14-year-old Jory Thomas was just staying with his grandparents on their campground near Yellowstone River. Jory had his lariat (套索) to practice the roping skills he’d been learning for the past year. That’s when he heard cries for help from the nearby river.
“We all heard, ‘Help, help,’” Jory said to KTVQ News. “There were four people floating (漂浮) down the river.”
A boat carrying four people crashed into a bridge, knocking them all into the Yellowstone River. While three of them made it to shore, the fourth was floating quickly downstream. Without thinking too much, Jory emptied his pockets and took his lariat, rushing to help.
“The current was pretty fast then, and he was moving pretty quickly,” said Jory. “The only thing I could focus on was helping him get out of the water because I didn’t want to see anyone go in front of me.”
Jory had been practicing using a lariat to rope a human-like model on his parents’ farm nearly every afternoon when the weather was fair. Ready for action, Jory ran into the shallower (较浅的) part of the river, getting chest-deep into the water. Letting his training do the work, Jory used his 12-foot lariat to rope the man. Luckily, Jory caught the man on his first try. Then Jory slowly pulled him to shore as other helpers arrived.
Sandy, Jory’s grandmother, said, “The whole community is proud of him. We’ve heard a lot of praise, but that’s Jory. His first reaction always is to help other people. He’s always been that way.”
“Jory saved the man’s life. Had Jory not acted, I believe the chances of this man making it to shore were very slim,” said Sweet Grass County Sheriff Alan Ronneberg. “Jory is a lesson for all of us and showed us what is courageous and right.”
24. How did Jory react to the cries for help
A. He ran away in panic. B. He asked for advice first.
C. He quickly decided to help. D. He checked nearby camps.
25. What played a key role in Jory’s success in saving the man
A. The fair weather. B. The man’s calmness.
C. His great roping skills. D. His grandparents’ encouragement.
26. What does Sandy probably think of Jory’s heroic action
A. Unsurprising. B. Irregular. C. Creative. D. Confusing.
27. Why is Alan Ronneberg mentioned in the text
A. To teach Jory a lesson. B. To speak highly of Jory.
C. To show the man’s thankfulness. D. To stress the importance of safety.

It’s back-to-school season, which means shopping for new clothing. Unless your teen wears a school uniform, it means balancing your child’s wish for fashion with your family’s budget (预算). But it doesn’t have to be a struggle. Being prepared is the key to calm shopping.
When parents approach back-to-school shopping, they see dollar signs, but teens see something different. “What parents need to understand is that back-to-school shopping isn’t just about function (功能) — it’s about identity (身份),” Caitlin Slavens, a parenting expert, told Parents. “For teens, what they wear says who they are, or at least who they’re trying to be.”
You can balance your budget and your child’s wish list by talking with your teen before you shop. Begin by asking why your child wants something. Is it about comfort Beauty Fitting in “If the answer is ‘everyone has it,’ that’s probably a valid need in the teen years,” explained Slavens.
Once your child’s reason is recognized and accepted, you can work on a plan together. You can try to help your child find a more affordable option for what they want. Discuss whether you can find a cheaper one online or at a second-hand shop. Or can your child help buy what they need by using money they earn themselves
You can cut down your back-to-school shopping by buying what they need right now like shoes and lighter weight clothing. Put off shopping for a few weeks to buy jeans, sweatshirts, and winter coats. It is likely that the clothing will be on sale in October to make room for holiday wear.
While saying no to a child is never easy for both you and your child, sometimes it is necessary. “Children need to experience challenges, setbacks, and disappointments to be powerful and independent,” Jeannine Jannot, a psychologist, told Parents. “But at the same time, make sure that your child has a say in their clothing choices so that they can still fit in at school.”
28. What is teens’ opinion about back-to-school shopping
A. It reflects how wealthy a family is. B. It can shape their identity at school.
C. It can take up too much of their time. D. It is more about function than identity.
29. What does the word “valid” in paragraph 3 most probably mean
A. Affordable. B. Informal. C. Reasonable. D. Strange.
30. Which of the following shows Jeannine Jannot’s view
A. Children are too young to shop alone.
B. Shopping always puts kids under pressure.
C. Back-to-school shopping needs to be stopped.
D. Children should have some freedom in choosing clothes.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To test assumptions. B. To offer suggestions.
C. To give explanations. D. To compare recommendations.
D
When people think of Paris, they often think of the Notre Dame Cathedral, the art, the food, and the romantic and magical River Seine that flows through the heart of the city. The Seine is more than just a river — it is a very important part of Paris itself. According to The Guardian, as heat waves hit Europe, the Seine is taking on another role. It’s cooling buildings across Paris.
In the 1990s, a company, Engie, began developing a district cooling network that now covers 75 miles and serves museums, offices, hospitals, schools, and other public buildings. In 2022, the company Fra cheur de Paris, which means “the freshness of Paris,” took over the project and began a multiyear expansion (多年扩张).
Cold water from the Seine flows through one pipe (管道) next to a separate pipe carrying warmer water from city buildings. A thin metal wall and a heat exchanger allow heat to pass from the building water into the river water without the fluids (液体) mixing together. The cooled building water then flows back through connected buildings, while the Seine water returns to the river slightly warmer.
“Although the system returns slightly warmer water to the Seine, monitoring has shown only small, controlled temperature changes that remain within environmental limits, with no clear evidence of ecological harm so far,” said Thibauld Vo ta, an energy and climate expert and adviser. “It’s a great solution in the era of global warming.”
According to The World, the cooling network is part of Paris’s wider strategy to adapt to climate change and rising temperatures. The city has also decided to plant more trees, upgrade public buildings, and encourage people to reduce their use of energy during the summer.
But Paris is not the only city to use its natural water resources as a cooling system. Toronto uses a system that pulls water from Lake Ontario, and Stockholm uses seawater from the Baltic to lower electricity usage amid heat waves.
32. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The history of the project. B. How the project is expanded.
C. How the cooling system works. D. The features of the Seine water.
33. What is Thibauld Vo ta’s attitude towards the system
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Uncaring. D. Unclear.
34. What does Paris plan to do according to the text
A. Turn natural water resources into energy.
B. Apply its strategy in other European cities.
C. Encourage people to stay indoors in summer.
D. Take further steps to adapt to climate change.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. The Seine Water Is Cooling Down B. The Seine Affects Climate Change
C. A New System Has Gained Popularity D. Paris Uses the Seine to Cool Buildings

How to Practice English Speaking Alone
There are many ways that you can practice your spoken English by yourself! Here, we’ve gathered some of the best ways to work on your pronunciation and the fluency (流利) of your speech, even if no one else is around to hear you.
Speak in front of a mirror.
Pronouncing words correctly has a lot to do with getting your mouth in the right shape to make the necessary sound. By speaking in front of a mirror, you can see what your mouth is doing and correct what’s wrong. 36 That can help build your confidence without the stress of talking to a real partner.
Read aloud to yourself.
37 There are many words in English that are spelled differently than they sound. Reading aloud is a different kind of speaking practice, in that it helps you better understand how words are written in English as well as how they’re spoken.
38
Play a video with a native speaker talking in English. After each sentence, pause (暂停) the video and repeat the sentence aloud. Rewind the video and listen to the native speaker again, and then repeat it again yourself. 39 It can take some time to get through even the shortest video like this, but you’ll get a lot of good English practice.
Narrate (叙述) your actions.
As you go about your day, pretend you’re a character in a novel and tell your “reader” about your every move. Don’t worry about getting everything grammatically correct. 40
A. Record your voice from time to time.
B. Listen to spoken English and repeat it back.
C. Pay attention to your movements in the mirror.
D. When you get one sentence right, move on to the next.
E. The mirror also makes you feel that you have a partner.
F. This gives you a chance to practice reading and speaking.
G. Instead, just work on expressing yourself and describing actions.

W: No, I can’t. Have you taken a photo with your new digital camera

M: I’ve no idea. All I know is that I’m already late for my meeting.
(Text 5)
M: They may be proud of the new conditions, but I’m not happy with that. Their nurses are not friendly and everything seems to be running behind schedule.
W: Not to mention the fact that it’s noisy because no one is responsible for visiting hours.
(Text 6)
W: Jim, it’s Catherine here. Thanks for your email, but unluckily I’ve got a problem now.
M: Oh, what’s that
W: I’m afraid I have to be out of the office to attend a lecture all day tomorrow on Wednesday. Could we meet the following day instead
M: No problem. What time would be OK with you
W: If we say Thursday morning, is that all right with you
M: Yes, that’s fine.
W: Could we make it 10 o’clock
M: That’s OK. See you.
(Text 7)
W: My mother asked me to develop a web page for her office rapidly. I found a lot of help on the Internet but I don’t feel really confident. I want to do a good job. But it’s a big challenge.
M: My cousin, Bob, is very good at things like that. Maybe he could help.
W: But I don’t have a lot of money to spend.
M: Oh, don’t worry. Just invite him to pizza and he’ll be glad to help.
W: I’ve got all the information we need. When do you think we could get together

W: That’s great.
(Text 8)

W: Don’t worry. I’ll help you solve the biggest problem — buying you a new wallet.
M: It is kind of you.

(Text 9)
W: Welcome back! How was your vacation in Rome
M: Vacation No, I was there on business. But after the meeting there, I went to Paris because I had a get-together party with my college friends there. Then it was a trip to Paris.
W: How was it
M: Fantastic. I went to many famous tourist attractions. Look, this is a picture I took on the top of the Eiffel Tower. It’s on my third day in Paris, and the next day I took the evening flight to come back.
W: Oh, then did you go to the Louvre
M: Of course! That was the first thing I did in Paris. You can’t go to Paris without going to their most famous art gallery!
W: Did you see the Mona Lisa
M: Yes. But I wasn’t curious about the smile of Mona Lisa or the good skill of the painter. I was surprised by how small the Mona Lisa was, though.
(Text 10)
M: I’ve lived on an island off the west coast of Scotland. I love it here but a trip to the cinema means a 55-minute boat journey plus a half-hour drive to the nearest town. That’s why we all get so excited about the Screen Machine. It’s a mobile cinema that travels round the Scottish islands, visiting 23 different areas in turn every seven weeks. You can’t miss the huge, bright blue Screen Machine when it comes into the car park. It takes an hour to change it into a comfortable, air-conditioned 80-seat cinema. It’s amazing.
