For years, divers have reported unusual attacks from sea snakes. This behavior confused scientists because land snakes prefer to avoid humans rather than attack them. Why would their sea cousins be any different Now, a recent study says that sea snakes may not be trying to attack humans at all.
“Attacks on divers by sea snakes are mostly due to males searching for females, and getting confused,” the study author Professor Rick Shine said. “Sea snakes swim directly towards divers, sometimes wrapping coils around the diver’s arms or legs and biting. Sea snakes can grow to be more than six feet long. This makes them particularly frightening for the divers who encounter them. The sea snakes do not bite very often; however, approaches are very common — and dangerous because a diver might panic.”
To understand why sea snakes keep approaching divers, the researchers turned to data collected nearly 30 years ago. As a university student, the study author Tim Lynch made a total of188 dives in the Great Barrier Reef between 1994 and 1995. During these dives, which lasted approximately 30 minutes, he would record the number of sea snakes that approached him and the details of these experiences.
Most of the approaches took place during the snakes’ mating season, and males were more likely to approach during this time. This led the study authors to conclude that the attacks were a case of what they call “mistaken identity”. That is a male sea snake mistaking the diver for a female sea snake.
The explanation provided by Lynch and Shine answers the question of what divers should do if they find a sea snake rapidly swimming their way. “Stay calm, and let the snake check you out,” Shine advises. “It will soon realize that you’ re not a female snake, and go on its way.”

It was 1961 and I was in the fifth grade. My marks in school were miserable and, the thing was, I didn’t know enough to really care. My older brother and I lived with Mom in an ugly multifamily house in Detroit. Every night after supper, we’d lie on Mom’s bed and stare for hours at the TV screen.
But one day Mom changed our world forever. She turned off the TV, sat us down and explained that her sons were going to make something of themselves. “You boys are going to read two books every week and write a report on what you read.”
We moaned (不满,发牢骚) and complained about how unfair it was. Besides, we didn’t have any books in the house other than Mom’s Bible. But she explained that we would go where the books were: “I’ll drive you to the library.”
So pretty soon there were these two peevish (坏脾气的) boys in her Oldsmobile on their way to Detroit Public Library.
The first book I read clear through was Chip the Dam Builder. It was about beavers (河狸). For the first time in my life I was lost in another world. No television program had ever taken me so far away from my surroundings as did this virtue visit to a cold stream in a forest and these animals building a home.
It didn’t dawn on (明白) me at the time, but the experience was quite different from watching TV. There were images forming in my mind instead of before my eyes. And I could return to them again and again with the flip (快速翻动) of a page.
Soon I began to look forward to visiting this quiet sanctuary from my other world. Along the way a funny thing happened: I started to know things. Teachers started to notice it too. I got to the point where I couldn’t wait to get home to my books.
Now my older brother is an engineer and I am chief of pediatric neurosurgery (儿童神经外科). Sometimes I still can’t believe my life’s journey ends up to this position, but I know when the journey began.

D. he realized that books offered him new experience

In college, Spring Break (春假) is usually associated with the beach, parties and sleepless nights, bringing about relaxation, free time and friends. Students who wish to spend their break doing something productive and rewarding, however, may choose to participate in the Alternative Break Program. It places college students in communities both at home and abroad.
The Program allows students to take part in various projects dealing with issues such as literacy (识字), homelessness and the environment. It includes helping kids with their lessons, raising money for families in need and collecting data for environmental research.
The hope is that, by getting themselves involved in different environments, students will have the opportunities and broaden their view. In turn, they will incorporate (融合) their experiences and lessons learned into their own communities. In a word, the program aims to encourage students to be active citizens and engage themselves in making a difference in society.
In the spring of 2006, about 3,600 students in the USA participated in the Alternative Break Program.
Samantha Giacobozzi, now director of the Program, has been on five alternative break trips herself, including trips to New Orleans, India and the Dominican Republic. “I was a student who went on alternative break trips and had my life totally transformed by that experience,” she said. “Every year, we meet many students who have attended the Program. You can see changes in their life that are connected with their alternative break experiences.”
The Program began in 1991. Today, it has become increasingly popular with college students in the United States.
