Luo Shiyue is a cleaner in Guangzhou. He starts his day at 6 a.m., collecting rubbish (垃圾).
And he throws himself into a world of colors after work.
▲ Instead of taking classes, he taught himself to draw and paint at home. After finishing
junior high school, he started working and had to put down his paintbrush for years. In 2022, he

efforts finally paid off.
This February, Luo painted in public for the first time. He spent two days painting a red
silk-cotton tree on a wall at an underground entrance. People passing by all praised (称赞) it and
this gave him confidence. Later, he signed up for a project to make utility boxes (配电箱) in the
street look more beautiful. He painted many things on the boxes, including flowers and animals.
Many people call Luo a “true city beautician”. Whether collecting rubbish or painting pictures,

You may notice that horses appear in many Chinese idioms (习语). These horse-related sayings
help us know about Chinese culture and ancient wisdom.
“A horse that covers a thousand miles” is perhaps the most famous horse idiom. It describes
someone with great talent or ability. Chinese parents often use this phrase to encourage their
children, hoping they will become “thousand-mile horses” who achieve great things.
“A swift horse needs a good judge of talent” tells us more about this idea. Although talented
people (“swift horses”) may be common, good leaders (“good judges of talent”) who can recognize
talent are rare (稀少的 ). This saying reminds us that having talent is not enough—you need
someone who believes in you and gives you chances.
“Ride a donkey while looking for a horse” describes someone who keeps looking for better
chances while still doing their own work well. Chinese people use this idiom to describe
hard-working people who never stop improving themselves.
“An old horse knows the way” tells us experience makes us wise. Just as an old horse
remembers the safest roads through mountains, experienced (有经验的) people can guide others to
get through difficult situations. This idiom shows that Chinese people respect old people and their
experience.
“A painted horse won’t run” tells us not to care only about looks. No matter how beautifully
you paint a horse, it will never run fast. Similarly, nice promises without real action are useless.
This idiom teaches Chinese people to value real results more than empty words.
19. Who often uses “a thousand-mile horse” to encourage children
A. Chinese parents. B. Talented people. C. Good leaders. D. Wise teachers.
20. What’s the Chinese meaning of “Ride a donkey while looking for a horse”
A. 老马识途 B. 马到成功 C. 骑驴找马 D. 天马行空
21. How does the writer organize the passage

B. By introducing horse idioms and explaining them.
C. By comparing Chinese idioms with Western sayings.
D. By showing different kinds of lovely horses directly.
22. What is the structure of the passage
A. B. C. D.

Most storms bring rain or snow, but some bring sand. A sandstorm is a powerful natural event.
It happens when strong winds lift sand into the air and blow it over long distances.
Sandstorms need certain conditions to develop: dry areas with few plants to hold the soil (土壤)
and strong winds. These storms often begin in deserts, like the Sahara in Africa, known for sending
out much of the world's dust (沙尘). Droughts, along with human activities like cutting down trees,
make it easier for the winds to lift the sand.
Sandstorms start when the wind blows across the ground and pushes larger sand grains. This
causes the sand to roll along the surface, a process called "surface creep". Next, smaller sand grains
move up and down in short jumps, known as "saltation". This helps move most of the sand. When
these smaller grains hit the ground, they send tiny bits of dust into the air. The dust can travel far,
even across oceans.
Sandstorms are harmful. They can quickly cover large areas, making it difficult to see. This
can cause car accidents or make airports close. Breathing in the dust can harm our lungs. It is
important to take measures to protect ourselves from sandstorms and stay safe.
( )23. What do we know about a sandstorm from paragraph 1

Grandfather’s Wooden Bowl
An old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year-old grandson. The old
man’s hands shook, his eyesight was poor, and he walked difficultly.
The family ate together at the table. But the elderly grandfather’s shaky hands and poor sight
made eating difficult. Each meal, he dropped the beans from his spoon onto the floor. And when he
tried to pick them up, the glass of milk spilled(洒) on the table. The son and his wife became angry
because he made a mess.
“We must do something,” the son said one day. “I’ve had enough of the spilled milk, his noisy
eating, and food on the floor.” So, the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. From then
on, the grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed their dinner together. Since he
broke a dish or two, his food had been served in a wooden bowl.
Sometimes, when the family looked at in the old man’s direction, they would see a tear in his
eye as he sat alone. Yet, all he ever received when he dropped something were sharp scoldings (斥
责). His four-year-old grandson watched everything in silence.
One evening before dinner, the father noticed his little boy playing with some pieces of wood
on the floor. “What are you making ” he asked sweetly. “Oh, I’m making little bowls for you and
Mama to eat from when I grow up,” the boy replied and went back to work.
His words touched the parents deeply. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be
done. That evening, the husband took Grandfather’s hand and gently led him back to the family
table.
For the rest of his days, Grandfather ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, the
son and his wife no longer seemed to care about the spilled milk or the food on the floor.
