Decades before “scrambling (徒手攀登)” became a trendy term for adventurous hiking, Alan Kane had been exploring Canada’s Rocky Mountains. Since the 1970s, he has completed over 1,000 ascents (攀登), pioneering a style of climbing that bridges hiking and technical rock climbing. Now in its fourth edition, Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies remains the definite guide for climbers seeking to test their skills on the region’s challenging yet accessible landscape.
Scrambling, as Kane defines it, involves routes with short climbing sections (below or barely reaching fifth-class difficulty) that don’t require ropes or advanced equipment. However, these climbs demand physical fitness, caution, and an awareness of mountain dangers like loose rocks. Kane developed this approach out of necessity: limited by injuries from skydiving and heavy backpacking, he began seeking routes accessible by road that avoided technical facilities or camping.
Early in his career, Kane joined the Alpine Club of Canada and began tackling 11,000-foot peaks. Depressed by the lack of detailed records for scrambling routes, he spent years researching historical journals and guidebooks. His efforts culminated in the 1991 release of Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies, which quickly became essential for climbers. Thirty-three years later, the updated fourth edition introduces 19 new routes, including ascents of Mount Temple, Chancellor Peak, and Mount Robertson — some of the guidebook’s most difficult climbs. Kane warns that routes labeled “climber’s scrambles” may approach fifth-class difficulty, urging readers to study his difficulty ratings carefully.
For beginners, Kane offers two key tips: master the equipment and danger guidelines in his book, and always climb with experienced partners or clubs. He emphasizes that online platforms and websites lack the reliability of his guide, noting that many digital resources contain dangerous inaccuracies or unclear advice.
Kane’s work stands as a proof of decades of dedication. Whether you’re a seasoned climber or new to the Rockies, his guide is an invaluable tool — and, at $40, one of the best investments for your next adventure.
24.Why did Alan Kane turn to scramble
A.He lacked interest in technical rock climbing.
B.He wanted to join the Alpine Club of Canada.
C.He suffered physical limitations due to injuries.
D.He aimed to explore completely unmapped areas.
25.What can be inferred about the fourth edition of Kane’s guidebook
A.It includes more challenging routes than earlier versions.
B.It is less expensive than other climbing guidebooks online.
C.It has removed some outdated routes from previous editions.
D.It was based on his extensive research into historical records.
26.What does the underlined word “culminated” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Began suddenly. B.Ended successfully. C.Continued gradually. D.Failed completely.
27.What does Kane think of online climbing resources
A.They serve as good supplements to printed guidebooks.
B.They attract far more beginners than traditional clubs.
C.They offer climbers timely and convenient updates.
D.They are less reliable than his printed guidebook.

David Brooks is a best-selling author. The book club I joined recently picked his work How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen. Brooks opens the book with a personal reflection: “By high school, I had built a long-term shelter inside my own mind.” Yet after marriage and the arrival of his children, he came to realize that inner change was badly needed. He recalls, “When I was younger, my goal was to become knowledgeable. As I grew older, I longed to gain wisdom. Wise individuals combine factual knowledge with compassionate insight into other human beings.”
Brooks argues that the quality of individual lives, as well as social well-being, depends heavily on how we treat one another during small, day-to-day exchanges. He observes two types of people in society: “diminishers” and “illuminators”. To illustrate what makes an illuminator, Brooks cites E.M. Forster’s biographer: “To speak to him was to feel heard with such intensity that you were driven toward your most sincere, sharp-sighted and finest self.”
Brooks further notes that frequent readers tend to grow more empathetic, a vital quality for healthy relationships. Reading enables audiences to witness characters’ struggles, broadening their awareness of diverse viewpoints and inner feelings. He borrows a line from Thornton Wilder: “In love’s service, only the wounded soldiers can serve.” It is through hardship and tough life events, Brooks implies, that human beings gradually achieve greater emotional wisdom.
Brooks proves himself a skilled story-teller and draws widely from research findings. Still, the reviewer finds the book occasionally disjointed. Some extended anecdotes (趣闻) fail to closely support the arguments laid out in earlier chapters. Though Brooks is well-informed, certain sections read like a journalist’s collection of quotations from diverse materials.
Even so, the reviewer appreciates Brooks’s frankness. He openly admits where his own understanding falls short, and shows genuine passion for the topic. All things considered, this volume can serve as a worthwhile reference for readers.
28.What do we know about Brooks from paragraph 1
A.His life course is redirected.
B.The book club makes his book a hit.
C.His book focuses on personal reflection.
D.Parenthood shifts his perspective on life.
29.According to Brooks, an illuminator tends to ________.
A.prioritize others’ opinions
B.demand total honesty from others
C.empathize with people and better them
D.stay away from people and avoid conflicts
30.How can readers build their empathy through reading
A.By sharing different opinions. B.By sensing others’ inner worlds.
C.By recording life experiences. D.By curing emotional wounds.
31.What does the author want to convey in paragraph 4
A.The characters in the book are vividly described.
B.The language of the text is informal and original.
C.Some contents of the book are loosely connected.
D.The central theme of the book is clearly presented.
D
New research suggests people may not always want help in sticking to their New Year’s resolutions, challenging the common view of a “planner-doer” conflict in behavioral science.
A team from UK and German universities surveyed 240 adults to explore how people identify with their “planner” (self-control-focused) and “doer” (desire-driven) selves. Published in Behavioral Public Policy, the study found that while participants differed in the relative importance they attached to desire and self-control, overall, attitudes in favour of desire were almost as common as attitudes in favour of self-control.
Public policies designed to “push” people towards healthy lifestyles are often based on the grounds that people think of their planners as their true selves and dislike the actions of their doers. However, in their study published today in the journal Behavioral Public Policy, the authors argue this assumption overlooks the possibility that people value desire as well as self-control and approve of their own flexible attitudes to resolutions.
Robert Sugden, a professor of economics at UEA, said, “Our key message is not about whether pushes towards healthy lifestyles are good for people’s long-term health or happiness. It is about whether such pushes can be based on the grounds that they help individuals to overcome what they themselves acknowledge as self-control problems.” For example, respondents favored desire for sugary drinks or desserts yet prioritized self-control for exercise — viewing small indulgences (放纵) as positive expressions of desire.
In the online survey, participants recalled either a joyful meal or a satisfying health effort, then expressed their opinions about self-control and desire. Surprisingly, the differences in recalled episode didn’t significantly affect their attitudes. Most agreed both long-term planning and occasional small joys were important.
The study concludes identifying when people want help with self-control is more complex than thought, emphasizing that desires deserve equal attention. Breaking a health-oriented resolution by ordering a dessert is perhaps a more positive way than not taking one’s daily run on a wet day.
32.What does the “planner-doer” conflict refer to
A.The difference between formal and informal help.
B.The conflict between individual and public interests.
C.The contrast between past experiences and future plans.
D.The gap between long-term goals and short-term desires.
33.Why do public policies “push” people toward healthy lifestyles
A.To promote desire in daily life.
B.To reduce social pressure on individuals.
C.To help people overcome self-control problems.
D.To balance short-term joys and long-term health
34.What did the study find about desire
A.It is valued almost as much as self-control.
B.It is strongly influenced by past experiences.
C.It is less important than self-control for health.
D.It is mainly expressed through skipping exercise.
35.What can we infer from the text
A.All people regret breaking their New Year’s resolutions.
B.Small indulgences are seen as harmful by most participants.
C.The “push” policies may not agree with people’s actual needs.
D.Past happy meals make people less likely to value self-control.

Football has been my greatest passion since I was a little child. I have always been crazy about football matches. Whenever I watched players rushing across the green field, passing the ball skillfully and scoring wonderful goals, my heart was filled with great excitement and endless hope. However, I was born weak. I was much thinner and far less athletic than my peers.
For years, my poor physical condition cast a shadow over me. I became shy and totally lacked self-confidence. I always stayed quiet and dared not show myself in front of others. Deep in my heart, I loved football more than anything else, but I never had the courage to join any official football training. I was constantly troubled by worries. I feared that my weak body would drag my team down and make me a laughing stock in front of everyone.
Luckily, a precious opportunity came to me by chance. A member of our school football team had to leave for a short time, and I was unexpectedly picked to fill his position. Knowing this chance was hard-earned, I cherished it deeply. From then on, I devoted myself to strict daily training. No matter how tired or hot it was, I never complained or gave up. I kept practicing basic skills over and over again — improving my speed, stabilizing my passes and strengthening my defense. Day after day, my body became stronger and my football skills improved steadily. My sincere efforts and persistent practice were finally noticed and praised by my warm coach and helpful teammates. Despite all the progress I had made, I was still just a substitute. I could only sit on the bench and watch my teammates compete on the field, with no chance to take part in any official match.
The long-awaited important inter-school football match finally arrived. The competition was extremely fierce right from the start. Both teams fought hard with all their strength, trying to take the lead and win the game. The audience cheered loudly from the stands, making the atmosphere even more tense. As the game went on, the score remained tied, and the situation grew increasingly critical. Just at that moment, an accident happened to our team. Our starting player twisted his ankle badly in a fierce collision. He could barely stand due to the sharp pain and had to leave the field immediately.

Stand Up and Exercise, Everybody
Most of us keep sitting all through breaks, which makes our bodies stiff and minds tired. Here I strongly recommend stretching as an ideal sport for breaks.
It is easy to learn and needs no special equipment. We can do it right in our classrooms in a short time. Stretching helps relax tight muscles, improve blood circulation and reduce study pressure.
