Wang Lei grew up in Harbin. Every winter solstice, his family made dumplings together. His grandmother said, “If you don’t eat dumplings, your ears will freeze.”
Last year, Wang Lei moved to Guangzhou for school. His classmate Chen Hao invited him to spend the winter solstice with his family. Wang Lei was happy. He thought he would help make dumplings.

Wang Lei was confused. “But where are the dumplings ”
Chen Hao laughed. “In the south, we eat tangyuan. In the north, you eat dumplings. Different places, different food.”
That evening, Wang Lei sat at the table with Chen Hao’s family. He ate tangyuan for the first time. It was sweet and soft. Chen Hao’s grandmother said, “Eat more. Round food brings good luck.”
Wang Lei thought about his own grandmother in Harbin. She would be making dumplings right now. He missed her. But sitting here, with a different family, eating different food, he felt something familiar: warmth.

The Man Who Planted Trees
In the 1990s, the village of Shiyang in Gansu was losing its land. Every spring, strong winds blew sand across the fields. Crops died. Young people left.
Li Guoming was a farmer. He was not an expert. But he remembered something his grandfather said: “Trees hold the earth.”
Li started planting trees on a piece of sandy land near the village. At first, most of them died. The wind pulled them out. There was not enough water. His neighbors thought he was wasting his time.
But Li kept trying. He learned which trees grew best in dry soil. He carried water from a well two kilometers away. After five years, a small line of trees stood on the sand.
When people saw that the trees survived, they began to help. The village planted more. The government sent experts and saplings. Slowly, the green line grew wider.
Today, over 3,000 mu of land around Shiyang is covered with trees. The sand no longer buries the fields. Some young people have come back to farm.

On the last day of middle school, Ms. Chen asked each student to share one memory. “Anything,” she said. “A moment that mattered.”
Xu Tao’s heart sank. He hated speaking in front of people. He tried to think of a good memory. But nothing came. He had no prizes, no funny stories, no brave moments.
When it was his turn, he stood up slowly. “I don’t have a big memory,” he said. “But I remember the blackboard.”
People looked at him.
“Every day after class, someone erased the blackboard. It was never the same person. Sometimes it was Li Ming. Sometimes Wang Fang. Sometimes the teacher. Nobody asked them to. They just did it.”
He paused. “I used to think I had nothing to give. I’m not smart like Li Ming. I’m not funny like Wang Fang. But one day, I erased the blackboard before anyone else. It was a small thing. But for the first time, I felt like I was part of the class.”
