Last week, I emerged from the Tube in central London for a day that would once have been unthinkable. First, I bought a morning coffee. Then I went out for a box of sushi. A few hours later, I dropped into a mini-supermarket to buy some tea bags. Each time, I had zero contact with a human. Instead, I ordered and paid for everything using one of the touchscreens that now pepper our life.
Looking back, I find it hard to remember the last time I bought anything entirely from a person. The business logic is obvious: screens reduce staff costs, shorten waiting lines, and encourage more purchases through appealing food photos and non-judgmental ordering.
I believe that customers often prefer the ease and speed of touchscreens and that not all human interactions are enjoyable. Yet, I still prefer a world with more time-consuming people than machines. It’s not just because machines often fail, but because finding a human can be exciting. That’s why I was surprised during a recent trip to Brazil, where I found so many staff in a local supermarket — at checkouts, in aisles, upstairs — that I took photos to show people back home. Two men even helped me decide which umbrella suited me best.
That novel experience heartened me so much that I wasn’t surprised to learn some European retailers (零售商) are boosting such human interaction. The Dutch chain Jumbo introduced a slower “chat checkout” for customers to talk with cashiers and expanded it to about 200 stores, especially in places where loneliness was a big problem.
Earlier this year, an expert noted software engineers felt lonely when they turned to AI instead of their co-workers. I find this easy to imagine. Technology can lead us down many paths, but that does not mean all should be taken.
24. What is a feature of the author’s shopping habit in London
A. Interacting with store staff. B. Placing orders on the phone.
C. Using self-service machines. D. Avoiding mini-supermarkets.
25. Which word best describes the author’s shopping experience in Brazil
A. Pleasing. B. Annoying. C. Disappointing. D. Amusing.
26. Why did Jumbo introduce “chat checkout”
A. To expand its business B. To simplify the checkout process.
C. To help its employees fight loneliness. D. To encourage interpersonal communication.
27. What message does the author deliver in the text
A. The best is yet to come. B. Convenience comes at a cost.
C. All roads lead to Rome. D. Every cloud has a silver lining.

About 300 participants from around the world spent the past year developing peptide candidates (候选肽) for obesity, diabetes, and other diseases, putting computational strategies to the test in the lab. Organized by the Beijing Frontier Research Center for Biological Structure (FRCBS) of Tsinghua University, the Peptide Design Competition is less a showcase than a benchmarking exercise — an attempt to see how well AI-driven designs hold up under experimental examination.
“Our ultimate goal is to discover next-generation peptide drugs,” said Jianzhu Ma, a professor of Tsinghua University’s department of electronic engineering and Institute for AI Industry Research. “We started this international competition to employ advances in structural biology and AI, focusing on developing safer and more effective therapies for metabolic diseases.” The initiative reflects a broader shift in drug discovery.
This year’s target is NK2R, a receptor involved in regulating energy metabolism and appetite. NK2R agonist peptides adjust receptor signaling without functioning as hormone replacements. Ma notes that peptides occupy an intermediate space between small molecules and antibodies: high specificity with often lower immune response than larger biologics.
Round 1 uses structural data for NK2R as input for AI-driven design platforms to generate peptide sequences predicted to bind and activate the receptor. Submissions are evaluated computationally, then synthesized and tested experimentally for measurable activity. In round 2, improved on the results of round 1, candidates are tested for selectivity between family proteins.
“I was most surprised by how clearly the competition validated the predictive power of the screening approach,” says Yu Yiping of ByteDance AI Drug Discovery. “It motivated me to develop AI-driven peptide design and peptide therapies for traditionally undruggable diseases.”
Organizers hope to expand participation in the future. Framing peptide design as a shared international exercise offers a model for collaboratively evaluating and improving computational drug discovery.
28. How does the author introduce the topic
A. By testifying a method. B. By describing candidate peptides
C. By outlining an activity. D. By displaying AI-guided designs.
29. What is the competition procedure
A. Input data → judge submissions → upgrade data → retest for selectivity.
B. Produce data → compute data → assess data → upgrade data.
C. Input data → test for selectivity → upgrade data → retest for activity.
D. Forecast outcomes → conduct lab trials → activate peptides → hand in results.
30. What does the underlined word “validated” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean
A. Denied. B. Limited. C. Proved. D. Cancelled.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Peptide Design Challenge B. Goodbye, Undruggable Diseases
C. A Wide-ranging Shift, a Fresh Finding D. Combined Work, a Common Outlook
D
When advertising leaders call themselves “cockroaches”, it is no self-criticism. It means that they have an extraordinary ability to survive great changes. Copywriters adjusted to radio in the 1920s; artists accepted TV in the 1950s; agencies survived the 2000s shift to online ads. Facing artificial intelligence (AI) — the most serious change — they gathered confidently at their annual Cannes meeting. As one of the fields most greatly influenced by AI, advertising offers a preview of how the technology will reshape other industries.
The gap between human ad workers and AI chatbots is narrower than imagined. Creative work was once thought safe from automation — large language models (LLMs) value predictability more than creativity. Yet while truly creative ads like attaching step-counters to chickens to promote free-range eggs are still made by humans, leading technology companies now offer AI tools that produce acceptable videos or rewrite ad copy. However, with large amounts of money spent on ads yearly, most goes to common campaigns. The claim that AI will handle 95% of marketing work and that humans may only keep the 5% most creative tasks is more a warning than an exaggeration.
Big companies gain most from AI, which goes against the idea that AI will make skills and intelligence available to all. Small businesses benefit — they can now make TV-quality ads for thousands instead of millions — but some big tech firms control half the global ad market. AI needs expensive computing power and large data sets, resources only the rich can get. Unlike human intelligence, which is widely spread, AI can be bought. Instead of making the competition fair, AI lets the wealthy keep competitive advantages.
AI’s effects are hard to predict. Advertisers are moving budgets from TV to simple outdoor billboards — AI now uses big data to prove if people who saw the billboard bought the product, turning guesses into clear results. Traditional public relations is another unexpected winner: As consumers use chatbots more, brands must make LLMs speak well of them. The best way is to influence the news sources LLMs depend on. In the AI age, offline communication may work better than high-tech “search-engine optimization”. Though advertising has special survival skills, its AI experience shows what’s coming for all businesses.
32. What does the example of the “step-counter chicken campaign” mainly show
A. The wide use of creative marketing strategies.
B. The rapid development of AI advertising tools.
C. AI’s inability to finish common advertising tasks
D. Humans’ unique advantage in creative advertising.
33. It can be inferred from the third paragraph that .
A. AI has only drawbacks for small businesses
B. Human intelligence is harder to obtain than AI
C. Wealth size decides firms’ access to AI technology
D. AI narrows the gap between big and small businesses
34. What mainly leads to the growing popularity of outdoor billboards
A. Their stronger visual attraction than TV ads.
B. AI’s ability to measure their effects accurately.
C. Their lower cost than high-tech online campaigns.
D. Consumers’ growing preference for offline advertising.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. AI: A Threat to Advertising Leaders.
B. AI and Advertising: Changes and Lessons.
C. “Cockroaches” in AI Ads: A Way to Survive.
D. Big Companies: Winners of AI Revolution.

The experience of coming to university is just as important for you as the degree you earn when you graduate. 36 One option you might be interested in is vlogging(制作视频博客).
A vlog is basically a written blog presented in video format. Think of it as your own TV show, typically featuring you as the main star. 37 They can be posted publicly or kept private.
There are plenty of reasons to start a vlog at university, but it’s mainly about finding a format that benefits you and enriches your journey. Don’t focus too much on what other vloggers are doing. 38
Documenting your journey through university can be helpful. Firstly, it will show others what kind of difficulties they may face before even starting their journey. 39 Since all of your family and friends will have the opportunity to see you at the same time, you can keep them all informed at one go.
40 It can help fight the fear of public speaking. The more videos you make, the more confident you become. Eventually, public speaking will become easier for you, opening up new opportunities for you in your university and working life. On top of this, the more videos you create, the more you may need to edit them. This could include trimming clips (剪辑片断), adding sound effects and possibly some text as well. It may seem frightening, but you will develop a new skill in time that may benefit you in the future.
A. Videos can be as short or as long as you like.
B. Instead, find a style that suits you and stick to it.
C. Vlogging can also help your growth as a professional.
D. In addition, it will be a good diary for you to rewatch later on.
E. The equipment you need will depend on the type of vlog you want to create.
F. It’s a period of personal growth, and documenting it can bring many benefits.
G. Moreover, it will show your family and friends what it’s like living away from home.

The summer night was serene (宁静), with crickets singing and a gentle breeze rustling the trees around us. We had found the perfect camping spot, deep in the woods, far from the distractions of daily life. No Wi-Fi, no schedules-just our family, together. This was what camping was all about-unplugging, connecting, and making memories.
As the fire burned down, we crawled into our tent, the kids falling asleep almost instantly. Everything was perfect.
Until it wasn’t.
In the middle of the night, I woke with a start(突然一惊), my heart pounding. Something was outside our tent. The sound was faint but persistent-soft footsteps, a shuffle here and there, followed by a pause.
I nudged my husband awake. Sighing, Dan reached for the flashlight and unzipped the tent.“Oh,” he said softly. “It’s just a dog.” I scrambled out of the tent to take a look. A tan, short-haired dog stood at the edge of our campsite, pacing back and forth. His fur was dirty, and he looked underfed(营养不良的).
“Poor thing,” I whispered. “He must be hungry.” Dan grabbed some leftover hot dogs, offering one to the dog. To our surprise, the dog backed away, his eyes darting nervously toward the trees.
By now, the kids had woken up, and Tommy was beside himself with excitement. “A doggy!” he shouted, much too loud for the quiet night.
“Shh,” I warned. “We don’t want to scare him.”
Sarah, our daughter, ever observant, tilted her head and said, “Something’s wrong, Mom. Look, how scared he is.”
She was right. The dog seemed torn between staying and fleeing, pacing anxiously, his tail tucked. Then we heard it-a heavy rustling coming from the trees behind us. The dog froze, his head snapping toward the sound, and a low growl rumbled from his throat(喉咙里发出低沉的咆哮声). His hair rose as he positioned himself between us and the forest.

My Voice about the School Sports Festival
When it comes to the school sports festival, some argue that the sports competitions matter most. But for me, the opening ceremony deserves our greatest attention.
Last year, our class spent two weeks preparing for the parade. We designed our own banner, practiced our formation, and even choreographed a short dance. When we finally marched onto the field, wearing matching colors and shouting our class slogan, I felt a surge of pride I had never experienced before. The whole school stood together, cheering, applauding, and celebrating as one community.
The opening ceremony is not just a formality. It sets the tone for the entire festival, reminding us that sports are not only about winning or losing, but about unity, creativity, and school spirit. Without that powerful start, the events would feel like ordinary PE classes.
My Voice about the School Sports Festival
As for the school sports festival, I tend to focus on the sports competitions rather than the opening ceremony.
Admittedly, the opening ceremony is lively and impressive. However, competitions bring me more real feelings. I once joined the relay race with my classmates. We encouraged each other and fought hard till the end, from which we learned sports are not just about winning or losing, but about participation, friendship, and self-improvement. Meanwhile, watching other players run also filled me with passion and fueled my excitement. The atmosphere on the playground was electric, with everyone immersed in the pure joy of competition.
The opening ceremony is only the prelude, but sports competitions are the heart of the sports festival. In my eyes, the real story unfolds on the track and the field.
读后续写 参考范文(满分25分)
Time slowed as a large bear emerged from the darkness. Its eyes glinted in the light, and it raised its head, sniffing the air. The air felt heavy with tension. The kids huddled close behind me, their faces pale with fear. The dog barked sharply, and the bear turned its attention to our camp. “Car,” I whispered urgently, “Everyone to the car. Now.” We moved as one—Dan scooping up Tommy, me grabbing Sarah's hand—as the bear moved closer. The dog stayed between us and the bear, growling low but never attacking, as if buying us time. My hands trembled as I fumbled for the car keys, finally unlocking the doors with a chirp. We scrambled into the car, the dog leaping in just as Dan slammed the door. From the safety of the SUV, we watched in horror as the bear tore through our campsite, ripping our tent apart like it was paper, devouring anything remotely edible.
We sat with the dog in the car, watching the bear leave. The bear finally finished and wandered back into the woods. The campsite was unrecognizable, with the tent shredded and the cooler overturned. The dog, now quiet, sat proudly on Tommy's lap, his eyes still fixed on the trees. “He saved us,” Sarah whispered, stroking his dirty fur. Tommy nodded, hugging the dog tightly. “We should keep him,” he said, his voice full of determination. Dan and I exchanged a look and smiled. “I think he's already decided to stay,” I said softly. As the sun began to rise, casting a warm glow over the ruined campsite, we knew one thing for sure—our family had grown by one brave and loyal member.

M: Right, but didn't you say it's risky to install on your main computer
W: Exactly! That's why I bought a second-hand computer just for testing. It was cheap, so if anything goes wrong, my important files will still be safe.
M: Yeah, it's smart to run OpenClaw on a separate machine. I thought about trying it too, but honestly, I'm waiting for QClaw.
W: That makes sense. QClaw definitely seems safer, since it has real security teams behind it. But I'm just too curious to wait. I want to see how this technology might change my daily work.
M: So how's the experiment going so far
W: Pretty interesting. It's already helping me organize emails and schedule meetings.

W: Hello everyone! Welcome to Global Flavors. Today, we're talking about coffee. It likely began in Africa and was grown in Yemen by the 6th century. Traders brought it to Europe, but people were unsure of it at first, and it gradually won acceptance. Coffee quickly spread across the continent after that. By the 1600s, coffeehouses opened in London, Paris, and Vienna. After the 1773 Boston Tea Party, Americans switched to coffee. Coffee only grows in hot areas near the equator. The red cherries are processed in two ways. In the dry method, they're dried whole in the sun. In the wet method, workers first remove the soft part around the beans, then leave them in water before washing and drying them. This results in better quality coffee. Roasting usually happens in importing countries to bring out flavor. Most coffee comes from two types of coffee plant. Arabica grows high up and tastes rich. Robusta grows lower, has more of the stimulating substance, and is used in cheaper coffee and instant coffee. The best instant coffee is freeze-dried and cheaper ones are spray-dried.
