Are you aged between 13 and 19 years old Do you care about your local environment Would you like to help make the area you live in cleaner, safer and friendlier If your answers are “yes”, then read on! Here are a few easy things you could do to get started.
Neighbourhood watch
Neighbourhood watch forms are very popular in the UK. If you go away on holiday and leave your house, it’s very nice to know that a neighbour is keeping an eye on it. It’s a good way to make the area you live in safer.
Lending a hand
There are often elderly people living in the neighbourhood who may not be able to do the things that you can. Offer to do their shopping once a week, look after their gardens for them or maybe walk their dogs!
No littering
Nobody likes picking up other people’s rubbish, but a clean street can make all the difference. Take it in turns to go out once or twice a week and see what you can find.
Recycling
Nearly two-thirds of your rubbish can be recycled. Some areas already provide places for people to recycle bottles, plastic and paper. Find out if this is done in your neighbourhood. If it’s not, do something about it.
If you are interested in our project, just tell us! You can email us at help@first.org and we’ll send you more details.

Finally, I got out of bed and took a deep breath, feeling my heart beat quickly. I took my bright backpack, its colors standing out against the room’s simple look. Downstairs, the smell of fresh breakfast rose up. My parents were in the kitchen, their faces lighting up with warm smiles. They showered me with encouragement, and their eyes were full of pride. Breakfast was rushed, but each bite (一口) felt special.
At the school gate, my stomach knotted (紧揪). But as I entered, a lively scene met my eyes. Kids ran everywhere, their laughter filling the air. When I was ten, my family moved to the United States because of my father’s job. I was on edge about going abroad at that time. The biggest reason was English. Since I was moving to rural (乡村的) Kentucky, I had to attend the local elementary school where everyone spoke English — a language I didn’t know at all.
It was a huge challenge, but within a year, I had adjusted (适应) to English and could hold simple conversations. My school had an ESL (English as a Second Language) class for students like me. At first, I only attended ESL, but I soon pushed myself to join regular (普通的) classes with American students. This effort paid off and helped me improve quickly.
After finishing sixth grade, I moved on to middle school and then high school. I continued learning English through daily life with friends and from studying at school. Probably my friends were my best teachers of English at that time. When I returned to Japan for university, I understood that true English learning comes not only from grammar books but also from listening and speaking. Now I am learning it through my ears and mouth. Also, I am enjoying it!
In learning English, people like me are lucky to have a chance to go abroad. It is true that living in America helps a lot with learning English, but I don’t think going abroad means mastering English. What matters more is how much effort you put in and the methods you use. My suggestion I would like to say that when you are learning English, you should enjoy it. Your enjoyment will translate into great progress.

I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.
War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing.
Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart. Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn’t notice Kate had sat up.
She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. Volunteering takes up our time, energy, and sometimes money. It can be hard work. It can find us doing and seeing new things, which can be challenging and even a little scary. So why does anyone even go there
On the one hand, volunteering is good for others. The world is not a perfect place, and many people, animals, places, and communities need help. Governments and professionals try to meet everyone’s needs, but it’s impossible for them to do it all. This is why people become volunteers: they can make a difference where someone or something needs help. If people never help each other and only care about themselves, the world becomes a crueler, sadder place. But when we volunteer our time, money or talents, we help to make our planet a better, happier home where people cooperate to make life easier for all.
Actually, volunteers and volunteer groups can do many things. They can bring food to hungry people; they can find homes or clothes for those who need them; they can protect wildlife and natural areas; they can bring comfort and happiness to lonely people; and they can help people learn to read or do better in school.
On the other hand, volunteering is good for you. Are you thinking, “What’s in it for me ” The answer is, plenty! Here are some of the things you might get in return for your giving. You may make new friends; you may gain important skills and experience that will help you later in life; you may make connections that can lead to a job or career; you may have fun. And most importantly, you may feel like you are part of a community!
Hey… it looks like being a volunteer gives as much good stuff to you as it does to the people, places, or animals you’re trying to help That’s the secret of volunteering. People who become volunteers usually lead richer, happier, and more satisfying lives than those who don’t volunteer.

(no more than 10 words)
57. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “cooperate” in Paragraph 2
