Born in 1949, Diana Nyad developed an early interest in swimming and became a Florida State High School swimming champion. Like many young athletes, she dreamed of competing in the Olympics, but a serious illness ruined her chance to qualify for the Games. However, the disappointment did not stop her from moving forward. Instead, she turned her focus to marathon swimming. A naturally gifted athlete, Nyad was physically well-conditioned to endure long periods in the water. As a long-distance swimmer, she would compete not only against herself but also against obstacles such as distance, danger, cold, and exhaustion.
Over the next ten years, Nyad dedicated herself to becoming one of the world’s top long-distance swimmers. In 1970, she swam a ten-mile marathon in Lake Ontario, setting the women’s record for that course. In 1972, she broke another record by swimming 102.5 miles from a Bahamian island to the Florida coast. Then, in 1975, she broke a third record when she swam around Manhattan Island.
Nyad attempted to swim the distance between Florida and Cuba in 1978. Though the stretch of water is less than 100 miles wide, it is rough and dangerous. After battling the water for two days, she was forced to abandon the attempt to protect her health and safety. Even so, she impressed the world with her courage and strong desire to succeed. For Nyad, the strength of her purpose mattered as much as reaching Cuba itself. “That was how I defined success,” she later reflected: “It didn’t matter that my swim fell short — I believed I had already touched the other shore.”
To her, success was never just about crossing a finish line — it was about refusing to back down from a dream. When Nyad eventually retired from swimming, she continued to take on new challenges: traveling the world as a reporter, writing books, and delivering public speeches about her life journey. Today, Diana Nyad still works to inspire others, just as she did when she swam the world’s most daunting waters.

A. She trained young swimmers to achieve their Olympic dreams.
B. She reported on global events as a traveling journalist.

Drama, fantastic movies and profound literature are important carriers of human civilization and precious spiritual wealth that enriches our daily life, especially for senior high school students who are growing up quickly. They are not simply a common form of entertainment for killing spare time, but also a very meaningful way to broaden our narrow horizons, shape our correct core values and deepen our genuine understanding of real life and complex human society. In our lively school art festivals and various colorful campus activities, many enthusiastic students are always eager to play the leading role in different wonderful plays and impressive public performances.
To give a really wonderful and unforgettable show that leaves a deep impression on the audience, they have to spend a lot of valuable spare time learning the lines by heart and practicing their acting repeatedly to improve their basic acting skills and boost their personal confidence on stage. Nowadays, many inspiring and educational films that are widely loved by the public are adapted from novels written by outstanding contemporary writers, and some of them quickly become popular hit movies that deeply touch the hearts of millions of different viewers across the whole country. At our school, we are strongly encouraged by our teachers to read widely and selectively in our spare time, especially fascinating science fiction and classic literary works that have stood the test of time.
Stories that are full of rich imagination can greatly inspire our creative thinking, open up our narrow minds and deepen our understanding of complex human nature and diverse modern society. Those excellent books with positive themes and profound ideas often become popular bestsellers among curious and energetic teenagers. Standing confidently on the public stage means great courage, important responsibility and honest self-expression, which gradually helps us become more confident, expressive and emotionally mature as we grow up. Literature and art guide us to think independently and grow into more thoughtful and positive teenagers who are ready for future challenges.

Happiness has many levels, and it is difficult to place the word “happy” in one specific category.
I believe that age and happiness are related, but to a certain degree. When asked “What makes you happy ” my twelve-year-old sister initially laughed, claiming she didn’t know. She then answered with “sleeping”, and looked at me for a reaction. When I had none, she changed her answer to food, then to fashion, and finally to family, each time glancing at me looking for validation that she gave a “right” answer. When I told her that there was no correct answer and asked for her final choice, she went back to her original response, sleeping. My younger cousin, also twelve years old, had a surprising answer — not eating candy or watching TV, but helping others. They are both twelve, and watch the same things and listen to the same music, yet my sister was the one that gave many different answers, trying to find the “right” one. I believe this apprehension is deeply rooted in today’s society, and that teenagers are truly afraid to be different and stand for their beliefs, even with something as simple as answering the question of what makes them happy.
Facing the same question, my grandmother immediately answered with her family. Is this because of her age Or her personality I know for sure if someone asked my grandma this question thirty years ago she would still say her family makes her happy, as she is and always will be a family-oriented person.
As for me, my family and friends make me happy, but so do reading, watching movies, and even eating ice cream. There isn’t one singular thing that makes me the happiest, because, like everybody, my mood depends on many factors. Sure, my family makes me happy, but not when I fight with my sister; reading a good book makes me happy, but not when I have a headache. Happiness depends on external factors, personality and age. The journey of happiness truly cannot be defined, and no one has one thing above all that makes them the happiest.
57. How did the author’s sister respond to her question
A. She didn’t answer it honestly. B. She answered it with uncertainty.
C. She gave a wrong answer at first. D. She tried to give as many answers as possible.
58. The author uses her sister’s and cousin’s cases to indicate that .
A. young people can easily feel happiness
B. young people often have low-level happiness
C. happiness doesn’t always largely depend on age
D. the cause of happiness varies from person to person
59. What does the underlined word “apprehension” in Para.2 mean
A. Creativity. B. Enthusiasm. C. Casualness. D. Anxiety.
60. What does the author mainly talk about in this passage
A. The categories of happiness. B. The standard of happiness.
C. The true definition of happiness. D. The complexity and diversity of happiness.

Too Far Away from It All
A TV series in England, Away from It All, has surprised everyone by becoming a huge success with young people.
Its success is surprising because its main character is a shepherd (牧羊人), and the series is about the relaxing lifestyles of people who live in the country. There is none of the action that we usually see on TV. There are also no stressful moments, busy offices, or crowded cities. Away from It All is set in the peaceful English countryside and tells simple stories of people’s kindness.
The director of the series says its success is a sign of teenagers suffering from stress. He says that watching Away from It All helps teenagers forget about the pressures of exams and homework, and the troubles that fill the world. He also claims that it’s a good sign that today’s youth are switching to happier TV series, as it shows they would like a happier and healthier life.
Although the series’ success might have a good side, many teachers and parents are worried. They say that some of their students and children are becoming couch potatoes and are using Away from It All as an excuse for not completing homework. Some students have even refused to study for exams because they say that they can only achieve happiness by avoiding stressful situations completely.
One mother, Lucy Linney, said of her son Patrick, “Before he started watching Away from It All, he loved challenges and volunteered every afternoon. But now he has become a couch potato. His grades have dropped and he no longer volunteers. He says it doesn’t matter as he just wants to ‘get away from it all’.”
And what do the experts say Paula Ray, a doctor, says that TV can influence young people’s lifestyles. But she says that if a young person reacts as strongly as Patrick, it’s likely that there are other reasons for his change in the behaviour.

Dear Sir / Madam,
I am Li Jin from Chenguang High School. Learning that the "Online Cultural Buddies Project" is recruiting student cultural ambassadors, I am writing to apply for this position with great enthusiasm.
From my perspective, this project is more than just an online exchange; it serves as a golden bridge connecting Chinese and Italian youth. It allows us to break down cultural barriers and foster mutual understanding, which is exactly what global citizenship requires today.
I believe I am competent for this role. Being an outgoing and open-minded person, I have a good command of oral English. Besides, I am fond of traditional folk music and skilled at making short videos.
If I am lucky enough to be chosen, I plan to share Chinese folk music through video meetings. I will prepare short videos introducing musical instruments and play simple pieces for Italian students. Meanwhile, I am eager to listen to their stories about Italian culture. I hope we can learn from each other and build close friendship.
I would appreciate it if you could consider my application.
Sincerely yours,
Li Jin

W: Sam, your swimming coach called about this week's lesson. It'll be on Tuesday, not on Thursday as it usually is. It's still at 6 p. M, though. We'll leave half an hour earlier that day.
M: Okay, mom.
Text 2
W: It's such a pity that I can't go to New Directions concert tomorrow. Ross, can you help get me a T-shirt that has their faces on it
M: Sure. Just focus on your exams, Linda.
Text 3
W: Oh, Mr Smith, before you go, I need to send out the agenda for next Monday's meeting. Who will be there
M: John Brown from sales will be there, and so will Mary Jones from purchasing.
Text 4
M: Joanna, the weather forecast says there are going to be rainstorms tomorrow, so the party will be held in the music hall rather than on the school playground.
W: Okay, do I still need to send these posters to Missus Bloom
M: Yes, she's in the dining room now.
Text 5
M: How can you maintain eye contact with 500 people
W: Well, you can't with all of them, but a good technique is to look at the audience occasionally from side to side and front to back to give the impression that you're talking to everyone.
Text 6
M: Anne, you met some wild animal in your seaside cottage yesterday. What happened
W: Well, returning from the gym yesterday morning, I noticed some baskets in the storeroom knocked over. I thought it might be the result of my cat Coco chasing after a rabbit. But it wasn't. It was a sea lion.
M: How did that cute animal get in
W: My cottage is just about 200 meters from the sea. It might have followed Coco into the house. When I stepped into the living room, it was sleeping on the sofa.
M: What did you do The sea lion belongs in the sea, doesn't it
W: Yes. Mark knows people from the department of conservation. He made a call when I managed to lead it out into the garden. Shortly after, people from the department of conservation came and returned it to the ocean.

W: John, what made you decide to enter that half Marathon
M: Well, many celebrities have recently taken up running. One in particular ran twice the distance. I did. That impressed me. But my dad's a keen runner, too. But what really made me get my running shoes out Was my brother's attitude. They bet I was too lazy to compete in any race, so I was determined to surprise them.
W: How much training did you do beforehand
M: I was pretty organized. I drew up a two month training plan starting from October the eighth. And established goals that I thought would be manageable. However, I pushed myself too hard without resting and recovering between training sessions.
W: Were there any difficulties during the training
M: Yes. The alarm went off really early every school day. And it was freezing outside, but that didn't put me off getting back in time for the school bus. Caused problems, though.
W: Did you follow a special diet
M: Well, some runners do things like eating high protein diets, but I just tried to eat healthily, avoiding chocolate and chips. Then about a week before the race, I started eating more noodles and pizzas to build up my energy levels.

M: Last month, Missus Lee chose a classical play for us to perform for our parents. I'd never performed on any stage or even sung publicly, so I had no idea whether I'd be any good. However. I soon got engaged in all the preparations, learning my lines and choosing the costume. I was given quite a big part to play because my classmates believed I had a powerful voice. We had lots of practice, and soon everyone could remember their words perfectly. That part went smoothly. After that, we all got to see what we were going to wear for the performance. My costume was a beautiful long dress in a quite old fashioned style, a bit long, though. We contacted the costume designer and had that problem solved easily. Finally, when I put it on, all my thoughts of nervousness disappeared. By the time I went on stage, I was 100% perfect and super confident. The audience were clearly impressed by the performance, too. Above all. The whole process totally brought the class together and I got to cooperate with some classmates I barely knew, which was fantastic.
