The elephant was lying heavily on its side, fast asleep.A few dogs started barking at it.The elephant woke up in a terrible anger: it chased the dogs into the village where they ran for safety.21世纪教育网
That didn't stop the elephant. It destroyed a dozen houses and injured several people. The villagers were scared and angry. Then someone suggested calling Parbati, the elephant princess.
Parbati Barua's father was a hunter of tigers and an elephant tamer. He taught Parbati to ride an elephant before she could even walk.He also taught her the dangerous art of the elephant round-up -- how to catch wild elephants.
Parbati hasn't always lived in the jungle. After a happy childhood hunting with her father, she was sent to a boarding school in the city. But Parbati never got used to being there and many years later she went back to her old life.“Life in the city is too dull.Catching elephants is an adventure and the excitement lasts for days after the chase,” she says.
But Parbati doesn't catch elephants just for fun.“My work,” she says, “is to rescue man from the elephants, and to keep the elephants safe from man.” And this is exactly what Parbati has been doing for many years.Increasingly, the Indian elephant is angry: for many years, illegal hunters have attacked it and its home in the jungle has been reduced to small pieces of land.It is now fighting back.Whenever wild elephants enter a tea garden or a village, Parbati is called to guide the animals back to the jungle before they can kill.
The work of an elephant tamer also involves love and devotion.A good elephant tamer will spend hours a day singing love songs to a newly captured elephant.“Eventually they grow to love their tamers and never forget them. They are also more loyal than humans,” she said, as she climbed up one of her elephants and sat on the giant, happy animal. An elephant princess indeed!

You may have heard the term “the American Dream”.In 1848, James W.Marshall found gold in California and people began having golden dreams. That 19th century “American Dream" motivated the Gold Rush and gave California its nickname of the “Golden State”.
The American Dream drove not only 1800s gold-rush prospectors(采矿者)but also waves of immigrants throughout that century and the next.People from Europe, and a large number of Chinese, arrived in the US in the 19th century hoping that in America they would find gold in the streets. But most.instead, worked as railroad laborers. They created the oldest Chinatown, in San Francisco, and gave the city a Chinese name “the old gold hill”.
In the 20th century, some critics said that it was no longer possible to become prosperous through determination and hard work.Unfair education for students from poor families and racial discrimination almost made the American Dream a nightmare(噩梦).
Then, in the 1990s, California saw a new wave of dreamers in Silicon Valley.People poured their energy into the Internet. This new chapter of the American Dream attracted many business people and young talents from China and India to form start-ups and seek fortune in America.Better pay, a nice house, and a rising standard of living will always be attractive. However, the new American Dream is no longer just about money. It encourages Americans to consume wisely to protect the environment, improve the quality of life, and promote social justice(正义,公正).
The Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger has become the model of the new American Dream. After years of hard work, he grew from a poor young man from Austria into a super movie star and then a governor. Many people hope his story can save the American Dream and give California a brighter future.

One of my favorite posters says, "Life is a test.It is only a test.Had this been a real life, you would have been instructed where to go and what to do." Whenever I think of this humorous bit of wisdom, it reminds me not to take my life so seriously.
When you look at life and its many challenges as a test, or series of tests, you begin to see each issue you face as an opportunity to grow, a chance to discover more about life.Whether you're being bombarded(攻击) with problems, responsibilities, even insurmountable(不能超越的) difficulties, when looked at as a test, you always have a chance to succeed, in the sense of overcoming what is challenging you.If, on the other hand, you see each new issue you face as a serious battle that must be won in order to survive, you're probably in for(遭遇) a very rocky journey. The only time you're likely to be happy is when everything is working out just right. And we all know how often that happens.
As an experiment, see if you can apply this idea to something you are forced to deal with.Perhaps you have much pressure from your parents or you have a demanding boss.See if you can redefine the issue you face from being a "problem" to being a test.Rather than struggling with your issue, see if there is something you can learn from it.Ask yourself, "Why is this an issue in my life? What would it mean and what would be involved to overcome it? Could I possibly look at this issue any differently? Can I see it as a test of some kind?"
If you give this strategy a try, you may be surprised at your changed responses. It will become far more acceptable to me to accept things as they are.
58.When you begin to look at life as a test, you will find _________. .
A.you are bombarded with problems and responsibilities
B.the result of the test is so good that you are delighted
C.you have many opportunities to grow
D.you have to go to school to take tests everyday
59.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the author?
A.When you look at life as a test, you have a chance to deal with problems you face.
B.When you take life seriously, you are more likely to succeed and become happy.
C.When you see each problem a serious battle, you have more chances to survive.
D.When everything is working out just right, you can know how often it happens.
60.According to the passage, you'd better look at life as a test when_____.
A.you try to get the meaning of the poster
B.you have an easygoing boss
C.you are carrying out an experiment
D.you are in a rocky journey
61.According to the passage, what is the author’s attitude towards life?
A.He cares much about his life.
B.He doesn’t take his life seriously.
C.He knows where to go and what to do.
D.He thinks life is full of humorous wisdom.

Against the supposition that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia warm the climate, scientists have discovered that cooling may occur in areas where burnt trees allow more snow to mirror sunlight into space.
This finding suggests that taking steps to prevent northern forest fires to limit the release of greenhouse gases may warm the climate in northern regions.Usually large fires destroyed forests in these areas over the past decade.Scientists predict that with climate warming, fires may occur more frequently over the next several centuries as a result of a longer fire season.Sunlight taken in by the earth tends to cause warming, while heat mirrored back into space tends to cause cooling.
This is the first study to analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate.Earlier studies by other scientists have suggested that fire in northern regions speed up climate warming because greenhouse gases from burning trees and plants are released into the atmosphere and thus trap heat.
Scientists found that right after the fire, large amounts of greenhouse gases entered the atmosphere and caused warming.Ozone(臭氧)levels increased, and ash from the fire fell on far-off sea ice, darkening the surface and causing more radiation from the sun to be taken in.the following spring, however, the land within the area of the fire was brighter than before the fire, because fewer trees covered the ground.Snow on the ground mirrored more sunlight back into space, leading to cooling.
“We need to find out all possible ways to reduce the growth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.” Scientists tracked the change in the amount of radiation entering and leaving the climate system as a result of the fire, and found a measurement closely related to the global air temperature.Typically, fire in northern regions occurs in the same area every 80 to 150 years.Scientists, however, found that when fire occurs more frequently, more radiation is lost from the earth and cooling results.Specifically, they determined when fire returns 20 years earlier than predicted, 0.5 watts per square meter will be sent back into space. The net effect is cooling.Watts are used to measure the rate at which energy is gained or lost from the earth.
62.According to the new findings, taking steps to prevent northern forest fires may _______ .
A.result in a warming climate
B.cause the forest fires to occur more frequently
C.lead to a longer fire season
D.protect the forests and the environment there
63.The following are all the immediate effects after a forest fire EXCEPT _______ .
A.large amounts of greenhouse gases enter the atmosphere
B.the levels of ozone which is a type of oxygen increase
C.snow on the ground mirrors more sunlight back into space
D.ashes from the fire fall on the ice surface and take in more radiation from the sun[来源:21世纪教育网]
64.Earlier studies about northern forest fires _______ .
A.analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate
B.indicate that forest fires will pollute the atmosphere
C.suggest that people should take measures to protect environment
D.suggest that the fires will speed up climate warming
65.From the passage we can draw a conclusion that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia may _______ .
A.warm the climate as the supposition goes
B.allow more snow to reflect more sunlight into space and thus cool the climate
C.destroy large areas of forests and pollute the far-off sea ice
D.help to gain more energy rather than release more energy

I am glad to hear from you.In you letter you said you are having trouble learning
English.Indeed, English spoken in the U.S differs from that spoken in U.K for a variety of reasons. As we know, the United States is a multicultural country, whose language has brought in many different words from other languages. Many of the cultures and words have a deep effect on each other. As a matter of fact, it doesn’t make much difference whether you speak with an Brithish or American accent. The only purpose is always an effective and efficient communication, and an exact expression of ideas. In my point of view, you need confidence to improve you spoken English, and you need to actively join in the classroom discussion as well, just to improve through speaking.
I hope you can achieve great success in English.
