Please be advised that many streets in and around the Howard University campus will be closed on Sunday,1 December, from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm as part of the Williams Route 66 Marathon. The city of Smithville has advised us that we should expect traffic problems, especially when runners are likely to be passing our school.Campus Security officers will be on hand to help direct the traffic, but you should expect difficulty entering and exiting the campus. The marathon begins downtown at 7:30 am. More than 11,000 people are expected to attend this event, and a significant traffic jam is expected.Remember that visitors may also be lining the streets to cheer on the competitors,so it’s best to finish any shopping or banking before 9:00.We know that some of you will need to conduct business as usual.Students and employees who park in the apartment parking lots may be able to enter and exit through gates along the main streets that are normally closed during regular hours. You’d better get a map of the marathon course so that you can handle the traffic problems. You may also call their office at 218-155-1292.If you have concerns, please contact us at Campus Security by phone at 218-155-3616,or leave a comment on our website.

A
Dangerous as they are, extreme sports remain appealing among many young people! Camp Extreme is the perfect test of your heart.
Kite Surfing
It’s an exciting mixture of kites, boards and waves. The idea of using a kite to accelerate speed seems like a new challenge:yet the art of kite flying dates back to hundreds of years ago in China when it was a simple flying machine.
Catch a wind and you’re moving up,down and across the surf.“It’s always exciting. You’d jump 5 feet or 35 feet. You never know if you’re going to go up in the air,and your heart is just going boom, boom, boom.”
Coasteering
It is by far the best activity and an event that everyone is still talking about. This is exploring the coastline without worrying about a coastal path or finding a rocky bay blocking your route. You climb, dive and swim from one place to another. With coasteering, you don’t have to be able to swim as the wet suit and buoyancy (浮力) aid will keep you floating when you are in the water.
Sky Diving
Traditional parachuting (跳伞) doesn’t sound risky enough. So now sky diving is the name for jumping from a plane and listening to your heart beating heavily as you move fast towards the Earth before you open your parachute at the last moment.
Mountain Biking
It’s been around so long that bikers are no longer satisfied with just going up and down a mountain.Mountain biking is a sport which consists of riding bicycles off-road,often over rough land, using specially adapted mountain bikes.Mountain bikes share similarities with other bikes, but include features designed to improve strength and performance in rough areas.

D.One’s physical health.

( )23.Which of the following sports can be the most risky

根据画线词前面的“yet the art of kite flying dates back to hundreds of years ago in China”可知,放风筝的技艺可以追溯到几百年前的中国;画线词前面的when引导的是定语从句,即在几百年前,风筝是一种简单的飞行器。 故选A。

I have been playing basketball since I was in the 6th grade.I first started out in the summer before the 6th grade when I played for the Park District Travelling Basketball Team. This is where I first learnt how to play basketball and found out I wasn’t very good at it.This is the main reason why I liked football more than basketball—I was naturally good at football and didn’t have to work as hard. But because of the way I was brought up—always being encouraged to never give up,I kept at it and kept working on my basketball skills so I could be good enough to play for my high school basketball team.I played for my high school basketball team during my junior and senior years of high school.
During those years in high school,I really began to practise hard on improving my basketball skills. My main goal was to get an athletics scholarship to college and get a free education.I indeed achieved this goal and was awarded a two-year basketball scholarship at Parkland Junior College. During those two years,I improved a lot in basketball thanks to my hard work on enhancing my skills.
After having two good seasons on and off the court at Parkland,I graduated. The final step I had in mind was to come to Northern Illinois University and make the basketball team. Many people doubted me and said I wasn’t good enough to make the team, but instead of listening to them, giving up or stopping working hard,I worked harder than ever before over the summer. And all the hard work paid off.I am now a member of the Northern Illinois University Basketball Team.
( )24.What do we know about the author
A.He became what many people had expected him to be.

A.Well begun,half done.
B.Every coin has two sides.
C.Detail is the key to success.

Proper nutrition is crucial for improving athletic performance, supporting recovery, and overall health. Now,a new study from the University of South Australia (UniSA) reveals that it is also key to reducing the risk of injury, especially for females.
A systematic review of nearly 6,000 adult distance runners explored the link between diet and exercise-related injuries. It found that female runners with lower energy and fat intakes faced higher injury risks. These women consumed 450 fewer calories and 20g less fat daily than their uninjured peers (同龄人).Additionally, the study found that a low-fibre diet increased the likelihood of bone stress injuries in runners of both sexes.Injured runners consumed three grams less fibre per day than those who remained injury-free.Interestingly,runners’ intakes of protein, alcohol, and calcium (钙) did not influence injury risk.
Sports dietitian and UniSA researcher,Erin Colebatch, emphasises that nutrition plays a crucial role in reducing injury risk.“Distance running is a popular activity for many people, helping them stay healthy.Yet about 50% of adult runners sustain running-related injuries,” Colebatch says. “Nutrition is key to improving athletic performance, providing the energy, recovery support, and injury prevention required for maintaining both endurance and overall health. Many long-distance runners underestimate their energy needs. When they don’t fuel their bodies properly, they increase their injury risk.Recognising the impact of diet on injury risk helps reduce it.”
Senior researcher,UniSA’s Dr Alison Hill, adds that clinicians need to support female runners to achieve sufficient energy and fat intakes while guiding all runners to improve their fibre consumption.“When runners don’t consume enough energy, their bodies’ needs go unmet, which over time can lead to issues like loss of lean body mass, tiredness, and bone breaks,” Dr Hill says.“While this research offers valuable insights for runners of all levels, additional studies are necessary to explore how these findings apply to a broader range of athletic abilities.”
( )28.What does the study find according to Paragraph 2
A.Protein impacts injury possibility.
B.Calcium lessens injury probability.
C.Limited energy harms male runners.
D.Low fat intake is risky for female runners.
( )29.What can we infer about running with less energy from Erin Colebatch’s words
A.It boosts athletic performance.
B.It raises the injury likelihood.
C.It improves energy recovery.
D.It reduces diet-injury link.
( )30.What will the follow-up study focus on
A.Supporting female runners’ diets.
B.Guiding ways of fibre consumption.
C.Increasing energy intake levels.
D.Applying findings to more athletes.
( )31.Which column of a newspaper is the passage probably taken from
A.Entertainment. B.Fashion.
C.Wellness. D.Culture.
根据第三段Erin Colebatch的话“When they don’t fuel their bodies properly,they increase their injury risk.”

Many reports say that sports help young people stay out of trouble. If a young person plays sports,he or she is less likely to get into trouble. This is because sports teach people about rules. They also teach people that if they work hard, they might succeed.
Another good way of sports is that they make people leave their houses. These days,a lot of people spend too much time watching television and surfing the Internet. When you play sports, you go outside and exercise in the sun.You take in fresh air.All of these things are important.
You’re probably not going to become a sports professional, but that doesn’t matter.Sports will help you become a better and happier person.Sports will help you make friends and stay healthy. Here is another good reason to play sports: sports are fun.

Hiking keeps your mind sharper than many other forms of exercise. As a professional writer, although I’m busy with my work,I often spare some time to hike.37.
38. Exercise in general can be a good way to decrease stress. But what sets hiking apart from other forms of exercise is that it’s done outdoors in a natural setting. It can happen almost anywhere and give you the happiness that you can take from nature.
Hiking can increase our creativity.I’m sure I’m not alone in finding that walks in nature let my mind wander freely in creative directions.39. Sometimes, ideas relevant to music come up from unconscious places when I’m not deliberately thinking.
Hiking helps strengthen a positive relationship with the natural world.Besides being good for us,hiking may also help the world around us.After all,if we stick to walking and covering longer distances,we could use cars less and reduce our carbon footprint.
40. For example,it increases our connection to nature. As one study suggests, when we have a personal connection to nature,we are more likely to want to protect it.That means experiences in nature—like hiking—can be beneficial to both people and the Earth.
So,grab a water bottle,a backpack ... and head out on the trail. You won’t be sorry you did.

B.Personally,it’s easy to hit upon some creative ideas while at home alone.

When Sam and I were first married,we lived in a quiet neighbourhood.Across the street, there was a big house with a six-foot high hedge (树篱) that blocked all but a small path to its yard.It was clear that our neighbours wanted privacy (隐私) and weren’t interested in any “neighbourly” behaviour.
Sam had discovered that a brother and a sister lived in the house. The house belonged to the sister, and the brother helped around the house with things like getting the mail and setting the rubbish cans out on the day when the rubbish-collecting truck would come. The sister and the brother were both very old.And we considered them unfriendly because they had called the police when Sam played music with his band in our yard one afternoon.
Not realising it was we who were in the wrong,we thought our neighbours caused trouble to our already difficult life.At the time,Sam and I were quite short of money. We felt sad when Christmas was around the corner. It was our first Christmas as a married couple, and we didn’t have much money to celebrate it.There were no gifts or parties. We didn’t even have any special holiday treats to share at home.
“I wish we could have enough good stuff on Christmas Day.When I was a kid,my family would always have cheese, meat, cookies, candies, etc. It always felt like a feast (盛宴) to me as a kid,” I told Sam.I understood that Christmas wasn’t all about nice things, but it just didn’t feel like Christmas with only a few foods.Sam seemed to feel the same way.“Things will get a lot better next year,” he said, trying to be cheerful.
Three weeks before Christmas,we got to know our “unfriendly” neighbour, the brother, had a bad disease and passed away. One morning after that,we noticed our neighbour—the tiny sister Mary—trying with all her strength to pull her rubbish cans to the roadside alone. She looked so weak and lonely.

Sam couldn’t stand it and rushed to her, saying,“May I help you ”

B.Calcium lessens injury probability.
C.Limited energy harms male runners.
D.Low fat intake is risky for female runners.

B.Fashion.

A lot of people play sports, but very few people become sports professionals. If sports aren’t going to be your future, then why should you play them Why should you train every day Why should you work hard and feel sore (酸痛) the next day Wouldn’t it be better to forget about sports and focus only on your studies
There are actually a lot of good reasons to play sports.First of all, sports are a great way to exercise.Exercising keeps you healthy and strong. It also helps you stay in a good state. When you exercise, your body produces endorphins (内啡肽).Endorphins give you more energy and make you feel happier.
Sports are important for everyone, but they are especially important for young people.Sports teach young people about winning and losing. Also, they teach young people how to communicate and work as a team. For example, when you play football, you must learn how to communicate with your teammates and work together.Sports teach young people to respect their coaches, teammates, and people they fight against as well.

I’m a hiker—“born to hike”.It does my heart and soul good to take a pack and head out on a trail, especially when I’m alone and can let my mind wander where it will. The experience of hiking is unique, research suggests, conveying benefits beyond what you get from typical exercise. 36.

Paragraph 1:
Sam couldn’t stand it and rushed to her, saying,“May I help you ”
Paragraph 2:
When we answered the door, there was nobody but a big bag of goods.
