so… that…是一个常见的句式结构,表示“如此……以至于……”, 副词so之后接形容词或副词,that引导一个完整的句子,有时that还可省略。
例如本单元的这个句子:
That bird’s song is so beautiful that we would follow it.
One year, the weather was so dry that no food would grow. 有一年,天气太干旱了,以至于粮食颗粒不长。
The wife told her husband that unless he left the children to die in the forest, the whole family would die. 妻子告诉丈夫,如果他不把孩子们扔到森林里让他们自生自灭,整个家庭就会灭亡。
1)unless的意思是“如果不,若非,除非”,它引导的是一个条件状语从句,相当于if…not。
因此,上面的句子改写为:
…if he didn’t leave the children to die in the forest, the whole family would die.
2)whole形容词,意为“全部的:整体的”。
I told him the whole story.我把整个故事告诉了他。

all 可修饰各类名词,限定词放在all之后。all+限定词+n.: all the money所有的钱
whole 常修饰具有整体意义的n.(sing.), 限定词放在whole之前。
限定词+whole+n.: the whole class全班
当c.n.(pl.)前有具体数量词, 则可用whole: three whole days/all three days三天整

The sun is shining bright.阳光明媚。
3)bright还可作形容词,意为“明亮的;光线充足的”。We enjoyed the bright sunshine.我们享受灿烂的阳光。

1)感叹句通常由what和how引导,表示赞美、惊叹、喜悦等感情。what修饰名词,how修饰形容词或副词。
1.多么聪明的一个女孩!

2.多么惊人的成绩!
What an amazing achievement!
感叹句的语序:
how和what与被修饰词放在句首,其它部分用陈述句语序。
(1) How+形容词(副词)+主语+谓语!
How作状语,修饰形容词或副词。
这箱子多重啊!
How heavy the box is!
他跑得多快啊!
How fast he runs!
(2) What+名词+主语+谓语!
多大的一个盒子啊!
What a big box it is!
多美的画呀!
What beautiful pictures they are!
(3)在口语中,感叹句中的主语和谓语经常略去不说。
例如:
How hot (it is)! 好热啊!
What a question!问得多妙!
we thought…表示人们对过去的某种想法,判断等,可以译作“我们原想……; 我们本以为……”。如:
I thought he would come, but he didn’t.
We thought you were never coming back.
我以为你们再也回不来了。
As soon as you wake up,you must go to the forest with your father.
as soon as意为“一......就......;尽快”,引导时间状语从句。
如:As soon as I get to Beijing,I'll write to you.我一到北京,就给你写信。
I gave the alarm as soon as I saw the smoke.
我一看见冒烟,就发出了警报。
I' drop pieces of bread.我会撒点面包屑。

1)piece可数名词,意为“片;块;段”,其复数形式为pieces.a piece of意为“一片;一块;一段”,用来修饰不可数名词,表达数量。a piece of bread一片面包a piece of meat一块肉

2)“基数词(>1)+pieces of+不可数名词”作主语时,谓语动词用复数形式。
Three pieces of bread are enough for me.对我来说,三片面包足够了。
Unless we do,we won't find our way out.如果我们不这么做,我们就找不到出去的路。

1)find one's way out 意为“找到出路”。
I can't find my way out of the building.我找不到出大楼的路。
find out意为“弄清楚;查明”,通常有“经历曲折”的含义。
You'd better smell the tofu to find out whether it has gone bad.你最好闻一下这块豆腐,看看它是不是已经坏了。
It's leading us to that wonderful house made of bread,cake and candy.它正把我们引向那座用面包、蛋糕和糖果做成的奇妙的房子。

1)lead动词,意为“带路;领路”,其过去式和过去分词均为led。
Miss Li led me into the classroom.李老师把我领进了教室。
2)lead the way 带路
lead sb.to....引领某人到……
Who will lead the way?谁来带路?
She led me to the safe place.她带我到了安全的地方。
3)此句中made of bread, cake and sugar作定语,修饰名词house, 形容词wonderful也是house的定语。在英语中,大部分形容词作定语修饰名词时应前置,短语或句子作定语修饰名词时则后置。
a. be made of表示制成成品的制作过程仅发生物理变化,可看出原材料,保留原材料的质和形。
The kite is made of paper.
这个风筝是用纸做的。
b. be made from表示制成的东西的原材料在制作过程中发生化学变化,完全失去原材料的外形或特征, 或成品已无法辨认出原材料。
Butter is made from milk.
黄油是从牛奶中提炼出来的。
