Most of us have secret gardens where we can relax, stretch and refresh. For me, since I can remember, that world has been books.
As with many children, books first drew me in through their illustrations. My love of colour was stimulated by the original Babar books; my understanding of lines comes from the Our Wullie annuals, or Tintin. Later, the words became more important to me. I was not happy at boarding school, but I loved spending time in its library. Books became my private garden. So it was no surprise that I studied English at university.
Today “English literature” is in sharp decline among senior-level exam subjects and some universities are ceasing to offer it. This is a quiet cultural disaster, one in which we are stealing their best future from our children. It may not lead directly to a good-paying office job. But it has given people like me a reliable friend.
Later, work and family made it harder for me to read. As a journalist, I had many deadlines, and as a mother, I often had little time because of children and money worries. Sometimes I read while standing on a moving bus or train. It was difficult, but I kept reading. Every year, I still looked forward to new books by Ian McEwan and many other writers, such as Penelope Fitzgerald and Donna Tartt. Each book gave me a new world to explore and a new friend to meet.
At this point, readers may ask whether I would have been better off living — meeting and talking to fleshy actual humans or playing sports. Well, I don’t spend all my life on a sofa with books all around me. There seems to be time for chat and laughter. But without deep and repeated reading of writers who millions of other people have already found friendly and helpful, my life would just be so much narrower and meaner. The great books remain, across most of a lifetime, my secret garden.

D. Her insistence on reading.
27. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph
A. Analyze a current trend. B. Defend her point of view.
C. Show readers’ misunderstanding of books. D. Prove the importance of real-life activities.

Want to lose fat There’s one method scientifically proven to work: eating a little less food than your body needs to fuel itself each day. Do that, and your body starts using its energy reserves — its stored fat — to make up the deficit.
It sounds straightforward. You dutifully keep track of the calories in every meal to make sure your daily intake stays less than your fixed limit, but the number on your weight scale never changes at all. It’s frustrating and disheartening. But there’s good news: you’re not to blame.
Recent scientific findings suggest it’s almost impossible to count calories with any degree of accuracy, which explains why trying to lose weight by calorie counting is so hard. It’s not bad maths that trips most of us up, though. Generally, unless you diligently log every ingredient before you eat, humans just aren’t very good at recalling exactly what was on their plate, let alone the handful of snacks they ate without thinking. Given all that, it’s no surprise that studies suggest the average person underestimates their daily consumption by around 30 per cent (roughly 600-750 calories), or about 10 digestive biscuits.
The very idea of working out calorie amounts is problematic. And that’s before we even consider the effect your individual biology can have. For instance, a 2023 study tested the outcomes of giving people a high-fibre diet, designed to feed their gut microbes (肠道菌群). With growing microbial communities in their guts, the scientists found that the participants in the study lost a little bit of weight — without eating less or feeling hungry — because they were absorbing fewer calories from their food.
“That means, depending on what you eat and how many microbes are thriving (旺盛繁殖) in your gut, some calories are used by you, while others feed the microbes.” says Professor Rosa Brown, a co-author of the study.
If all this is starting to make you think that calorie monitoring might be off the menu, you’d be right.
28. What does the underlined word “deficit” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Database. B. Shortfall. C. Nutrition. D. Weight.
29. What makes it hard for dieters to count calories
A. Inaccuracy of intake records. B. Lack of tracking approaches.
C. Absence of scientific evidence. D. Complexity of calculation procedures.
30. What can we learn from the 2023 study
A. Calorie absorption may vary. B. Eating less means losing weight.
C. Fibre reduces people’s hunger. D. Food calories determine body weight.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Forget the Strict Diet B. Simplify Your Calorie Log
C. Skip the Dietary Math D. Adjust Your Diet Structure
D
Food markets have experienced considerable instability in recent years. Global warming is causing droughts, soil desertification and extreme weather. Yet the fundamentals of food production were last transformed in the mid-20th century. Fortunately, global investments in agricultural innovation are on the rise. Funds for agritech companies reached $16.2 billion in 2025. Of this, $9 billion went to new research into boosting farm yields, up from $2.5 billion in 2016. The focus of sustainability efforts is switching from preventing climate change to dealing with it and finding solutions.
Scientists are developing alternatives to the pesticides and fertilisers that have dominated modern agriculture since the Green Revolution of the mid-20th century, based on a better understanding of plants themselves. B-COS, a team from Ghent University, is genetically engineering bacteria to produce a special kind of molecule (分子). Tomato and potato plants sprayed (喷洒) with the molecules are tricked into believing they are under attack and activate their natural defenses against infection. B-COS is applying this approach to two new products: one to improve growth and drought tolerance, and another which it claims can reduce disease incidence by 40-50%.
Naturally, there are also companies exploring the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence. The general idea of this combination is called “precision agriculture”, which is to help farmers connect everything from the environmental conditions of individual fields to the genetic sequences (序列) of the bacteria present in the soil, and those of the plants themselves. This is then run through AI models that make predictions about the best conditions and treatments to achieve the highest yields or produce the highest-quality crops.
“It is going to show us what’s going on in each square metre of the fields, such as temperature, water and carbon absorption,” says Mr. Anders, a managing partner of an agritech company.
There is still a long way to go. In 2024, agricultural tech companies attracted just 1.3% of global early-stage venture-capital funding despite agriculture accounting for about 4% of global GDP. But if high-tech innovations still make their way, and the funds keep flowing, a new age of precision agriculture is coming.
32. What is highlighted concerning agricultural investment in paragraph 1
A. Its instability. B. Its source. C. Its influence. D. Its shift.
33. Why did the B-COS team spray the molecules on tomato and potato plants
A. To evaluate disease tolerance. B. To eliminate harmful substances.
C. To boost natural resistance. D. To protect healthy plants.
34. What does “precision agriculture” contribute to
A. Accurate market forecasting. B. Efficient harvesting techniques.
C. Sufficient genetic information. D. Reasonable agricultural planning.
35. What is the author’s purpose in presenting the data in the last paragraph
A. To call for greater investment. B. To warn of potential risks.
C. To cast light on the achievements. D. To give credit to the companies.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
The work is piling up, pressure is mounting, and deadlines are approaching. How can we still get useful results if we need to make quick judgments and fast decisions 36 Here’s how we can upgrade our minds.
Firstly, challenge your key assumptions. Based on past experience, our mind constantly makes assumptions about the world. However, what saves us time and energy can lead to wrong conclusions if they remain unchallenged. Start by working in a team and questioning each other’s assumptions. 37
You should also consider alternative explanations. Humans seek explanations, and we prefer the one that comes to mind first. 38 It pays to naturally look beyond the most obvious explanations. This is to avoid confirmation bias; when we ignore evidence that goes against a prior belief. A master thinker treats their preferred explanation just as an assumption.
39 They simply refer to the main factors influencing how things have been going or how they will go. If we practice watching for driving factors when we have time to think, we’ll be able to identify them more instinctively on occasions when we’re in a hurry. The master thinker prioritizes the factors that impact an issue the most.
Finally, consider the overall context. The master thinker considers the circumstances and conditions of an issue. 40 A few minutes to orient ourselves and reflect on the situation as a whole can once more save us time down the road. Only then is it time to consider the details and incorporate them back into said picture.
A. Moreover, try to focus on key drivers.
B. Attempt to think about problems wisely.
C. However, that isn’t necessarily the correct one.
D. This habit involves looking at the big picture first.
E. True expert thinkers know the limitations of their minds.
F. This collaborative approach enables your thinking to be challenged.
G. Actually, the habits of master thinkers can help in reasoning and making decisions.

In our cozy little house nestled at the end of a quiet street, my sister Oscar and I were bustling (忙碌的) about, filled with anticipation for Mother’s Day. Our mother Clare was the heart of our family. She was the type of mom who always put our needs first, sacrificing her own desires for our happiness.
Growing up, we established a beautiful tradition that each year, we would surprise her with a special gift to show our gratitude and love. This year, Oscar came up with a brilliant idea: “What if we made her a long and beautiful dress ” she exclaimed, her voice filled with excitement. As I recalled, since the day we were born, Mom hadn’t bought herself a beautiful new dress, so I knew we had to make this year’s surprise truly special.
With that thought in mind, we set to work. I grabbed my drawing book and began to design, my pencil dancing across the page; while Oscar with her perfect sense of measurement and love for sewing. she got down to handling the cloth. Her eyes shone with concentration, while I focused on the beautiful patterns on the dress. Soon, the dress began to take shape — it was such a magnificent long dress, and we carefully wrapped it in gift paper.
But then came the question: where to hide it for the surprise to be revealed at dinner We put our heads together, brainstorming the perfect hiding spot. “Nobody would think to look in my bedroom closet.” I suggested Oscar giggled, nodding in agreement, but we both neglected the fact that our two playful cats could be a problem.
Finally, the moment arrived. After dessert, I exchanged a knowing look with Oscar. It was time to unveil our creation! We dashed to our bedroom together, my heart pounding in my chest as I flung open the closet door.

Dear Jim Smith,
I'm writing to express my heartfelt thanks for your Positive Mindset Workshop last Sunday. It was truly inspiring, and I've learned practical strategies to reframe negative thoughts and build resilience under pressure.
However, I've recently been struggling with anxiety about the upcoming college entrance exam. Despite applying the techniques, I still find myself overwhelmed by self-doubt when facing difficult mock tests. Could you kindly offer some specific advice on maintaining confidence during high-stakes preparation
Thank you again for your guidance.

读后续写范文
“NO” I yelled, seeing our cats dashed out of the closet. To our great disappointment, the dress we made with great efforts was torn and its beautiful cloth was covered with cat fur. Oscar and I stood there, heartbroken and at a loss what to do. Staring at the ruined gift, tears welled up in our eyes. Suddenly, an idea struck me. We cut the damaged dress into a long soft scarf and wrapped it neatly. Then we went back to Mom with the scarf.
“Where did you get such a beautiful scarf ” Mom asked. Hearing this, we told her the whole story about the dress and the naughty cats. Mom’s eyes were filled with tears. She hugged us tightly and said it was the most precious gift she had ever received. Though our plan didn’t go as expected, the love we shared on Mother’s Day was far beyond any perfect dress.

M: And what about people who exercise half as much as that, like me Does that help
W: Of course. Even 15 minutes would help.
