Last summer, 14-year-old Jake joined a beach cleanup volunteer program in his town. He went there, thinking he would only spend a few hours picking up trash and then go home.
On his first day at the beach, Jake and other volunteers saw a small sea turtle tangled in plastic netting. The turtle could not move and looked helpless. Working gently and carefully, they slowly cut the netting away and set it free. When the turtle swam back into the clear water, Jake felt a strong sense of purpose. He realized that his small actions could truly help living things in nature and make a real difference.
After that, Jake returned to the beach every weekend without delay. He invited his friends to join him and organized regular clean-up events for the whole community. He also gave small talks at school to teach other students about the harm of ocean pollution. Later, he started an environmental club at school to encourage more teenagers to care for the sea and protect wildlife.
By the end of the summer, Jake and his club members had cleared more than 500 pounds of rubbish from the beach. Local people and officials were greatly moved by their efforts. The government even built a new recycling center near the beach to reduce waste from reaching the ocean.

I can well remember the pain. My stomach was sick, my heart hurt, and my eyes painful from holding back tears.
“You know, Annie,” my friend John said, “Joanna and Andrea were just talking about you.” I immediately got nervous. “They said that the only reason you start on the basketball team is because the coach likes you. It’s not because you’re good.” I thought I might be sick. “They said they’re tired of you always getting what you want.” I struggled to keep myself from crying, sinking to my knees on the cold floor. After John told me everything my supposed best friends said about me, I was hurt.
Joanna and Andrea came in from lunch break acting as if nothing had happened. Joanna was still my deskmate, and Andrea was still my partner for our history project. I was amazed at their ability to pretend we had perfect friendship, especially since they’d said such hurtful things.
I was a freshman in high school, and I felt like I didn’t have a friend in the world, all because of Gossip — informal talk or stories about other people’s private lives, perhaps unkind or not true.
The tongue can be our worst enemy. Gossip harms confidence and separates close friends. It’s like a sharp knife, cutting one’s self-respect into pieces. When we say unkind things about others, we’re sticking knives into their hearts.
So how was I to act next When Joanna and Andrea pretended our friendship hadn’t changed, I thought of attacking them back. But instead, I told them directly that they had hurt me. Joanna started crying and Andrea was speechless. I knew they were both sorry for what they had said. They apologized, and I forgave them. Sure, things were a little uncomfortable at first, but soon enough everything was back to the way it had been before.
I still deal with gossip, sometimes as a receiver and sometimes as a sharer. But the more I learn about love, the more I realize the importance of encouraging others — something gossip never does.
29. What can we conclude from the second paragraph
A. Joanna and Andrea were grateful that the writer was their friend.
B. Joanna and Andrea made fun of the writer’s basketball performances.
C. Joanna and Andrea were unhappy about the writer being on the team.
D. Joanna and Andrea did not think the writer was the coach’s favourite.
30. How did the writer respond to her friends’comments about her
A. She decided to fight back immediately. B. She told them frankly how she felt.
C. She found it awkward to speak to them. D. She pretended that nothing had happened.
31. What is the writer’s reaction to gossip
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Unconcerned. D. Unclear.
32. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Gossip is definitely a sticking knife into people’s hearts.
B. We have to be patient when people gossip about our friends.
C. We can’t escape the world with gossip, but love offers a guiding hand.
D. We should be careful around our friends since they may cheat us sometimes.

What did Steve Jobs, Michael Jackson, and Leonardo da Vinci have in common Talent aside, they were all perfectionists. The same can probably be said about Madonna, Serena Williams, and Gordon Ramsay. Whether in the arts, science, or business, exceptional achievers rarely rely on their talent alone. They also devote themselves fully — and even obsessively — to quality. As the German-American poet Charles Bukowski once said, “Find what you love, and let it kill you.”
Psychologists have studied perfectionism for decades, detailing its role in amazing creative feats as well as its destructive qualities. In fact, few other personality traits illustrate the thin line between normality and abnormality better than perfectionism.
Although definitions vary, its central characteristic is an outsized concern about making mistakes. As a result, perfectionists are driven by their fear of failure, and it is this fear that drives them to strive for flawless work. It is what psychologists term an adaptive manifestation of impostor syndrome (冒名顶替综合征): Because you think you are not as good as you actually are, you invest a great deal of energy and time into trying to become better. These efforts may help maintain a sense of accomplishment while delaying the effects of burnout.
Perfectionism does not always result in tremendous artistic and intellectual achievements though. When it is not coupled with great ability, resilience, or work ethic (勤于工作的态度), it can lead to procrastination (拖延症) and other serious problems, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and even premature death. In other words, bad perfectionism can cause you to stress yourself into an early grave.
Perfectionism also affects other people in good and bad ways. Friends and family can suffer from perfectionists’ devotion to their work and careers. On the other hand, when perfectionists deliver greatness, they create value for the wider society, inspire others to raise their own standards, and contribute to innovation in their fields. This makes perfectionism, like most personality traits, too much or too little can be harmful, but having just the right amount of it can be a huge advantage.
In an age where so much expert advice is focused on helping people combat work-related stress and burnout, it is useful to remember that pretty much all exceptional achievers are workaholics (工作狂) and that some of the most significant progress we’ve achieved as a society has been owed to them, rather than those with great time-management skills and a healthy work-life balance. So while it may sound selfish, humanity would probably lose a great deal by finding the cure for perfectionism.
33. The celebrity examples the author cited in Paragraph 1 were meant to show that perfectionists .
A. have their own problems B. are active in all walks of life
C. make the best of their talent D. try to produce the best work
34. According to the article, perfectionism is a tricky personality trait mainly because perfectionists are .
A. too self-centred B. driven by their fear of failure
C. not as good as other people think D. poor at keeping a healthy work-life balance
35. The author’s attitude towards perfectionism was .
