Chinese calligraphy has been treasured as the highest form of art in China for over 3,000 years. It's not just beautiful writing—it carries the spirit and emotions of the writer. There are five main styles:seal script, clerical script, regular script(楷书), running script, and cursive script. Among these, regular script and running script are most widely used today.
Regular script is known for its clear structure and balanced lines. It's often recommended for beginners because it teaches basic brush control. Running script allows more freedom—characters flow like dancing ink, showing the writer's personality.
Wang Xizhi, from the Jin Dynasty, is called the “Sage of Calligraphy”. His work Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion is considered the best example of running script. A famous saying describes good calligraphy, “Like a soaring goose or swimming dragon” (鸿飞兽骇,鸾舞蛇惊), meaning the characters should be full of life and movement.
True calligraphy masters follow three key principles (原则):proper brush technique, correct ink density, and harmonious composition. More importantly, they believe “The heart leads the brush”—your inner feelings should guide your writing.

Once, the Palace Museum in Beijing showed the classical painting A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains. Gui Haowen went to see it. While listening to the guide carefully, she learned a lot about this great painting. “I took a few photos with my phone, but they couldn't show its beauty,” said Gui, a student at Tsinghua University. Hoping to show the beauty of our culture to the world one day, she bought a camera, and her journey into cultural relics(文物) photography began.
However, Gui soon found that photographing in museums was not easy. Museums use dim lighting to protect the relics. As a result, she learned to use the environment. For example, while taking pictures of a lacquerware (漆器) relic, she took a photo from below with a museum light in the photo. The light looked like a glowing moon. “I wanted to recreate the image of ‘drinking with the moon' in Chinese poetry,” she said.
Last year, Gui began sharing her photography on some popular apps in China. Her followers always discuss her photography and share their ideas with each other on the apps. “This leads to growing confidence in our own culture,” she said. In the future, she will influence more people by making good use of social media.

十、 I went to the city exhibition hall with my friend Tom yesterday. There was a traditional Chinese art exhibition.
We saw many amazing works. The paper cutting works were full of creativity—each piece told an interesting story, like folk tales or historical events. The shadow puppet works impressed us most. They could act out wonderful operas, and the way they moved made the stories come alive. The Chinese calligraphy works showed how beautiful Chinese characters could be, with different styles from ancient masters. As for Chinese paintings, they used simple ink and brushes to create peaceful mountains and rivers, making me feel the beauty of nature.
What I saw there made me feel much prouder of traditional Chinese art.
