A wooden (木质的) clock at this year’s Labour Creates Beauty Show shocked everyone. It was made by Li Xiaoyu, a 15-year-old student from Nanjing, who spent 126 hours over 3 months building a wooden clock totally by hand.
At Li’s school, every student must complete 100 hours of hands-on work before graduating. Li chose clock-making because her grandfather used to fix watches. “It wasn’t easy,” Li said, showing her rough (粗糙的) hands. “The moving parts didn’t work at first. I failed 18 times before they finally moved smoothly.”
Making the clock needs very careful work. Every wooden piece has to fit exactly—even a small mistake could stop the clock from working. “At first, I thought labour just meant simple tasks like doing housework,” Li said. “Now I know real craftsmanship (工匠精神) takes time, smart thinking, and never giving up.”
Chinese schools now teach three key ideas in labour classes:
* Working hard (getting your clothes dirty means you’re trying)
* Being exact (paying attention to every detail)
* Creating new things (like Li’s clock that runs on sunlight)
“The students learn more than just skills,” said Teacher Chen. “” Last year, most parents said their children became better at solving problems after doing these projects.
Making the clock shows traditional skills still have value even in the modern world of machines. With hard work and patience, you can create wonderful things with your own hands.
10. Why did Li Xiaoyu choose to make a clock
A. Because it needed very careful work. B. Because the school asked her to do so.
C. Because her grandfather used to fix watches.
11. Which “exactly” in the following sentences has the same meaning as the underlined word in Paragraph 3
A. Exactly what are you trying to tell me B. This was not exactly what I wanted to hear.
C. Every part of the model must fit exactly before you finish it.
12. Which of the following can be put in “________”
A. They learn to be better people. B. They learn many useful living skills.
C. They get much help from their parents.
13. What is the best title for the text
A. Labour Classes in Chinese Schools B. A Student’s Special Hand-made Clock
C. The Real Craftsmanship

In Enhe—China’s only Russian ethnic (民族的) township—Wang Xiufen’s cafe stands out with its warm, wooden design. Inside, bright wall hangings and soft wool decorations (装饰品) fill the space. Wang, a master of Russian cloth-making skills, sees her cafe as more than a business. “Making cloth by hand was dying out because young people weren’t interested,” she says. “But now, they visit for coffee, take photos of my colorful designs, and want to learn how to make them!”
Fu Yanmei runs a bread shop famous for lieba (Russian-style bread). Years ago, she started a DIY program where visitors shape their own bread. This change made her bakery popular. Fu doesn’t stop there. She shares the bread’s 200-year history and explains how it’s made with natural materials. “Most learners are teens,” she says. “Creating their own bread makes them cheerful and curious about our culture.”
Near the Greater Khingan Mountains, the Oroqen people—one of China’s smallest ethnic groups—are also innovating (创新). Meng Shuling creates modern products like fridge magnets (磁铁) and earrings from a special local plant in traditional ways. “The old ways can’t stay locked in the past,” she says.
Government and universities are supporting these efforts. Since 2023, a program has helped students design digital art, fashion, and toys encouraged by traditional styles. Over 300 creative works, such as cartoon characters wearing ethnic designs, have been made.
By mixing tradition with fun activities, technology, and daily life, young people are rediscovering the beauty of their culture. As Meng says, “When tradition becomes part of your world, it never disappears.”
14. What do young people do at Wang Xiufen’s cafe now
A. They sell coffee and design new bread. B. They take photos and learn cloth-making.
C. They buy wool decorations for their homes.
15. What do you think of Fu Yanmei and Meng Shuling according to the text
A. Strict. B. Quiet. C. Creative.
16. Why does the government support these programs
A. To make money by selling more traditional products.
B. To let students know about some traditional art forms.
C. To help young people learn culture in new and fun ways.
17. What will the text probably talk about next
A. Why old traditions will disappear. B. How to run a popular coffee shop.
C. More creative works about traditional culture.

It was my 14th birthday. I had hoped for a new smartphone, but my parents gave me something different—a piggy bank and a notebook. My father smiled and said, “This is a start to your financial journey. We want you to learn how to look after money.”
My mother added, “If you save 20 yuan every week, by the end of the year, you’ll have enough to buy the smartphone you want.”
I decided to try. Every week, I saved 20 yuan from my 50 yuan pocket money. I wrote down everything I bought: a pen for 3 yuan, a snack for 2 yuan, and so on. After three months, I had saved 240 yuan. I felt a sense of achievement. I also found that I didn’t waste money on unnecessary things anymore.
On the last day of the year, I counted my money: 960 yuan! It was almost enough for the smartphone. My parents were very proud of me. They matched my savings with an extra 40 yuan, and I finally bought my dream phone. But more importantly, I learnt the value of saving and managing money. Now, I still keep a spending diary and make a budget every month.

书面表达范文:
Dear Mary,
I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble managing your pocket money. It is quite common for teenagers, so don’t be too upset.
Here are some useful suggestions for you. First, you can make a spending notebook and write down every thing you buy. It helps you see your waste clearly. Second, try saving some money first before spending. You can prepare a dream jar and put some money into it every time you get pocket money. I have kept this habit for a long time and it works well for me.
I believe you can learn to control your spending well if you keep trying.
Yours,
Li Hua
