As I’ve grown older, my connection to nature has become stronger. Recently, I was fortunate to spend a good part of a week immersed in the wilderness, following the teachings of my father from my childhood. Ever since I was 10, my sister, father, and I would load up his canoe (独木舟) with supplies and venture into the heart of Algonquin Park.
There were years when I ignored the call of Algonquin, caught up in the busyness of life — graduate school, and raising young children. It all felt overwhelming. But as time passed, my children grew older, and the call of Algonquin grew louder. With the support of my family, I finally heeded that call again, and started planning to take part in one of our family trips there.
My family’s expertise in the outdoors has been invaluable for such trips. My sister, a teacher, carefully plans our trips while my dad, a skilled outdoorsman, effortlessly handles tasks like setting up camp and preparing meals. And my husband is really strong and good at moving things around.
But, as the trip got closer, my husband suddenly hurt his leg. And suddenly, I was faced with managing the first part of the trip as the only adult. Could I drive my daughters, alone, to Algonquin’s remote north boundary to meet my dad and stepmom Could I steer (驾驶) the canoe Could I carry the canoe
I had driven across Canada, alone, in my twenties, well before Google Maps. I was pretty sure I could steer if we kept to smaller lakes that were less likely to become windswept. But I feared carrying a canoe. Plus, lifting it onto my shoulders seemed impossible for someone of my strength.
But Algonquin was calling me. I channeled the fearless independence of my younger self and called Dad. “If we shorten the route and I find a lightweight canoe, the girls and I are coming,” I told him.
With guidance from YouTube and my sister, I mastered the technique of lifting the canoe onto my shoulders and on the day, I unloaded it without a hitch.
The trip was serene. I was reunited with the beauty of Algonquin — the majestic red pines, serene lakes, and the sense of peace that comes with being in the wilderness. This journey felt like a pilgrimage (朝圣), reconnecting me with my adventurous younger self who isn’t extinct, just out of practice.
49. What contributed to my taking part in a family trip again
A. Ignorance of the call of Algonquin. B. Being caught up in the busyness of life.
C. My children getting older and louder. D. Confidence in family and support from them.
50. Which of the following was the author confident of
A. Managing the first part of the trip. B. Steering canoe in small and calm lakes.
C. Carrying the canoe by herself. D. Lifting the canoe onto her shoulders.
51. What kind of person can we learn about the author
A. Independent and humorous. B. Pessimistic and unmotivated.
C. Nature-loving and adventurous. D. Ambitious and self-confident.
52. What message is mainly conveyed in the text
A. It’s never too late for a woman to take a risk.
B. Your family is there for you whatever happens.
C. You should find and stick to what you are good at.
D. Reunion with nature brings back one’s real self.
C
Personality or panic
Recently, a hashtag (话题标签) featuring “Graduates avoid sending resumes (简历) out of social anxiety disorder (社交焦虑障碍)” received many comments on Sina Weibo. It seems that social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia (社交恐惧症), is affecting many people’s lives.
According to a 2023 survey by China Youth Daily, over 64 percent of university students who took part tended to avoid social interaction due to an assumed social phobia. But is avoiding social interactions equal to having a social phobia
For those who have a social phobia, everyday social situations cause strong fear that they feel is beyond their control because they fear being watched or judged negatively by others. Having a social phobia can mean physical symptoms (症状) like blushing (脸红), upset stomach, having trouble catching your breath. The good news is that it is treatable. But if you only feel a bit uncomfortable, that might mean you’re just shy. Avoiding social situations because of shyness might mean missing out on opportunities or being rude.
I used to be so shy that I avoided greeting people I knew by pretending to scroll on (滚动浏览) my phone or turning in another direction.
However, my mindset began to change during my internship (实习期) when I met a senior journalist. When I saw him, I instinctively (本能地) started scrolling on my phone as usual to avoid greeting him. But he immediately saw through it and asked, “Why did you pretend not to see me ” After explaining myself, he replied, “I can relate to feeling awkward, but once someone realizes that you’re avoiding him, it can come across as rude.”
Many shy people avoid socializing because they care too much about what other people think. Being afraid of negative comments, they simply shut themselves down so that no one will have the chance to judge them.
But socializing not only leads to judgment. If you’re lucky enough, you may come across someone like the senior journalist I met who can give you direct but honest feedback. But if some people only offer you negative judgment, simply stay away from them. After all, they’re not making you any better. But never give up eating because of choking (因噎废食). Why give up on opportunities for social interaction because of fears of comments and judgment
53. What is the difference between social phobia and shyness according to the text
A. The willingness to socialize. B. The treatability of the condition.
C. The frequency of social interactions. D. The strength of fear in social situations.
54. What does the author’s personal story intend to show
A. Shyness can change with outside influences.
B. Shyness can lead to feelings of separate.
C. Shyness can be misunderstood as impoliteness.
D. Shyness can be a barrier to career growth.
55. What makes shy people avoid social interactions, according to the text
A. Their preference for being alone.
B. Their too much concern for others’ opinions.
C. Their negative view of conversation topics. D. Their previous negative social experiences.
56. What viewpoint does the author want to express in the last paragraph
A. Positive feedback holds great value. B. Facing negative criticism is a must.
C. It is wise to be selective in socializing. D. Success starts with social connections.
D
When things don’t seem to go right, what’s your first thought Do you just give up or do you make a promise to try a different approach If you give up the effort simply because you’ve run into difficulty, you’re not only giving yourself a reason to call yourself a failure, you’re also depriving (剥夺) yourself of the opportunity to learn.
Nothing in life stays the same. Everything is always in a state of change. Your ability to recognize change and make peace with it, while also finding the flexibility to adapt to changing conditions, will determine how effectively you can continue making progress toward your life goals.
Indeed, when you discover and accept your ability to be flexible, all things are possible. That’s because the realization that there are other ways to go about dealing with what happens in life and to find ways around seemingly impossible difficulties makes you stronger, more self-confident and satisfied. It also greatly improves your perception (感知) of your abilities.
Consider that overcoming difficulties is quite an achievement. When you combine that with the confidence you feel in being able to analyze and put together a workable approach or solution, you wind up with a positive outcome overall. This satisfying result adds to your motivation to solve the next item on your list, to go for another goal that may be a bit more challenging.
This ability to overcome difficulties doesn’t come about automatically, yet it is a talent you can foster. Indeed, it may seem like a losing plan, especially if you don’t see results right away. Instead of losing hope, keep on going.
Have you ever disappointed yourself despite your efforts when you’ve encountered challenges in adapting to changing circumstances Suppose you haven’t been able to figure out a way around them or couldn’t determine a workable approach. Is this a terrible thing Does it mean you’re certain to forever be at the end of the line when it comes to accomplishments It’s not like that. What it does indicate, however, is that you may yet keep some unforgiving thoughts about your own abilities. You may, for example, not trust your instincts (本能) or you might not believe you’re capable enough of taking a calculated risk.
57. We can infer from the first paragraph that .
A. running into difficulty is a valid reason to stop trying
B. it’s a rare thing for people to have a good opportunity
C. facing challenges offers learning and growth opportunities
D. it’s better to give up than persist when faced with difficulty
58. What can drive you to move forward successfully
A. Engaging in self-criticism for every perceived failure.
B. Missing chances to gain insights from challenging situations.
C. Abandoning efforts when confronted with a difficult challenge.
D. Overcoming challenges with confidence and achieving positive results.
59. What might be the cause of failing to adapt to changing conditions
A. You may have negative thoughts about your own abilities.
B. You may have a strong capability for taking calculated risks.
C. You are likely to give up on accomplishing anything significant.
D. You are guaranteed to be always at the forefront of achievements.
60. What message does the passage show
A. The importance of avoiding difficulties.
B. The need to give up when facing challenges.
C. The benefits of staying in your comfort zone.
D. The significance of flexibility and adapting to change.

The essay explains the actions that their schools have taken to help protect the planet, such as organizing an in-school recycling program, planting a garden, and even turning off the lights in an empty classroom. These are all ways in which you and your classmates can be green. The organizers hope that the contest will encourage children and adults to think about how they can help save the earth. The winning school will also receive a hybrid school bus from IC bus and some money for school materials. The bus creates less pollution than ordinary cars and buses.
