The art of finding meaning
There were loud cheers as an elderly man walked with difficulty to the stage. A smile lit up his face as he
was given the highest award in translation. It was to praise his work for “building bridges among Chinese-,
English and French-speaking peoples”. At 93, Xu Yuanchong was recognised as one of the greatest translators in
the world.
6
Xu devoted most of his long life to his main goal: sharing Chinese culture with the world. This choice dated
back to his university days. When he was 20, the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression① was in
progress. The US Air Force came to help the Chinese army. Xu, a third-year university student, worked as a
translator for the army. He famously translated the “Three Principles of the People”②. He cleverly borrowed
Abraham Lincoln③’s words “of the people, by the people, for the people” to make the meaning clear. This
eye-opening experience awakened in him the need to build a bridge between different cultures. At that moment,
he made up his mind to work as a translator for life.
Xu’s choice kept him going through a long and productive life. He translated more than 100 classic books,
poems and plays. For Xu, translation was not just about expressing a standard meaning. It should also keep the
beauty of the original language. We can see this in his famous translation of “Fishing in Snow” by the Tang poet
Liu Zongyuan:
From hill to hill no bird in flight,
From path to path no man in sight.
A lonely fisherman afloat,
Is fishing snow in lonely boat.
In his 90s, he still worked until three or four o’clock in the morning. “The best of all ways to make our days
longer is to steal a few hours from the night.” He often said these words and made every day count. At 93, he even
started translating Shakespeare and set a goal of 1,000 words a day.
Xu’s dream of translation lasted until the end of his life. His lifelong effort was just like a line from his
translation of Dream in Peony Pavilion—“Love once begun, will never end”.

A life-changing experience
These days, many people move abroad to study. Most of them find that the experience changes them a lot.
We spoke to Lu from Weihai, Shandong Province, China, about her experience studying in Canada.
Thanks for speaking with us, Lu. Why did you move to Canada
I moved to Canada to study when I was 18. At first, I stayed in Hamilton, which is a port city not far from
Toronto. I studied at a college there in Grade 12. After one year, I then moved to Ontario to study for four years at
university. After graduating, I worked in Canada for five more years before moving back to China. In total, I was
in Canada for 10 years.
Did you settle in quickly when you moved abroad
From the start, it was surprisingly easy to settle in. In Hamilton, I met some other students from China who
could support new students like me. I was really lucky that they could help me.
What differences did you notice at first
Well, there were so many! But one thing that I remember very clearly is the housing. In Hamilton, I stayed
with a homestay family for a whole year. The house was mainly made from wood, and the floorboards① made
loud creaking noises when I walked around. As a result, I had to be really careful at night because just moving
around could wake my homestay family up! I did it a few times, and it was really embarrassing.
Did you use English all the time Was it difficult
9
Yes, I used English every day. At first, I wasn’t very confident when having discussions, and it was quite
difficult to understand everything. But I improved very quickly. Living in an English-speaking country is a great
way to pick up the language naturally. Sometimes the way that Canadians speak is different from what I learned at
school. Over time, I greatly improved my English. However, my teacher helped me a lot.
Do you think you changed as a person after living abroad
Yes, I feel much more confident now. Even though I felt different to other people in Canada, I learned that
these differences are strengths, not weaknesses. I also learned that not everything needs to be familiar for me to
still have a good experience. I also made some great friends in Canada, and I’ll never forget my time there.
