On a hill 600 feet above the surrounding land,we watch the lines of rain move across the scene, the moon rise over the hills, and the stars appear in the sky.The views invite a long look from a comfortable chair in front of the wooden house.
Every window in our wooden house has a view, and the forest and lakes seldom look the same as the hour before. Each look reminds us where we are.
There is space for our three boys to play outside—to shoot arrows, collect tree seeds, build earth houses and climb trees.
Our kids have learnt the names of the trees, and with the names have come familiarity and appreciation. As they tell all who show even a passing interest, maples (枫树) make the best fighting sticks and white pines are the best climbing trees.
The air is clean and fresh. The water from the well has a pleasant taste, and it is perhaps the healthiest water our kids will ever drink.Though they have one glass of juice a day and the rest is water, they never say anything against that.
The seasons change just outside the door.We watch the maples turn every shade of yellow and red in the fall and note the poplars’ (杨树的) putting out the first green leaves of spring. The rainbow smelt fills the local stream as the ice gradually disappears, and the wood frogs start to sing in pools after being frozen for winter.A family of birds rules our skies and flies over the lake.

Some people think if you are happy, you are blind to reality. But when we research it,happiness actually raises every single business and educational outcome for the brain. How did we miss this Why do we have these social misunderstandings about happiness Because we assumed you were average. When we study people, scientists are often interested in what the average is.
Many people think happiness is genetic. That’s only half the story, because the average person does not fight their genes. When we stop studying the average and begin researching positive outliers—people who are above average for a positive aspect like optimism or intelligence—a wildly different picture appears. Our daily decisions and habits have a huge impact upon both our levels of happiness and success.
Scientifically, happiness is a choice. It is a choice about where your single processor brain will devote its limited resources as you process the world. If you scan for the negative first, your brain really has no resources left over to see the things you are grateful for or the meaning embedded (嵌入) in your work. But if you scan the world for the positive, you start to acquire an amazing advantage.
I wrote the cover story for a famous magazine on “Happiness Leads to Profits”.Based on my published articles and my research,I summarised the conclusion of my researh:The single greatest advantage in the modern economy is a happy and engaged workforce.
A decade of research in the business world proves that happiness raises nearly every business and educational outcome,as well as a number of health and quality-of-life improvements.
( )32.What does the underlined word “this” in the first paragraph refer to
A.The fact that people are happy.
B.The connection between happiness and educational outcome.
C.The fact that people often misunderstand happiness.
D.The fact that most people are average.
( )33.What can we learn from the passage
A.Scientists are only interested in what the average is.
B.You can choose to be happy or not.
C.The average are not happy at all.
D.Our decisions and habits have nothing to do with happiness.
( )34.Why does the writer mention his articles and research
A.To advertise himself.
B.To arouse the readers’ interest.
C.To support his point about happiness.
D.To attract the readers to read his articles.
( )35.What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage
A.To explain what happiness is.
B.To describe the misunderstandings about happiness.
C.To show people the importance of happiness.

I couldn’t forget the way I was frozen in front of the class that day.My teacher,Mr Liu had divided the class into groups to do speeches. Then it was my turn. However,my hands shook so badly that I couldn’t read my notes. My voice became softer and even vanished into silence.Mr Liu kindly ended my speech even though I clearly didn’t finish. He also asked me to stay after class for a moment.
“Betty,I know you are shy,but you worked so hard on this project.I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Mr Liu said,“If I give you another chance until tomorrow,do you think you can find courage ” I nodded, grateful for the chance.I went as quickly as I could to my next class, keeping my head down and hoping the school day would end soon.
When I reached home that afternoon,I could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows.Mum was baking (烘焙).She studied my face as I came into the kitchen.“What’s wrong,Betty ”
With tears in my eyes,I told her the whole story.Mum was silent for a moment with her hands busy with the cake.“Why is it that you can talk to me about anything but you can’t talk to your class ” Mum asked. She set the time right and then said,“Let me show you something.”
I followed her to the bedroom. There she showed me a book filled with pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon (丝带) that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking.I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first—not sure of myself at all.I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”

M:It’s gotten a lot darker since lunchtime. When I woke up,it looked like it was going to be a nice day.
W:My phone says it will get windy soon, and there will be rain tonight.
(Text 3)
M:Do you want to take the flight at 8:00 this morning or the flight at 3:00 this afternoon
W:I don’t want to get up too early,so I prefer the latter one.I believe it will also give me enough time to prepare for tomorrow’s meeting at 9:00 a.m.
(Text 4)
M:Hello,I would like to have two shirts washed in the usual way.How much is it for each shirt
W:$15.
M:Great.I will collect them the day after tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.

M:Glad to hear that.I’m calling for a notice. In order to have a better understanding of our school,we will see a short movie about our school tomorrow.

M:But there are so many, and I can’t find a pattern! For instance, the moon is female and the sun is male.I know those are common in different languages. But a chair is female and hair is male.I think that hair would be considered female!I just don’t get it.
W:It can be very confusing.Don’t let it get you down,Andy. You’re doing well this term. One bad quiz score will hardly affect your grade.Your reading is excellent and so is your writing. You’ll get used to this part of the language soon enough.

W:Yeah. The good thing is that I decided to change my route. My GPS system is so useful! I don’t know how I would get around otherwise.
M:Did you remember Mary’s gift
W:I sure did.I have it right here with me in the car.Is everyone else there already I can’t wait to see her face when she walks in.Do you think she knows
M:Everyone is here.I think we all did a good job at keeping the party a secret unless you arrive after Mary!Hurry up!
W:OK,OK...Just make sure all the lights are off so she doesn’t see anyone.
(Text 9)
M:Can I help you find anything
W:Yes,I’m going on vacation next week, and I need a book to take with me.
M:What do you usually like to read
W:I love classics with strong female characters.I get tired of reading about men all the time.I’m looking for something easy and with a happy ending.I don’t want to think too hard while I’m travelling!
M:Where are you going Sometimes it’s nice to read about the place you’re visiting.
W:England.
M:You might like an author like Jane Austen, who writes with a lot of humour.Or Emily Bront ,another classic author. Her writing is full of emotion. It isn’t terribly enjoyable, but it always has powerful female characters.
W:I love Austen and Bront ,but I didn’t think about mysteries. Are they frightening
M:Not at all.The main story is about solving the crime, rather than the murder.I can suggest a few titles.
W:I hope I have time to finish the book!I’m travelling with my children, and they often interrupt my reading.
M:Let’s look for some books for them, too. We have a wonderful youth section right over here.

A.The fact that people are happy.
B.The connection between happiness and educational outcome.

D.To make the point that happiness promotes business and educational outcome.

The next day I walked to the front of the classroom to give my speech.Seeing the quiet classroom,I couldn’t help but feel nervous again,my mind going blank and my voice trembling .Then I saw the blue ribbon which my mum tied to my wrist .I thought of Mum’s warm cake, her love and her inspiring experience.I took a deep breath and gave my speech with confidence. This time there was no fear any more but a big success and a round of applause.
