As a mushroom scientist, you are vastly outnumbered. It is estimated that there are between 2. 2 million and 3. 8 million species of fungi (真菌), the majority of which are yet to be identified. However, professionals in the field are not alone in their efforts to uncover new species. A passionate community of hobbyists has appeared, bridging the gap between professionals and non-professionals. These hobbyists have even made significant discoveries. One such hobbyist is Taylor Lockwood, a 74-year-old mushroom fan and professional photographer.
In 1984, while living on the Mendocino coast of California, mushrooms became attractive to Taylor Lockwood. “Outside my house were these amazing mushrooms, ” he says. “And it was as if these mushrooms looked at me and said, ‘Taylor, go out and tell the world how pretty we are. ’” Lockwood answered their call and bought camera equipment to capture (拍摄) their true nature. His passion for photographing mushrooms was so strong that he would even dig holes next to the mushrooms to get the perfect position for his shots.
In the Monongahela National Forest, Taylor Lockwood discovered an unusual mushroom that looked like tiny fingers wearing off-white gloves. Upon further investigation, fungi researcher Amy Rossman confirmed that it was a “hazel glove” mushroom, which is an uncommon find. “Mushrooms are not like plants, ” Rossman says. “They don’t come up at the same time every year, and sometimes it can be decades between when a fungus fruits. ” Rossman says that’s why it’s so valuable to have people like Taylor Lockwood searching through the forest with a trained eye.
A few years ago, Taylor Lockwood realized that still photos weren’t sufficient, so he chose to create time-lapse (延时拍摄的) videos of mushrooms. “When I do time-lapse, I see so much life happening around the mushrooms—insects, worms and other small creatures interacting with them, ” he says. Lockwood’s love for art is evident in his approach to filming mushrooms over time. Although he appreciates the scientific feature of his work, he identifies himself as an artist at heart.
19. What can we learn about mushroom lovers from paragraph 1
A. They keep close track of the growth of fungi.
B. They replace professional scientists in the field.
C. They help identify new species of mushroom.
D. They classify the majority of mushroom species.
20. What inspired Lockwood to photograph mushrooms
A. His desire for knowledge. B. The beauty of nearby mushrooms.

21. Which of the following best describes Lockwood according to paragraph 3
A. Organized and responsible. B. Focused and flexible.
C. Talented and positive. D. Skilled and observant.
22. Why did Lockwood decide to make time-lapse videos of mushrooms
A. To improve his photography skills.
B. To use a new approach to scientific studies.
C. To capture energetic life in an artistic way.
D. To collect data about nature for further research.

Researchers at MIT created a high-tech pill (药片) that starts to vibrate (震动) once it makes contact with liquid in the user’s stomach and make him or her feel full. The pill was reportedly thought up by Shriya Srinivasan, currently an assistant professor of bioengineering at Harvard University.
VIBES, short for Vibrating Ingestible Bio Electronic Stimulator, was only recently made public in a study published in the Science Journal, but it is already being announced by the media as the future of weight loss. Although it has yet to be tested on humans, trials on pigs have achieved very hopeful results. After about 30 minutes of VIBES activity, pigs ate on average almost 40 percent less food in the next half hour than they did without the smart pill. Apparently, the novel device works by activating stretch receptors in the stomach, modeling the presence of food. This in turn signals the brain to increase the levels of hormones (激素) that make us feel full. The vibrating stimulator, which is about the size of a vitamin pill, is powered by battery and activated either by the stomach liquid breaking down the coat around the pill, or by an incorporated timer. After producing the desired effect, the pill exits the body with other solid waste.
The good news is that it is expected to have a cost within dollar range, and researchers say that it may eventually be possible to implant the stimulator and thus remove the need for people to constantly take it.
“Our study demonstrates the effectiveness of a low-cost, non-operative intervention to reduce food intake and calorie burning. The device functions effectively in the stomach, leading to fullness, ” said Giovanni Traverso, co-author of the study. “The device has the potential to overturn options for weight loss treatment. However, future studies will need to explore the physiological effects of the device before it’s available for patients. ”
Researchers are now exploring ways to increase the producing of VIBES capsules, which could enable clinical trials in humans.
23. What is the outcome of taking the pill
A. Food storage. B. Recovery of users. C. Liquid production.
D. Sensation of fullness.
24. Which aspect of the device is mentioned in paragraph 2
A. Its testing history. B. Its side effect. C. Its working principle. D. Its intelligence.
25. What is Giovanni Traverso’s attitude towards the future of the device
A. Worried. B. Watchful. C. Doubtful. D. Confused.
26. What is the researchers’ ultimate goal of the device
A. To fix it in human body. B. To destroy the coat around it.
C. To produce stomach liquid with it. D. To remove solid waste from it.

A team led by Geoffrey W. Marcy of the University of California, Berkeley, announced they had found two planetary systems, one of them just 15 light-years away from the Earth. Each system features a star roughly similar to the sun and some very unusual planets.
Among the 50 or so stars where extra-solar planets have been studied, scientists have reported only one with more than a single planet. These new systems bring some surprises. One has a huge object which may be a failed star. The other system has two planets that move in a special way around their star.
The planets were not seen directly. Instead, the group measured the wobbles that the orbiting bodies produce in their respective suns. The wobble is caused by the pull of the planets as they orbit their stars.
In the first system, the sun-like star HD 168443 is 123 light-years away from the Earth. One planet, already known, is seven times the size of Jupiter. Now, the researchers find that HD 168443 has a second companion, which is at least 17 times bigger than Jupiter. That’s too massive for a normal planet but not quite big enough to be a real star. It might be a “brown dwarf”, a kind of failed star.
The second system orbits the red dwarf star Gliese 876. One planet orbits the star in 61 days. The other orbits in about 30 days. These two planets pull on each other and move in a stable (稳定的) pattern.
The planets’ orbital harmony may enable the researchers to measure the actual mass of each body. Geoffrey speculates (推测) that the two haven’t always had this special relationship. The inner one has moved closer to the parent star and the outer one followed at a more rapid clip. “Understanding this system could open windows on the diversity of planet formation in the universe, ” Geoffrey says.
27. What can we know about the two planetary systems
A. They will become livable in the near future.
B. They will fall into failed stars in some ways.
C. They are the same as the sun and other planets.
D. They are different from the stars studied before.
28. How does the author present the first system in paragraph 4
A. By giving examples. B. By making a summary.
C. By explaining an idea. D. By drawing comparisons.
29. What are Geoffrey’s words mainly about
A. The significance of the finding. B. A way to measure a planet.
C. A problem with the far planets. D. The importance of finding life.
30. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. Relationships between the Sun and the Earth
B. Scientists Found New Planetary Systems
C. The Force Affecting the Movement of Planets
D. Planet Hunters Explored the Solar System

This is a reminder that the All-City Math Competition will be held in two weeks. The competition is open to fourth and sixth graders, and the top prize is fifty dollars. If you are interested in it, please speak to your teacher. ”
Wilson’s eyes lit up at the mention of the competition. He had always loved math and felt confident in his ability. “I will do really well in that competition, ” he said to himself. When the bell rang and the class flooded into the hallway, Wilson saw his math teacher, Ms Jones, was still at her desk. He quickly made his way over to her. “Ms Jones ” he began, trying to sound as formal as possible. “I would like to take part in the math competition. ”
Ms Jones looked up from her papers and said, “That’s wonderful, Wilson, but I’m afraid that this competition is only for fourth and sixth graders. Besides, we haven’t covered most of the knowledge that will be tested in the competition. ”
“But you know I’m good at math!” Wilson protested. “I do math problems with my elder brother every day—and he’s in sixth grade! I think I could do really well!”
Ms Jones shook her head slightly and gave Wilson a compassionate (同情的) look. “You are a very good math student, Wilson, but rules are rules. I’m sure that you can enter next year. ”
Wilson’s heart sank when he heard the words. He knew that Ms Jones was right, but it didn’t make him feel any less disappointed. “Okay, ” he said in a low voice, “I understand. ”

Paragraph 1
Wilson came home upset, going straight upstairs without talking to his mother. Closing his bedroom door, he sat at the desk and stared at his math exercise book. He was unwilling to give up the chance. After thinking for a long time, he made up his mind to prepare for the competition on his own. He took out his elder brother’s competition materials and worked out the difficult math problems every night. He hoped to show Ms Jones his progress, even if he could not take part this time.
Paragraph 2
The next day, Wilson arrived at school an hour early and found Ms Jones already at her desk. He walked to her nervously and handed his exercise book to her. Ms Jones looked through his work in surprise. She praised Wilson for his great efforts and excellent skills. Though he could not join the competition, she promised to guide him with those difficult math problems. Wilson smiled with great joy. He realized that his efforts would pay off one day when he took part in the competition the next year.
