier.
C. Because negative things are much more important than other things.
D. Because negative things tend to affect human survival immediately.
29. According to this passage, in which of the following can people not find happiness
A. Chasing power. B. Doing sports. C. Playing the violin. D. Making friends.
30. In the last paragraph, what does the author try to tell us
A. We should think more about our future. B. We should be positive in our life and work.
C. We should focus on everything in our life. D. We should only enjoy the present moment.
31. What does the passage mainly want to tell us
A. Some habits that make people happy.
B. The habits people form in their life.
C. Why people remember positive things easily.
D. Why people remember negative things easily.
D
Language lets us share our feelings, make connections, and even hand down family traditions like recipes and songs from generation to generation. But what about family members who don’t speak the same language
A “mother language” is defined as the first language that a child learns at home. So you’d think that means your mother language is by default your strongest, most comfortable language, right Wrong. While you might think learning a language is like riding a bicycle, something you never forget how to do, it’s easy to lose language fluency without practice.
Studies show that people who learn a heritage language (that is, one connected to their family history, whether they grew up speaking it or not) experience improved self-esteem(自尊) and safety in their identities (身份). Researchers also mention that reconnecting with and understanding the family history and community is the driving force behind heritage language learning.
Relearning a mother language or trying out a heritage language as a beginner might feel overwhelming at first, but the results can be incredibly rewarding. Jenny Liao’s article, Forgetting My First Language, details how her Cantonese slowly became rusty (荒疏的) after years of living away from home. Eventually, weekly phone calls with her parents only became possible through translation apps. The inability to communicate fluently had made their relationship shallow. Resolving to close these gaps, Liao threw herself into practicing Cantonese. She forced herself into uncomfortable Cantonese conversations whenever possible in stores and restaurants. Before long, she found she could have deeper conversations with her parents. Their relationship grew closer, even though her Cantonese only improved moderately. It’s a demonstration of the impressive power of language to bring families together.
Learning or relearning a heritage language can sound pretty intimidating at first. But the hard work invested proves to be rewarding and worthwhile. What could be a stronger personal connection than the connection with family heritage
32. What is the author’s attitude to the thought “mother language is the strongest”
A. Uncaring. B. Supportive. C. Concerned. D. Opposite.
33. What is the advantage of learning a heritage language according to studies
A. Improved job skills.
B. Heightened sense of belonging.
C. Sharpened communication skills.
D. Broadened understanding of different opinions.
34. How is paragraph 4 developed
A. By analyzing the cause. B. By offering an example.
C. By making a comparison. D. By explaining the data.
35. Which can replace the underlined word “intimidating” in the last paragraph
A. Confusing. B. Surprising. C. Frightening. D. Relaxing.

Choosing the Right School Club for You
High school is a time to explore interests, make friends, and develop new skills. Joining a school club is one of the best ways to do this. 36 However, it can be hard to decide which one fits you best. Here are some practical tips to help you make the right choice.
37 What activities make you lose track of time Do you enjoy painting, playing music, or writing Are you interested in science experiments or helping the community Your true interests will make club activities more enjoyable and meaningful. For example, if you love nature, the Environmental Club might be a great fit.
Consider your time and schedule. It’s important to consider how long you can spend on club activities. Some clubs require weekly meetings, while others have events on weekends or after school. If you have a busy schedule with homework and part-time jobs, choose a club that doesn’t take up too much time. 38
Don’t be afraid to try something new. Joining a club that you’re curious about can be a great adventure. You might discover a hidden talent or a new interest that you never knew you had. 39 Most of them end up loving the experience. For example, a quiet student might find joy in the Drama Club by performing on stage.
Trust your feelings. After considering all these factors (因素), go with the club that makes you feel excited. A club that matches your interests will keep you motivated (有动机的) to take part. 40 If a club doesn’t feel right for you, it’s okay to try another one.
A. Ask for advice from others around you.
B. Think about your hobbies and interests.
C. There are different clubs for you to choose from.
D. It’s not a good idea to join too many clubs at once.
E. Many students join clubs outside their comfort zones.

This is an announcement from the headmaster’s office. This is an earthquake safety exercise. I repeat, this is an earthquake safety exercise. Students, please take cover under your desks and use your arms to protect your head. Do not move until your teachers tell you to. Teachers make sure all classroom doors are not locked and nothing is blocking the doors. You’ll need to make sure that all students are paying attention and doing everything correctly, like we’ve been practicing. Teachers, please try to keep your students as calm as possible. You can use the yellow radios in your desks to communicate with me and other teachers if necessary. No one is allowed to leave the classrooms for any reason until the alarm has stopped. Once you hear that the bell has stopped, line up quickly and walk outside to the playground. Make sure that you stay with your class at all times. Once we are all outside, I will make another announcement and we can then return to our normal activities.
