Green Saturdays at Riverside Library
Are you tired of throwing away things that could still be used Come and join our Green
Saturdays! Every Saturday morning from 9:30 to 11:00, Riverside Library turns its first floor
into a “Repair Café”.
What happens there
· Bring a broken lamp, a torn bag or a bicycle that does not work.
· Volunteers will help you fix it, and teach you how to do it yourself.
· Tools and simple parts are free. You only pay for new parts if they are needed.
· Children under 12 must come with an adult.
Why do we do this
Every year, people in our city throw away about 20,000 tons of small things that could be
repaired. Making one new lamp produces about 5 kg of CO2. Repairing it produces almost none.
What else
At 10:00 every Saturday, there is a 20-minute talk. Last month, Mr Li from the city museum
talked about old bicycles. This month, Ms Wang will show how to turn old clothes into bags.
Come with your family. You will be surprised how much fun a screwdriver can be.

A. tools and all new parts are free
B. children under 12 can come alone
C. repairing a lamp produces much less CO2 than making a new one
D. the talk lasts twenty minutes and starts at 9:30

The Zhaozhou Bridge, also called the Anji Bridge, stands over the Xiao River in Zhaoxian
County, Hebei Province. It was built between 595 and 605 AD during the Sui Dynasty, and it is
the oldest stone arch bridge in the world that is still in use.
Before this bridge was built, people crossed the river by boat, and in summer floods often
took lives. The engineer Li Chun designed a bridge with one large arch. The arch is 37.02
metres wide but only 7.23 metres high — much flatter than the half-circle arches used before.
A flatter arch made the road easier for carts and animals, and it used far fewer stones.
The bridge has four small arches at each end of the main arch. These “open spandrels” do
two jobs. First, they let flood water pass through, so the bridge is not pushed over in heavy
rain. Second, they make the bridge lighter — about 700 tons lighter — so it presses less on
the ground. In the 1,400 years since it was built, the bridge has survived at least eight big
earthquakes and many floods.
The stones of the bridge are joined by iron dovetails, not by mortar. This means the
bridge can move a little when the ground shakes, and then settle back. Engineers today still
study this design.
In 1991, the bridge was named one of the world's twelve great civil engineering
achievements of the ancient world. Every year, thousands of visitors come to walk across it.
Standing on the bridge, you can see the river below and the fields beyond, just as people did
fourteen hundred years ago.
29.(2 分)How old is the Zhaozhou Bridge
A. About 400 years old.
B. About 800 years old.
C. About 1,400 years old.
D. About 2,000 years old.
30.(2 分)Why did Li Chun make the main arch flat
A. To make the road easier for carts and to use fewer stones.
B. To make the bridge look more beautiful than other bridges.
C. To let boats pass under the bridge more easily.
D. To make the bridge strong enough for cars.
31.(2 分)What do the four small arches do
A. They hold the main arch in place during earthquakes.
B. They let flood water pass through and make the bridge lighter.
C. They are used as gates for people to go up the bridge.
D. They make the bridge heavier so that it does not move.

When I was nine, my grandmother's hands were the busiest things I knew. She could fold a
piece of red paper three times, make four small cuts with a pair of scissors, and open it into
a flower.
I wanted to learn. “Too young,” she said. “Your hands will shake.” I kept asking, and
one winter afternoon she finally put a piece of paper in front of me. “Cut a circle,” she
said. I cut. It came out like an egg with a corner.
Grandma did not laugh. She took my paper and cut the same circle again, slowly, turning
the paper and not the scissors. “The paper decides,” she said. “You only follow.”
That winter I cut maybe two hundred circles. Some were still eggs. But one day, without
thinking, I turned the paper and the circle came out round. I ran to show her. She looked at
it for a long time and said, “Now you can learn the flower.”
Years passed. I went to a city school and did not touch scissors for a long time. Last
spring, Grandma was ill and could not see well. She asked me to cut the paper flowers for the
Spring Festival windows, as she had done every year. I sat at her old table and cut. My
circles were round, my flowers were not the same as hers, but they were alive.
She held one up to the light and said something I will not forget: “The paper remembers
your hands.”
Now I keep a small pair of scissors in my bag. When I am worried about an exam, I cut a
circle. It is not useful. It does not solve anything. But for a few minutes, my hands remember
what they can do.
33.(2 分)Why did Grandma say “too young” at first
A. Because she had no paper for the writer.
B. Because she thought the writer's hands would shake.
C. Because she was too busy to teach anybody.
D. Because she wanted the writer to learn at school.
34.(2 分)What did the writer learn from cutting circles
A. To turn the paper instead of the scissors.
B. To cut faster with bigger scissors.
C. To draw an egg before cutting it.
D. To ask others for help when in trouble.
35.(2 分)What does Grandma mean by saying “The paper remembers your hands”
A. The paper is made by hand and keeps its shape.
B. The paper can tell people how old the hands are.
C. Skills learned by practice stay with you for a long time.
D. Old paper is better than new paper for cutting.
36.(2 分)What is the best title for the passage
A. My Grandma's Scissors
B. Two Hundred Circles
C. A Flower in Winter
D. The Paper Remembers

How much sleep do teenagers need Scientists say eight to ten hours. Most middle school
students in China get about seven. Many think they can “catch up” at the weekend. New
research suggests they cannot — at least not for memory.
In one experiment, students learned a list of new words in the evening. Half of them slept
for eight hours; the other half stayed awake until 3 a.m. The next morning, both groups were
tested. The group that slept remembered about 30 percent more words. Brain scans showed why:
while we sleep, the brain replays what we learned during the day and moves it from a
short-term store to a long-term one. Without sleep, the file is never saved.
Sleep also affects attention. A student who sleeps six hours for a week reacts more slowly
than one who has stayed up all night once. This is why a late night before an exam often makes
things worse, not better.
Some tips from the researchers: keep the same bedtime, even at weekends; put the phone in
another room; and do not study in bed — the bed should mean sleep.
“Sleep is not a waste of study time,” one scientist said. “It is part of studying.”
37.(2 分)How many hours of sleep do scientists say teenagers need
A. About six hours.
B. About seven hours.
C. Eight to ten hours.
D. More than twelve hours.
38.(2 分)What happened in the experiment
A. The students who slept remembered more new words.
B. The students who stayed up did better in the test.
C. Both groups remembered the same number of words.
D. Neither group could remember any of the new words.
39.(2 分)What does “the file is never saved” mean in the passage
A. The students forget to save their homework on the computer.
B. Without sleep, what we learn is not kept for long.
C. The brain cannot work when a person is awake.
D. New words are too difficult to remember at night.
40.(2 分)Which of the following is NOT a tip from the researchers
A. Going to bed at the same time every day.
B. Keeping the phone out of the bedroom.
C. Studying in bed before going to sleep.
D. Using the bed only for sleeping.

阅读下面短文,按要求完成 41—45 题。每小题 2 分。
Every Sunday morning, 62-year-old Zhang Guilan walks up a wild part of the Great Wall near
her village with a bag in her hand. She is one of about 300 “Wall keepers” in the area. They
pick up bottles and paper left by visitors, and they stop people from taking bricks home.
“Some bricks are six hundred years old,” she says. “If everyone takes one, the wall
will be gone.”
The wild parts of the wall have no gates, no tickets and no guards. For years, visitors
walked on them freely, and some even drove cars along the top. In 2019, the local government
started a program: villagers who live near the wall are trained and paid a small amount to
look after it. They record cracks and report them, and they teach visitors how to walk on the
wall without damaging it.
Zhang says the work is not easy. In summer the stones are hot; in winter the wind is cold.
But she keeps going. “My grandfather carried stones for the wall,” she says. “I cannot
build it. But I can keep it standing a little longer.”
