For the two-week summer program, I chose to focus on a biology project. My research centred on investigating the presence and impact of bacteria in different water sources, specifically comparing wild lake water with home pool water to determine which was more harmful. This topic interested me because it combined both environmental science and public health, two topics I’m deeply passionate about.
The laboratory work was challenging but extremely rewarding. I remember the first day I set out to collect water samples(样本). The lake was peaceful, but beneath the calm surface hid something far less harmless. In contrast, the pool’s crystal-clear water seemed almost too clean, and I wondered how the tests would turn out.
Back in the lab, I analyzed the samples. The process involved culturing the bacteria, monitoring their growth and comparing the results from both sources. When the data were finally generated, they were both shocking and enlightening. The lake water, despite its beautiful appearance, was full of bacteria—definitely not safe for drinking. On the other hand, the pool water was surprisingly clean, with hardly any bacteria present. These results highlighted the importance of clean water and sanitation(卫生设施体系) and the hidden dangers that untreated water can pose.
Once my experiments were completed, I poured all my energy into writing a detailed report. I wanted to make sure that my findings were clear and accurate to convey the significance of the research. On the last day of the seminar, I had the opportunity to present my work to a group of 15 mentors. Standing before them, explaining my project, I felt proud—I was not just a student; I was like a scientist sharing my discoveries with the world.

Of all the creatures on the planet, the narwhal(独角鲸) has the strangest appearance. It’s a whale which has a long tooth coming out of its head; that’s how it got its nickname, the unicorn(独角兽) of the sea. They live in the Arctic Ocean off the coast of Canada, Russia and East Greenland. However, experts say some populations of narwhals could be extinct, and it’s all due to noise pollution.
Narwhals rely on echolocation(回声定位), which they use to find food and detect their surroundings. They produce a sound wave that travels through water until it encounters an object. They receive this reflected sound with their lower jaws, and obtain the information on features like size and shape.
However, the increase in human activities in the sea, as well as climate change, has resulted in the Arctic Ocean becoming noisier, which means it’s more difficult for narwhals to rely on sound. Susanna Blackwell, who studies the effects of underwater noise on sea animals, told the BBC that there is noisier activity in the Arctic Ocean than ever because, as sea ice melts, new routes are opening. And while icebergs’ breaking has been part of the ocean sound for hundreds of years, man-made noise is much harder for animals to adapt to, particularly as these changes are so sudden.
Research in 2023 recorded the reactions of narwhals to the imitated noises made by a guard ship. The scientists marked and tracked the creatures and found that, on hearing these sounds, they ended deep dives and stopped clicking, the echolocation signal they use for finding food underwater. This is the same reaction that narwhals have to orcas(虎鲸), which hunt them, meaning man-made noise could touch the creature’s “threat button”.
So, what can we do Charlotte Findlay, a assistant professor at Heriot-Watt University, says, “Noise is actually quite easy to solve. We need to either turn it off or turn it down.”
28.What can be the main factor in causing the extinction of narwhals
A.Its hunters. B.Noise pollution.
C.Its strange appearance. D.Climate change.
29.How does a narwhal detect its surroundings

Artificial intelligence (AI) has shown competence across various fields, but matching human creativity remains hard to achieve. However, companies like StoryFit are using AI in a very novel way, particularly in the film industry, where it is changing greatly how scripts are developed, and stories are told.
Initially, Monica Landers, founder and CEO of StoryFit, used AI technology to aid publishers in narrowing down their “slush piles(废稿堆)” to a shortlist of promising books. However, StoryFit found the publishing industry’s growth potential insufficient and targeted the film industry instead. Consequently, it has become the force behind several successful films in recent years.
Primarily, StoryFit analyzes a script’s marketability(市场潜力), assessing where a story fits the audience and how each storytelling element connects with audiences. The film industry is high-risk, with considerable investments required before generating returns. StoryFit provides data on whether those risks are likely to be fruitful. StoryFit’s AI technology checks character qualities to evaluate the audience’s responses, determining how heroic or relatable a main character might be. This information allows creative professionals to identify potential character imbalances.
Beyond marketability, StoryFit also analyzes the audience’s connections to the storyline, offering insights into aspects such as the audience’s emotional journey throughout an episode or the impact of a favorite character’s departure. The company also reports on plot inconsistencies, such as characters behaving inconsistently with their established qualities or disappearing from the storyline. Nevertheless, Landers emphasizes that their role is to draw inspiration from the data rather than comment on the script. She stated, “You have people whose whole careers are based on making those decisions. But we can be a technology voice that helps them to throw light on what’s happening or not happening in the script.”
Using AI technology like StoryFit in the film industry shows artificial intelligence’s potential to enhance storytelling. As the technology advances, its impact on the film industry will only grow, paving the way for more engaging and emotional cinematic experiences.
32.What caused StoryFit to shift its focus from publishing to film
A.The limited future of publishing.
B.The financial difficulties of publishing.
C.The lack of AI competence in publishing.
D.The decreasing customer base of publishing.
33.According to Landers, what is StoryFit’s role in script analysis
A.A decision-maker. B.A content developer.
C.A data-driven advisor. D.A marketing specialist.
34.What is the author’s attitude toward the application of AI in the film industry
A.Unclear. B.Negative. C.Objective. D.Supportive.
35.What is the best title for the passage
A.AI Fails to Match Human Creativity
B.AI Transforms Script Development in Film
C.A Great Company Leading the Film Industry
D.The Challenges of AI in High-Risk Industries

第二节(满分25分)
  阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Alice sat in the car while palm trees seemed to speed by the car window. Eight-year-old Alice began to get nervous, the way she always did in new surroundings. She felt a thin shine of sweat above her lip in spite of the car’s cool air. “The aquarium(水族馆) won’t be crowded, I bet, and people are going to notice me. I hate wearing this prosthetic leg(假肢),” she thought to herself. “Not being normal is the worst.” She felt tears coming from her eyes.
Entering the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, around a corner of a tank, she noticed an animal that looked unusual. “Is that a dolphin with a prosthetic tail instead of a real tail ” she asked an aquarium staff member. He nodded and replied, “Yes, that’s Betty. She’s a very special dolphin.” “What happened to her ” “This dolphin was found off the coast of Florida, caught in a crab trap. The ropes from the trap cut off the blood circulation to her tail. So she lost her tail.” Alice caught her breath. “She’s just like me.” “But she struggled to survive. Now she wears a prosthetic tail to help her swim as a dolphin’s supposed to swim,” the staff member continued. “Every day, Betty shows us anything is possible if we believe in ourselves.”
Alice felt her heart was touched. She waved at Betty. Looking at Alice, Betty raised her flippers(鳍), came to her and lifted her head. “She’s swimming right into my arms,” Alice said tearfully. They made eye contact. She seemed to be speaking to Alice, “We’re the same.”
Back home, all Alice talked about was Betty. For two weeks, she cried and begged her mother to take her back to Clearwater.
Unfortunately, another blow hit Alice. She fell on the hardwood floor at home and broke her other leg. Alice suffered the pain in her leg. After a thorough examination, the doctor explained bad news to them that she would need some surgery on her leg. Years of a living hell(地狱) came back to her.
She started fearing surgery again and refused to go to hospital for treatment.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
“How can I persuade Alice to undergo the surgery ”Alice’s mom said to herself.

Encouraged by Betty,Alice changed her mind and did what her mother and doctor had told her to.

第四部分 写作
第一节
One possible version:
Protect Animals
Animals play a vital role in maintaining an ecological balance. They contribute to healthy ecosystems, which humans rely on for clean air, water, and food. Protecting them ensures our own survival and preserves biodiversity.
However, humans harm animals in many ways. Some hunt them for fur or ivory, while others destroy their habitats through deforestation and pollution. These actions can drive many species to the edge of extinction.
To protect animals, governments should enforce strict laws against hunting and habitat destruction. Individuals can help by refusing to buy products made of wild animals and raising awareness of protecting animals. Together, we can create a safer world for all creatures.
第二节
One possible version:
“How can I persuade Alice to undergo the surgery ”Alice’s mom said to herself. Then she had an idea and she decided to take Alice back to Clearwater. On arriving at Clearwater, Alice couldn’t wait to see Betty, the lovely dolphin that comforted her and boosted her mood. As Alice’s mother wheeled Alice towards Betty, she raised her flippers, came to them and lifted her head. Looking at the girl, Betty seemed to say, “Be brave and believe in yourself.” Alice absolutely knew what the caring eyes were conveying, so she decided to keep a more optimistic state of mind.
Encouraged by Betty,Alice changed her mind and did what her mother and doctor had told her to. Finally came the day when Alice was in the hospital again. Though feeling nervous and afraid of the pain the surgery might bring, Alice faced it bravely. The operation was a success. Her mother took her to Clearwater on the day when she was discharged from hospital. Inspired by Betty’s swimming like a normal dolphin, Alice practiced walking hard. Her confidence had been improved as she gradually recovered. She had no idea what her future would be like but she would do anything to have a better look at this wonderful world.
