The elephant was lying heavily on its side, fast asleep．A few dogs started barking at it．The elephant woke up in a terrible anger: it chased the dogs into the village where they ran for safety．21世纪教育网

But Parbati doesn't catch elephants just for fun．“My work,” she says, “is to rescue man from the elephants, and to keep the elephants safe from man．” And this is exactly what Parbati has been doing for many years．Increasingly, the Indian elephant is angry: for many years, illegal hunters have attacked it and its home in the jungle has been reduced to small pieces of land．It is now fighting back．Whenever wild elephants enter a tea garden or a village, Parbati is called to guide the animals back to the jungle before they can kill．
The work of an elephant tamer also involves love and devotion．A good elephant tamer will spend hours a day singing love songs to a newly captured elephant．“Eventually they grow to love their tamers and never forget them．They are also more loyal than humans,” she said, as she climbed up one of her elephants and sat on the giant, happy animal．An elephant princess indeed!

You may have heard the term “the American Dream”．In 1848, James W．Marshall found gold in California and people began having golden dreams．That 19th century “American Dream" motivated the Gold Rush and gave California its nickname of the “Golden State”．

One of my favorite posters says, "Life is a test．It is only a test．Had this been a real life, you would have been instructed where to go and what to do．" Whenever I think of this humorous bit of wisdom, it reminds me not to take my life so seriously．
When you look at life and its many challenges as a test, or series of tests, you begin to see each issue you face as an opportunity to grow, a chance to discover more about life．Whether you're being bombarded（攻击） with problems, responsibilities, even insurmountable（不能超越的） difficulties, when looked at as a test, you always have a chance to succeed, in the sense of overcoming what is challenging you．If, on the other hand, you see each new issue you face as a serious battle that must be won in order to survive, you're probably in for（遭遇） a very rocky journey．The only time you're likely to be happy is when everything is working out just right．And we all know how often that happens．
As an experiment, see if you can apply this idea to something you are forced to deal with．Perhaps you have much pressure from your parents or you have a demanding boss．See if you can redefine the issue you face from being a "problem" to being a test．Rather than struggling with your issue, see if there is something you can learn from it．Ask yourself, "Why is this an issue in my life? Against the supposition that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia warm the climate, scientists have discovered that cooling may occur in areas where burnt trees allow more snow to mirror sunlight into space．
This finding suggests that taking steps to prevent northern forest fires to limit the release of greenhouse gases may warm the climate in northern regions．Usually large fires destroyed forests in these areas over the past decade．Scientists predict that with climate warming, fires may occur more frequently over the next several centuries as a result of a longer fire season．Sunlight taken in by the earth tends to cause warming, while heat mirrored back into space tends to cause cooling．
This is the first study to analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate．Earlier studies by other scientists have suggested that fire in northern regions speed up climate warming because greenhouse gases from burning trees and plants are released into the atmosphere and thus trap heat．
Scientists found that right after the fire, large amounts of greenhouse gases entered the atmosphere and caused warming．Ozone（臭氧）levels increased, and ash from the fire fell on far-off sea ice, darkening the surface and causing more radiation from the sun to be taken in．the following spring, however, the land within the area of the fire was brighter than before the fire, because fewer trees covered the ground．Snow on the ground mirrored more sunlight back into space, leading to cooling．
“We need to find out all possible ways to reduce the growth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere．” Scientists tracked the change in the amount of radiation entering and leaving the climate system as a result of the fire, and found a measurement closely related to the global air temperature．Typically, fire in northern regions occurs in the same area every 80 to 150 years．Scientists, however, found that when fire occurs more frequently, more radiation is lost from the earth and cooling results．Specifically, they determined when fire returns 20 years earlier than predicted, 0．5 watts per square meter will be sent back into space．The net effect is cooling．Watts are used to measure the rate at which energy is gained or lost from the earth．
