If you enjoy drawing, we invite you to use your skills to enter our sixth annual Winter Cover Contest. We are holding a competition to select artwork for the cover of an upcoming issue of the magazine. As you prepare to draw, think about what kind of image would attract readers when they receive their copy of The Week Junior by mail. Follow the steps below to apply — and good luck!

Once you begin, create your work in full color. Finally, write down the title of your drawing at the bottom of the form. If you need another form to complete your design, you can download one from https://kids./ activities.
Step two: Follow the application rules
When you’re happy with your cover design, tell a parent to sign the agreement form. They should go to https://kids./activities to download and print the form, fill it out, and sign it. To officially enter, the signed agreement form and a digital image of your artwork should be emailed to covercontest@.
Step three: Meet the deadline

In the first week of high school, I felt like a tiny boat lost in a vast ocean. The hallways were crowded with strangers, and everyone seemed to have already found their groups. I missed my old friends terribly and doubted whether I would ever find new ones.
Then came the art class project. We were asked to paint a partner’s portrait (肖像). My partner was Kevin, a quiet boy who rarely spoke in class. I believed it would be an awkward experience. However, as we sat facing each other, something unexpected happened. Without saying much, we started observing (观察) each other — the way we held our brushes, the slight nod of our heads, and the occasional smile of focus.
We didn’t need to fill the silence with small talk. Instead, our communication flowed through gestures and expressions. When I mixed a color wrongly, Kevin would point to the right one with his brush. When he got stuck on the shape of my glasses, I changed my position to give him a clearer angle (角度). By the end of the class, we had two imperfect but honest portraits.
That was the beginning of our friendship. Over the next few weeks, we discovered that Kevin’s silence did not mean he was unfriendly; he simply valued words and used them carefully. We started sharing lunch, walking to the library together, and even laughing at the same jokes. I realized that friendship doesn’t always start with a loud “Hello.” Sometimes, it whispers (小声说) through a shared glance or a helping hand.
Now, as I look back, I understand that high school is not about fitting in immediately. It’s about finding those who see you, even when you’re not speaking.
24. How did the author feel in the first week of high school
A. She was glad to meet new classmates. B. She was sure to make new friends.
C. She was angry at the art project. D. She felt worried and out of place.
25. Which of the following best describes Kevin according to the passage
A. Shy but thoughtful. B. Talkative and humorous.
C. Proud and cold-hearted. D. Strict but helpful.
26. What can we learn from the text
A. Art is the best way to make friends. B. Friendship can grow without many words.
C. Students should have more art classes. D. Making friends is easy in high school.
27. What is the main idea of the passage
A. How to paint a good portrait. B. Difficulties of high school life.
C. A real personal story. D. The importance of art lessons.
C
Heat waves are becoming more common. Besides direct health risks, high heat also brings indirect influences. Many studies show that high temperatures do harm to our brain’s ability to think, and this will cause us to make poor choices.
A research team carried out a study on college students during a heat wave. The researchers wanted to learn how high temperatures would influence people’s thinking. For twelve days in July, students took two tests every day. One test was about simple number-calculating (计算) work. The other tested their ability to control their feelings and focus attention.
Some students lived in buildings with air-conditioning (AC), while others did not. The AC group stayed in cool rooms, while the non-AC group lived in much hotter places. The result was clear: students without AC got fewer correct answers and acted more slowly in the experiments.
Such studies have disadvantages, for example, not many people took part in the experiments. However, more experiments support the idea. When people are placed in hot environments, their memory, attention and problem-solving skills become worse. So high heat may truly impair our thinking ability.
The effect of heat on our thinking comes mainly from our body’s physical state. The old saying ‘in the heat of the moment’ usually means bad choices caused by strong feelings. Now we find it is also true in a real-life sense. As heat waves appear more often, we should be careful when we make important decisions.
We’d better avoid important choices on hot days. Take time to think twice, and ask for others’ advice before making up our mind. If we have to make them, cool ourselves down first.
28. What is the main finding of the study on college students
A. AC improves school points. B. Heat hurts mental performance.
C. Tests improve self-control. D. Heat harms physical condition.
29. What does the underlined word “impair” in paragraph 4 most probably mean
A. Improve. B. Weaken. C. Show. D. Require.
30. Why does the writer mention the old saying in paragraph 5
A. To show heat may cause unwise decisions. B. To explain the meaning of strong feelings.
C. To introduce a real-life experience. D. To offer tips for hot-day activities.
31. What will the author most probably talk about next
A. Heat influences on health. B. Different views on the study.
C. More ways to keep cool. D. Choices to improve memory.
D
A new study carried out among teenagers in a high school theater program showed how to use positive emotions (情绪) to drive their work. Students also used strategies to manage their own and others’ bad emotions. The research was carried out through interviews with the students during a three-month theater program. This study showed how schools and programs can support the development of “emotional intelligence” in teenagers.
Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign started open-ended interviews to get an in-depth understanding of one setting — a high school theater program. Ten teenagers were interviewed every two weeks over a three-month period while the theater group prepared a musical. Two adults who guided the production were also interviewed every two weeks. What’s more, the researchers observed the rehearsals (观察排练) weekly.
During the rehearsals, teenagers reported emotional experiences, including sadness, anger, anxiety. and excitement. The program provided a culture that helped them learn to deal well with the events and feelings connected to these different emotions, the researchers found. The adults led by example, helping the teens develop strategies to manage strong emotions.
The theater setting supported this process (过程) by putting the youth in situations in which emotions were likely to happen because the expectation of hard work created stress. Also, strong emotions were accepted and discussed openly with a culture of caring about others.
“The development of ‘emotional intelligence’ is important to adult work and family life, but many young people arrive in adulthood with incomplete emotional skills,” according to Reed W. Larson, the study’s lead author. “Our research findings suggest how, under the right conditions, teenagers learn these skills. Although further research is needed, youth programs, such as the theater program, along with schools that provide these conditions may lead to better emotional learning.”
32. What did the new study find
A. High school teaching is a performing art.
B. Emotional skills are important to student success.
C. Theater programs are popular among high schoolers.
D. Doing theater helps teenagers with emotional growth.
33. How did the researchers get information for the study
A. By preparing a musical. B. By holding interviews.
C. By reviewing students’ performances. D. By teaching at the local school.
34. What can we know about the adults in the theater program
A. They were in control of the new study.
B. They provided models for the students.
C. They were close observers of the program.
D. They experienced the same emotions as the teens.
35. What is Reed W. Larson’s attitude towards the theater program
A. Curious. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Worried.

第五部分 写作
Dear Jack,
I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble balancing your study and hobbies.
I recommend that you make good use of your daily time. It is a good idea to list your daily tasks and finish schoolwork first. Why not set fixed periods for your hobbies instead of spending too much time on them Besides, I think you should review lessons before enjoying your interests. In this way, you can keep a balance between study and hobbies.
I hope you will find my advice useful.
Yours,
Li Hua

Text 1
W: David, Jane has fallen behind in chemistry. Mrs. Green tells me that she seldom asks questions in class and doesn’t join any study groups after class.
M: Don’t worry. I’ll help her go through what she learns in chemistry class every day.
Text 2
M: Hello, Betty. Are you sure that Tom is in the hospital
W: Yes. His sister told me that. She is going to see him this afternoon.
M: The doctor makes a good point. But eating light food helps too.
Text 3
W: You’re still here You’ve been studying almost around the clock. It’s 11:00 p. m. You need to get some sleep.
M: No, just 12 hours. I’ll work for two more hours, and then I’ll go. Good night.
Text 4
W: Mr. Smith, this is Sarah Jones. I’ve got a very bad cold and I’m not going to make it into the office today. I hope you don’t mind.
M: No, that’s no problem. Just take care of yourself.
Text 5
M: Have you seen the new girl in school She’s really pretty. She has lovely light brown eyes.
W: Well, how tall is she
M: She’s about five feet, even taller than me. She is very nice to everyone.
Text 6
W: Our school is setting up a club called “Zero-Waste Creation Lab”. Want to join with me
M: What will we do there
W: We’ll figure out cool ways to reuse waste materials — like making plant containers with bottles or artwork from outdated textbooks.
M: When does the lab meet

Text 7
M: I really can’t stand the rules of smoking.
W: If you want to smoke, you may smoke in private, not in public places. After all, now we are in a meeting room.

W: You needn’t worry about the working plan.
M: It makes me upset and I don’t know how to solve it.

W: Sure. It’ll help, though, to know what your specific needs are and how much you’d like to spend.
M: Well, I plan to use it most when I go on vacation. I have a couple of trips coming up, and I’d like to record my experiences. I’ve never operated video equipment, though, so I’d like something that’s basic.
W: In that case, I’d recommend the Sepler 83. I personally like this one the best because it’s very easy to operate.
Text 9
W: It’s a great honor to make a new statue to stand in the town square.
M: You were chosen because your talent is greatly admired.

M: Why
W: It’s so large that it won’t fit through the door of my studio.

No matter how you are going to learn, you have to make plans. In the first few months, spend some time walking around the university and find out what it is like. Do your best to get used to the life here and get to know your professors and classmates. Trying to understand what our university expects of you will help you to become clear about your own goals. During this time, you have of course to study hard to pass the exams. But what’s more important for you is to put some energy into learning how to learn. Think about what you want from the university and how you can reach your goals. You may have some difficulties in your studies and learning is not always a pleasant journey. Some of you may find your studies are not exciting and are thinking of stopping learning. In this case, just think it over before you make the decision, for learning is so important that it will change your future life. Our university can improve your real learning if you can make up your mind to go through with it. This is what I like to say to you at the moment. If you still have any questions, please come to my office.
Thank you.
