If you have ever had to struggle through a lesson after spending half the night on homework, fighting to keep your eyes open, you are not alone. A recent survey of teenagers shows that over 60% get less than eight hours’ sleep on school nights, and nearly 15% sleep fewer than six hours.
What makes sleep so important is that, while you are asleep, your brain is still quietly at work: it sorts through what you have learned during the day and stores it in lasting memory. In one study, students with eight hours’ sleep did much better in a memory test than those who stayed up all night to review. Getting enough sleep also helps you stay focused in class, think faster and keep a good mood. Students who sleep poorly often feel tired or angry more easily, and some even fall asleep at their desks.
If heavy schoolwork is one reason so many teenagers go to bed late, the habits formed around bedtime are very often another. It has become common to lie in bed with a phone, moving from one short video to the next message long after the lights are off. The blue light from screens tells the brain that it is still daytime, so it is harder to fall asleep. Tea, coffee and cola, drunk late in the day, can leave the mind too awake to rest even around midnight.
The encouraging part is that a few small changes are often enough. Doctors have some simple advice. Try to go to bed and get up at about the same time every day, even on weekends. Keep your phone out of the bedroom, or do something relaxing before sleep, such as reading a paper book. When homework truly cannot be completed, an honest talk with the teacher is wiser than staying up late to get it done. A brain that has rested well simply learns faster; sleep, looked at in the right way, is not time lost but time quietly put to work.
29.What percentage of students in the survey get less than six hours’ sleep
A.15 %. B.About 60 %. C.Over 80 %. D.Nearly 100 %.
30.What does the brain do while we are sleeping

Sign language is the main way of communication for deaf people. It’s difficult for them to talk with ordinary people because they can’t hear. Luckily, professional sign language translators bridge the gap between deaf people and the outside world.

Besides, sign language has different “dialects” in different areas. The same meaning can be expressed with different gestures (手势), which brings difficulties to her work. About ten years ago, I went on a trip to Luxor to see the Valley of the Kings (帝王谷), one of the most important tourist sites (景点) in Egypt. I stayed in the town on one side of the Nile River; the Valley of the Kings is on the other side. People usually take a guided tour to the site, but I wanted to go alone.
First, the good things. Adawy, a very nice man near my hotel, lent a donkey (驴) to me. He also gave me directions to the site. I rode slowly to the river and I felt really good in the morning air. I often stopped to take photos — the view was beautiful.
The old walls and tall mountains looked wonderful. I rode past quiet fields and stone buildings. The clean air made me feel great. Everything felt new and exciting. I knew I was visiting a special place all by myself. This trip gave me a happy feeling I would always remember.
I had some problems, though. I made two mistakes. First, it was a very hot day and I only brought one small bottle of water with me — I drank it up quickly in the morning, and I was thirsty all day. The second problem was the sun because I didn’t have a hat. I got terrible sunburn, and felt really hot and tired. After a few hours, I reached the site and took lots of photos. The site was astounding and made me feel great pleasure.
In the end, I enjoyed the experience. True, I didn’t feel very well, but now I have some beautiful photos and memories. I’d love to do it again, but not on a donkey!

If anyone had told me three years ago that I would spend most of my weekends camping, I would have laughed. To me, campers were people who enjoyed insect bites, ill-cooked meals, and uncomfortable sleeping bags. They had nothing in common with me. 41
The friends who introduced me to camping thought it meant living like a pioneer. 42 We slept in a tent, cooked over an open fire, and walked a long way to take showers. This short trip with Mother Nature cost me two days off from work because of a bad stomachache, and the doctor’s bill for my son’s food poisoning (中毒).
Still, I was talked into going on another “fun” holiday in the wild. 43 Instead, we had a camper with comfortable beds and an air conditioner. My nature-loving friends had remembered to bring everything we needed.
44 We have done a lot of camping since then. Recently, we bought a big travel truck with a bathroom and a TV set. There is a separate bedroom and a modern kitchen with a fridge. It even has nice carpet and curtains.
45 I now believe that sooner or later, everyone finds his or her way back to nature. I suggest you find your way in style.
A.This time there was no tent.
B.Things are going to be improved.
C.The trip they took me on was a tough one.
