Where else can you find plastic in your daily life
What problems can plastic cause
Plastic can be environmental waste. It can put animals on land and in the ocean in danger. It does not break down easily, and it can also cause air pollution when people burn it.
Think and answer. Use the words and expressions to help you.
Read the passage and find out whether plastic has made life better or worse.
Plastic has made life both better and worse. It makes life easier because it is light, cheap, useful and convenient. But it has also made life worse because plastic waste harms animals, pollutes the land and oceans, and even affects human health.
Divide the passage into three parts and match them with their subheadings.
A. Call for wise action
B. Plastic’s advantages in the past
C. Environmental problems caused by plastic
Para 1
Paras 2–4
Para 5
1. Why was plastic considered an amazing material
Read Paragraph 1 and answer the questions.
Because it was light, easy to shape, long-lasting and cheap.
2. How did some people see plastic back then
They saw it as an “environmental hero”.
1. How does plastic harm sea animals
Some animals, such as whales, eat it by mistake and die.
2. How serious are the problems caused by plastic in the oceans
It kills more than 100,000 sea animals every year. By 2050, there could be even more plastic than fish in the sea by weight.
Read Paragraph 2 and answer the questions.
Read Paragraph 3 and complete the table.
How plastic harms them
Birds
Bears
Cows
Humans
Birds’ wings get tied in plastic lines.
Bears’ heads get stuck in plastic bins.
Cows mistake plastic bags for food.
Humans eat five grams of plastic a week on average.
Read Paragraph 3 and answer the question.
Can you find more clues that show plastic is everywhere
Tiny pieces of plastic are found in the air we breathe. They can be carried around by the wind. There is even plastic “snow” at the North and South Poles.
Read Paragraph 4 and answer the question.
Why is it hard to deal with plastic waste
Because it may take hundreds of years to break down. Hiding the waste in the ground doesn’t solve the problem. Burning it causes air pollution.
What does “With no Planet B to turn to” mean in the text
It means that the earth is our only home, and we must protect it.
Read Paragraph 5 and answer the question.

Plastic: good or bad
Benefits of plastic in the past
Environmental problems caused by plastic

Problem 2: Plastic is causing problems on land.
Problem 3: Plastic waste is hard to deal with.
Conclusion:
We must think clearly and use plastic wisely.
1. Which problem of plastic do you find most shocking Why
The problem I find most shocking is that humans are eating plastic waste. Because plastic is even in the air and food, and it can affect our health.
The problem I find most shocking is that ...
2. Do you think humans will ever stop using plastic Why or why not
To think about the future of plastic, you should consider things like environmental problems, new technologies and how people feel about plastic.
Learning to think
Yes, I think humans may stop using plastic in the future. Because plastic causes many environmental problems. People may use more natural or greener materials instead of plastic.
No, I don’t think humans will ever stop using plastic. Because plastic is very useful in daily life. We use it in many things, so it is hard to stop using it completely. But we should use less plastic and use it wisely.
1 Plastic makes our life very convenient. Do you think it is possible to completely stop using plastic Why or why not If not, what should we do
No, it's impossible to completely stop using plastic.
Reason 1: Plastic is very useful. We use it in hospitals, cars, and many other important things. We can't live without it.
Reason 2: It is cheap and light. There are no good substitutes (替 代品) for everything yet.
If not, what should we do
Reduce (减少): We should say "no" to single-use plastic bags and straws. Bring our own cloth bags.
Reuse (重复使用): Use plastic bottles or boxes again instead of throwing them away.
Recycle (回收): Put plastic waste into the right recycling bins.
Develop new materials: Scientists should invent things that can break down (降解) easily, like paper straws or biodegradable (可生物降解的) bags.
2 The last sentence says, "Our choices today change the world tomorrow." Can you share one specific choice or action you are willing to make in your daily life to reduce plastic waste
Carry a reusable water bottle and coffee cup instead of buying bottled water.
Say “no” to plastic straws and plastic bags when shopping.
Use bamboo toothbrushes or solid shampoo bars.
Separate plastic waste properly for recycling.
I can
