29-year-old Dim Nang Lao is a mother of a six-year-old boy in a mountainous and remote region in
northeastern Cambodia. Like many other parents in her village (who marry and have children at a young age), she
used to have little knowledge about how she should look after her child to ensure(确保) he can grow healthy and
strong and reach his full potential(潜力).
But everything changed when she received Nurturing Care Parenting training from village volunteers.
Nurturing Care Parenting aims to help every child get the best possible start in life, including through healthcare,
early education and play. It also helps parents avoid violence(暴力)or punishment to discipline(管教) their children.
“I learned a lot from Nurturing Care Parenting,” Dim Nang Lao says. “I learned how to care for my child’s
health, nutrition and education. I learned how to talk to him when he is wrong and comfort him when he is sad. I
learned that a child is a white paper. If I hit him, he will learn those actions from me.”
Dim Nang Lao is one of many (who have benefited from the training). According to a local official named
Ang Chenda, the training has reached five villages and has improved the lives of many families. She says she
welcomes the training as many parents in the area did not fully understand what they needed to do to fully support
their children’s needs and development and often spent most of their time earning an income(收入) through farm
work.
“After the training, their understanding of raising young children is far different,” Ang Chenda says. “They are
more aware of the importance of caring for their children. They take their children to the health center for
check-ups, issue birth certificates for their children and send their children to school. They also reduce violence and
use positive discipline instead.”
Dim Nang Lao says she is grateful/thankful for the opportunity to learn about positive parenting and apply it
in her daily life. “I hope that more parents in our country can receive this training and benefit from it as I do,” she
adds.(补充说)

A. What she learned from her son. B. Her son’s change over the time.
C. What she gained from the training. D. The goal of the parenting program.
58 Why is Ang Chenda mentioned in the text
A. To speak highly of Nurturing Care Parenting.
B. To introduce a harmonious parent-child relationship.
C. To show the popularity of the training outside villages.
D. To highlight the positive influence of parenting on kids.
59. What does Dim Nang Lao expect of Nurturing Care Parenting
A. It will train more than parents. B. It will be promoted extensively.
C. It will offer jobs to more parents. D. It will be well received worldwide.

D. To teach parents stricter methods of disciplining their children.

Researchers have spent decades catching and measuring birds in a remote corner of Brazil’s Amazon
rainforest. They started coming here to study diversity(多样性 ) in old-growth forests. They wanted to compare
species living there to those in areas where logging (伐木 ) or roads have broken up the habitat. But a team has
discovered a more subtle change: Birds are shrinking(减少).
Over the past 40 years, dozens of tropical bird species have gotten smaller. Many species have lost about 1 to
2 percent of their average body weight per decade. What’s more, some species have grown longer wings. During
the same time period, the climate has gotten hotter and more variable. Leaner (瘦而结实的), more efficient bodies
may help birds stay cool, the researchers say.
“Climate change isn’t something of the future. It’s happening now,” says Ben Winger. “And,” he adds, it “has
effects we haven’t thought of”. Winger is an ornithologist-something (who studies birds.) He wasn’t part of the new
study. But he has witnessed a similar shrinkage in migratory birds(候鸟 ). Seeing the same patterns in many
different types of birds, including ones (now that don’t migrate), suggests it may be “a more universal
phenomenon(现象),” he says.
Many studies have linked body size and temperature. In colder climates, it pays to be big. A smaller surface
area relative to one’s volume reduces heat loss through the skin. That keeps a body warmer. As the climate warms,
“you’d expect shrinking body sizes to help organisms off-load heat better,” says Vitek Jirinec. He’s an ecologist at
the Integral Ecology Research Center.
Jirinec and his team wanted to see if birds (that stay put待在原地) also have been shrinking. They studied
tropical species (that don’t migrate). They focused on birds in an undisturbed part of the Amazon. (That helps rule
out local human effects, such as logging.) They analyzed data from 1979 to 2019. It came from more than 11,000
individual birds. They represented 77 species. Measurements included body mass and wing length. The researchers
also examined climate data for the region. The study included birds with very different lifestyles. Some lived high
in the trees. Others lived lower, even on the ground. And all species got lighter over time, the researchers found. On
average(平均来说), species lost from about 0.1percent to nearly 2 percent of their body weight each decade. Birds
could be evolving to adapt to climate change. Or their bodies might grow differently in response to warmer
temperatures. Either way, the emerging changes point to the potential harm of human activity, Jirinec says.
61. In writing paragraph 1, the author aims to .
A. introduce the main topic of the passage
B. argue against the idea that climate change affects wildlife
C. summarize the findings of previous research on bird body size
D. provide background information about the study on tropical birds
62. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. Some tropical bird species have grown longer wings in response to climate change.
B. The climate in the Amazon rainforest has remained stable over the past few decades.
C. Researchers have observed no changes in the body size of tropical bird species.
D. The average body weight of tropical bird species has increased over the past 40 years.
63. What does Ben Winger suggest about the observed changes in bird sizes
A. The changes are limited to migratory birds and do not apply to other species.
B. The changes may be a universal phenomenon affecting many types of birds.
C. The changes are unrelated to climate change.
D. The changes are temporary and will reverse as temperatures stabilize.
64. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 5
A. To argue that the shrinking body size of tropical birds is not a significant concern.
B. To argue that human activities like logging have no impact on bird populations.
C. To compare the differences between migratory and non-migratory birds.
D. To present findings on bird size changes and their link to climate change.
65. What could be the best title for the passage
A. Migratory Birds in the Amazon Rainforest
B. The Decline in Body Size of Amazonian Bird Species
C. As the Tropics Warm, Some Birds Are Shrinking
D. The Impact of Logging on Tropical Bird Species
第Ⅲ卷 非选择题(满分 30分)

阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
Born in 1949, Diana Nyad took an early interest in swimming as a sport and was a Florida State High School
swimming champion. Like many young athletes, she had Olympic dreams, but a serious illness prevented her from
competing in the Games. The disappointment didn’t stop her from going forward. Instead, she became interested in
marathon swimming. A brilliant athlete, she was well-conditioned for spending long periods of time in the water.
As a long-distance swimmer, she would compete against herself and the obstacles presented by distance, danger,
cold, and exhaustion.
For ten years Nyad devoted herself to becoming one of the world’s best long-distance swimmers. In 1970, she
swam a ten-mile marathon in Lake Ontario, setting the women’s record for the course. In 1972 she set another
record by swimming 102.5 miles from an island in the Bahamas to the coast of Florida. Then she broke a third
record when swimming around Manhattan Island in 1975.
Nyad attempted to swim the distance between Florida and Cuba in 1978. Though the span (跨度) of water is
less than 100 miles wide, it is difficult and dangerous. After battling the water for two days, she had to give up for
the sake of (为了……起见) her own health and safety. Even so, she impressed the world with her courage and
strong desire to succeed. For Nyad, her strength of purpose(意志) was just as important as reaching Cuba. That is
how she defined(定义) success. It did not matter that her swim came up short; she believed she had touched the
other shore.
When Nyad ended her career as a swimmer, she continued to try new things-travelling the world as a reporter,
writing books and giving public speeches about her life. Diana Nyad works to inspire others, just as she did when
she swam the waters of the world.
66. What dream did Nyad have (no more than 5 words)
67. What kept Nyad from taking part in the Olympic Games (no more than 5 words)
68. What does the underlined word “obstacles” in Paragraph 1 mean (1 word)
