On July 23, 2026, Chinese mathematician (数学家) Wang Hong received the Fields Medal, which is known as the “Nobel Prize” in math. This is the first time a Chinese national has received this honor.
Born in 1991 in Guilin, Guangxi, Wang Hong’s love for math began with a puzzle: “There are seven points on a plane (平面). If no three points form a line, how many lines can you draw at most ”
In schools, Wang would study new textbooks by herself. “I was used to asking myself questions and finding answers on my own,” she once said.
In 2007, Wang got into Peking University but missed the math program by a few points and ended up in the School of Earth and Space Sciences. After studying two majors (专业) during her first year, Wang transferred (转入) to math. But college-level math was tough, and most of Wang’s classmates, unlike her, had training in mathematics olympiads (奥数竞赛). Wang started to doubt herself. “I felt like I was always struggling (挣扎),” she told China Science Daily.
Later, Wang tried other things, like architecture. But this only made her return to math. Now, Wang is a professor at New York University and the Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies in France.
Winning the Fields Medal has made Wang famous. But Wang credits (归功) her success to teamwork and luck. “What I’ve learned is that as long as you reach your goal, it doesn’t matter how long it takes. Others might be quicker, and you might take your time, but that’s perfectly fine,” she said.

A.We need to try our best to win Fields Medal, the “Nobel Prize” in math.

C.If we don’t have training in mathematics olympiads, we will not succeed.
D.Puzzles get us interested, and we can ask and answer questions by ourselves.
30.What happened to Wang Hong when she entered Peking University
A.She began to major in math program as soon as she entered Peking University.

C.She had training in mathematics olympiads.
D.She doubted herself because she didn’t do well in Earth and Space Sciences.
31.What does Wang Hong’s words in the last paragraph mean
A.All the slow people can succeed.
B.Success is about being the fastest.
C.If others are quicker, you should take your time.
D.Sticking to the goal is more important than speed.
32.Which of the following words can best describe Wang Hong according to her experience

Culture plays an important role in our ideas and habits of money. Whether we spend, save, borrow or lend money, our culture influences our choices. People from different cultural backgrounds have their own money-related habits, and these differences are easy to understand.
People in different countries have different ways of talking about money. Some people are unwilling to share their personal financial information with others. They seldom talk about how much they earn or how they spend their money. However, most Chinese people are willing to discuss earnings, house prices, savings and spending habits with close friends. By contrast, British people may talk about their daily spending, but they almost never share their earnings or savings with others.
People also have different payment habits. Although cards and mobile payment apps bring us great convenience, some cultures still prefer using cash. For example, Germans pay with cash for 80 percent of their shopping. They believe touching real money can make them clearly realize how much they are spending.
Saving habits also change from country to country. On average (平均), Chinese people save about 37% of their income. Spanish families only save 1.75%. Mexican families save 15%, while Russian families save nearly 8%.
Besides, gift-giving and pocket money cultures show cultural differences too. Most people will remove the price tag (标签) before giving a gift. But in China, for gifts like gold jewellery (黄金珠宝), it is common to keep the price tag. What’s more, some Chinese parents give kids pocket money for doing housework. In the UK, teenagers often take part-time jobs to learn to manage their own money.
It is interesting to learn about these cultural differences. No habit is right or wrong. We should respect different money cultures when we meet people from other countries.
33.What do British people hardly share with others
A.Their earnings and savings. B.Their daily shopping experiences.
C.Their ideas about gift-giving. D.Their ways of making payments.
34.When do most people remove the price tag of a gift
A.While choosing the gift. B.After receiving the gift.
C.Before giving the gift. D.When packing the gift.
35.Which country has the lowest average saving rate according to the passage
A.China. B.Russia. C.Mexico. D.Spain.
36.What can we infer from the passage
A.People from different cultures will never change their money habits.
B.Cultural differences exist in many small aspects of people’s daily life.
C.Using cash is a better way of payment than mobile payment.
D.Chinese people always show the price tags on every gift they send.

Easter Island is a small island in the Pacific Ocean. It is famous for its moai—nearly 900 huge stone statues, each with a big head and a long nose. The heaviest one weighs about 80 tonnes (吨), and the tallest is about 10 metres high.
Who made them, and how For centuries, this was one of the world’s greatest mysteries. We now know that they were made by the Rapa Nui people between about 1250 and 1500. The statues were cut from stone in a quarry (采石场) and then “walked” to their places. How could a people without big machines move such heavy stone Experiments suggest that groups of people pulled the statues with strong ropes, rocking them from side to side so that they moved forward like a person walking.
Why did they build them The most popular idea is that the statues were built to honour dead ancestors—they were believed to protect the island and its people. Sadly, as more and more trees were cut down to move the statues, the island lost its forests and life became hard.
Today, the moai still stand on the coast, looking out to the sea. They remind visitors of two lessons: our ancestors could do amazing things with simple tools and strong teamwork, and nature is a treasure we cannot get back once it is gone. The past is passing by, but it is never really gone—it is speaking to us, if we stop and listen.
37.What do we know about the moai
A.There are nearly 900 of them. B.They are made of wood.
C.They are all the same height. D.They were made a hundred years ago.
38.How were the statues probably moved
A.By machines. B.By people pulling and rocking them with ropes.
C.By animals. D.By boats.
39.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 suggest
A.Trees were not important to the islanders. B.Damaging nature can bring trouble to people.
C.The statues should be moved to museums. D.The islanders should have built more statues.
40.What can we learn from the moai
A.Simple tools and teamwork can do amazing things, and nature must be protected.
B.Ancient people were much stronger than us.
C.Stone statues are easy to make.
D.Easter Island is a good place for a holiday.

Sanxingdui is one of the most important archaeological sites in China. 41 Its discovery in the 1920s opened a window into a previously unknown civilization. Since then, archaeologists have uncovered thousands of precious artifacts that continue to challenge our understanding of ancient China.
In May 2026, a team of researchers made a discovery that astonished the academic world. They found a meteoritic iron object in one of the sacrificial pits. 42 It was not made from ordinary iron ore. Instead, it came from a meteorite that struck Earth thousands of years ago. This was the first time such an object had been found in this region.
43 The researchers used pXRF technology to confirm its origin. They discovered that the iron contained high levels of nickel—a metal common in meteorites but rare in Earth’s rocks. This finding proved that the iron did not come from Earth.
The discovery has far-reaching implications. 44 It shows that the people of the ancient Shu Kingdom possessed advanced metalworking skills and could work with materials from beyond our planet. This challenges the traditional view that ancient Chinese civilization was isolated and technologically limited.
“Every new find at Sanxingdui raises as many questions as it answers,” said Dr. Wang, the lead researcher. “That is what makes this site so fascinating. 45 ”
A.It provides concrete evidence of the Shu Kingdom’s technological capabilities.
B.Many experts believe it was a religious center.
C.The discovery was immediately recognised as a major breakthrough.
