My family had a long-running cycle of growing up poor. Both my mom and dad came from large families with little more than the clothes on their backs. Their parents had also grown up with very little.
When I was five, I showed an interest in machinery. By Grade 3, I was learning to program using the BASIC language. Then, one day in high school, my computer science teacher suggested that I attend a computer camp. He gave me a brochure (小册子), and I excitedly took it home. That excitement quickly disappeared when my mom saw the price of the camp: several hundred dollars. That evening, I went into my room and cried my eyes out.
But a few weeks later, I got a phone call. It was the head of the computer camp telling me I had been admitted. I could hardly believe my ears. At that camp, I met many like-minded kids and learned how to build websites. It lit a fire in me.
Ten years later, I received another call from the camp director. “I’ve found something I think you’ll want to see,” he said, suggesting we meet. When we did, he pulled out a long handwritten letter that my mom had sent when I was 15. She wrote that I was a smart kid. She talked a lot about my early love for machinery and computers. She ended by saying she couldn’t afford the cost of the computer camp and hoped with all her heart that they would still accept me. I broke down crying at once.
Over the years, I continued to learn as much as I could. In 2014, I finally landed a job where I could use all my skills. Now, I’m proud to say that I’ve broken my family’s cycle of living poorly.
And all I want to do now is to sit down with my mom and thank her for everything she has done for me. Without her, I would never have the bright life I have today.

Can you imagine a paralyzed (瘫痪的) patient controlling a power wheelchair with only his thoughts And can you imagine him directing a robotic dog to pick up a food delivery This is not a sci-fi movie scene. It is a huge step forward from Chinese scientists’ recent clinical trials of invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) (侵入式脑机接口).
The patient became paralyzed after a fall in 2022. In June 2025, he got a BCI system. This system was made by the Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology under the CAS. After a few weeks of training, he could control a computer cursor (光标) and a tablet (手写板) without difficulty.
To help the patient interact (互动) with the world better, the researchers added new technologies. They successfully made the BCI system work not only on a 2-D screen but also in the real 3-D world. For example, the patient could use his thoughts to control a wheelchair and a robotic dog instead of just moving a cursor on a computer screen. This was a new step in getting better. It helped the brain’s orders go from a 2-D screen to real, full-bodied 3-D interaction with the world.
An invasive BCI system has two parts: a front-end sensor and a back-end processor. The front-end sensor is a very thin thread. It is only 1/100 as thick as a human hair. 5 to 8 millimeters of it is put into the brain. The back-end processor is as big as a coin. It is placed in a small hollow on the skull (颅骨). Experts say the front-end sensor is like a network cable, connecting the brain to the outside world to send and receive information. The back-end processor turns the brain’s weak signals into computer instructions. In this way, paralyzed patients can use their thoughts to control external devices and live a better daily life.
Brain-computer interface is China’s completely self-developed technology. It has broken the world record in its field. It shows that China has become more powerful in high technology. We believe China will continue to lead the world in technology development.
53.Why does the writer mention the scene at the beginning of the passage
A. To show the purpose of BCI.
B. To lead into the topic of BCI.
C. To explain the patient’s thoughts.
D. To describe a sci-fi movie scene.
54.Which of the following activities is 3-D interaction with the world

A great cultural event took place in Fuzhou, Jiangxi Province. The English-language The Peony Pavilion (牡丹亭) by Tang Xianzu was performed (表演) in China for the first time. At the same time, A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Dream of Nanke were also performed. These plays created a dialogue across time and space and showed the shared human feelings of Tang Xianzu and William Shakespeare (莎士比亚).
Tang Xianzu from China and William Shakespeare from England were great writers during the mid-16th century. Though they never met, their works share many similarities. Their works were about themes like love, life and human spirits, and often used “dreams” in plays to express feelings that still touch people today. This idea was shown clearly at a gala held by CCTV in Fuzhou.
In the drama Tang & Shakespeare, The Peony Pavilion and Romeo and Juliet appeared on the same stage. The performance showed Eastern “pure love” and Western “devoted love”, proving that writers from different cultures can express similar feelings about love and life.
The English-language The Peony Pavilion was successful in bringing Eastern and Western cultures together. However, it also faced a challenge: how to make the special singing and music of Kunqu opera easy to understand for English people To solve this problem, the actors used rhythms (韵律) often found in Shakespeare's plays and mixed Western and Chinese styles in movement, dance and music. With actors from different countries, the performance became a real cultural exchange, not just a translation.
Another exciting part of the event was the “Tang-Shakespeare Legacy: Youth Dialogue”, which brought together young actors from China and the UK. These young artists not only keep traditions alive, but also bring new ideas to classic works. Their work proves that cultural differences are bridges, not barriers (障碍). As we witness the exchange, we are reminded that the influence of Tang and Shakespeare is not limited to their time but lives on in every play, every shared story, and every heart it touches.
57.What do we know about Tang and Shakespeare according to the passage
A. They worked together to write plays.
B. They were writers in different periods.
C. They wrote plays in the same country.
D. They used dreams to express feelings.
58.How did the performers help English speakers enjoy The Peony Pavilion
A. By inviting many famous international actors.
B. By changing the old story into a modern one.
C. By using Western rhythms and mixing art styles.
D. By explaining the play before each performance.
59.Why are young artists important in this cultural event
A. They help make the performance shorter.
B. They bring new life to traditional works.
C. They follow old traditions without change.
D. They decide which plays to be performed.
60.Which idea is best supported by the passage as a whole
A. Chinese artists play an important role in this cultural event.
B. Traditional art should be protected without making changes.
C. Cultural differences lead to misunderstandings without dialogue.
D. Cultural exchange helps classical works connect different cultures.
六、任务型阅读-简答:本大题共1小题,共13分。
61.In March 2026, a warm story from Shenzhen Bao’an Middle School spread widely. A Senior 3 student wrote to the school, asking to remove the bird nests outside the classroom. He and his classmates were busy preparing for the college entrance exam, and the energetic calls of birds from 18:30 to 19:10 every evening broke the peaceful study atmosphere (气氛) they needed deeply.
Instead of simply satisfying the request, the school principal, Yuan Weixing, replied with a public letter. He praised the student’s poetic writing and turned this event into a “life education class”. First, life has its own rhythm (节奏)—birdsong is natural, and learning to coexist (共存) with all living things is necessary for growth. Second, disturbance (干扰) can also be scenery; these bird calls may become a unique youth memory, and life’s resilience (弹性) is exactly cultivated (培养) in dealing with small discomforts. Third, we should learn to live in peace with nature; the nice campus environment is why birds live here.
He made it clear that he understood the students’ feelings but could not remove the nests. He pointed out that the final goal of education is not to make the world adapt to us, but to teach us to get along with it.
To protect birds, the Shenzhen Bay Park administration turned down citizens’ suggestions on two separate cases. Earlier in 2026, when citizens suggested putting in brighter streetlights, the park refused firmly. They said too much artificial light would destroy the ecological balance and influence birds’ living habits. Later, when visitors asked to end the “No Feeding” rule, the administration said no once more. They warned that human food, like bread, is unhealthy for wild birds. It may lead to poor health, weakened survival skills, and broken migration patterns.
These stories tell us that harmony between humans and nature comes from understanding and respect, not from forcing the world to fit our needs.
