THE NEW RULE
The UK government will ban(禁止) social media for children under 16. The new rule will start in early 2027. Before making the decision, the government ran a public survey and received about 116,000 replies from parents, teachers and doctors. 90% parents supported the ban, saying that endless online time and harmful information hurt children’s mental health. Under the new rule, platforms (平台) that fail to check users’ ages will face heavy fines (罚款).
WHAT PEOPLE THINK
@Ava, 14, student I don’t think the ban makes sense. I use social media for my school projects and art groups. If big platforms are shut off, many teens will turn to smaller, less safe apps.
@Mr. Reed, father of two I fully support it. My 14-year-old son used to stay up late chatting online, and his grades got worse. Technology companies only care about keeping us glued to our screens.
@Dr. Lee, online safety researcher The rule seems good but carries hidden risks. To prove their age, users may have to share more personal information on the apps.

Was there really a city called Troy For a long time, many people thought it was just a legend (传奇). However, I thought differently. I was born in Germany. My brother Paul and I grew up listening to our father’s stories about the ancient world. I always believed Troy was real — a belief that started in my childhood.
I loved to read, and my favorite book was The Iliad.
“Do brave heroes really fight in front of Troy’s giant walls ” I asked my father.
“It’s only a story, my boy.” he replied.
But I promised myself: one day I would find the lost city.
After finishing school, I did not become a historian. I went into business (买卖) instead, and my work took me around the world.
By my late forties, I had made enough money to follow my dream. I traveled through Greece and Turkey, searching for Troy, until Hissarlik, an ancient site, caught my eyes.
In 1871, I began digging at Hissarlik with local workers. The work was slow, and I was impatient.
“Use the dynamite (炸药)!” I ordered. “We must dig faster!”
The dynamite did speed up the digging, but it also broke many ancient objects.
“Master, look!” a worker shouted.
I rushed over, shaking with excitement. Could this be Troy
Piece by piece, my team uncovered coins, weapons and other ancient objects. Our findings showed that Hissarlik had a history of over 5,000 years and had been rebuilt at least seven times. One of these cities, I believed, was Troy.
The discovery made me famous all over the world. But my decision to use dynamite was a big mistake, as many priceless objects were lost because of my impatience.

On 8 May this year, Sir David Attenborough celebrated his 100th birthday. The natural history expert (专家)and TV presenter has created more than 100 nature films for over 70 years. People are encouraged to take an interest in wildlife and the environment, which makes him a true science superhero.
Attenborough was born in 1926 in England. As a child, he was interested in natural history. He studied Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge and also received 32 degree (学位) from other universities.
In 1952, he first joined the BBC as a beginner. At that time, he had only watched one TV show. Two years later, he developed Zoo Quest about wild animals and it was a huge success. He went on working for the BBC and introduced colour TV to Britain. After working as BBC director of programmes for a while, he went back to making nature films.
During his many years of making nature programmes, Attenborough has had lots of unforgettable moments. In 1978, while filming Life on Earth, he met mountain gorillas. They started playing with him and pulling off his shoes. Another moment was in The Life of Birds, when his team filmed a bird that could copy the sound of a camera taking a photo. He was also lucky enough to see a blue whale, the largest animal on Earth, close-up while filming The Life of Mammals.
Attenborough’s wildlife films have encouraged people around the world to care about the environment and climate change. One person he influenced is wildlife filmmaker Hamza Yassin, who learned English by watching his shows as a child. Scientists also look up to him too, and over 40 new animals and plants have been named after him. To celebrate his 100th birthday, the BBC ran a special week of broadcasting and a live event was also held at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

① “Nothing in the world makes people as sad as money.” A character in Antigone said. But maybe he just didn’t know how to spend it. Research suggests that if we spend wisely, money can, in fact, buy happiness.
② According to a common rule, spending on experiences instead of things makes us happiest. When asked about something they bought, those who talked about experiences like travel were happier than those who talked about things they bought. Psychologists believe we usually go back to how happy we were. This happens faster after buying things than after having experiences. For example, a new table makes us happy for a shorter time than a trip to Chile.
③ Not all experiences are worth the same, however. According to studies, shared experiences bring more happiness than solitary ones. It’s not just doing things that makes us happy—it’s doing things with others. So people who spend on activities by themselves value them no more than things they buy.
④ ▲ . Researchers from the University of Cambridge studied on spending habits, personality, and happiness. They found that the “Big Five” personality traits (特征) can influence how people spend money. For example, outgoing people spend more on restaurants and fun, while careful people spend on fitness and health care. Those whose spending fits their personality are happier.
⑤ But be careful before you spend too much. The cash in your account is more connected with life satisfaction than the money you make. Still, don’t save every penny. When people bought gifts for a sick child instead of themselves, they felt more positive. This was true in both rich and poor countries.
⑥ So, can money buy happiness Maybe the man in Antigone was wrong. If we learn to use our money well, it really can make us happier.
( ) 27.What can we learn from Paragraph 2
A.Things we bought are more important than experiences in life.
B. Spending on experiences makes us happier than buying things.
C. Buying a new table makes people happier than taking a trip.
D. Spending money always makes people feel happy in the end.
( ) 28. What is closest in meaning to the underlined word “solitary” in Paragraph 3
Full of fun. B. Done alone. C. Easy to forget. D. Shared with others.
( ) 29. Which sentence is the best for the blank “ ▲ ”
A. Health always comes first. B. Money can buy everything.
C. Personality also plays a role. D. Spending habits never change.
( ) 30. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To explain how to spend money in a happier way.
B. To describe how to help sick children in poor countries.
C. To prove that the man in Antigone was completely wrong.
D. To show that making more money is the key to happiness.
