The British often simply say "hello" when they meet friends. They usually shake hands only when they meet for the first time. Social kissing is a peck (轻吻) on the cheek. It is used commonly in an informal (非正式的)situation between men and women and also between women who know each other very well.
In Japan, people are supposed to bow when they greet someone, instead of giving a handshake or a hug.
In Albania, men shake hands when greeting one another. A kiss on the cheek may be also common if there is a close relationship. Women are supposed to shake hands or kiss each other on both cheeks.
In Armenia, a woman is supposed to wait for a man to offer his hand for a handshake. Between good friends and family members, a kiss on the cheek and a hug are also common.

We know good manners are important. Today I am going to tell you something about manners in different countries. I think you already know that people in different countries usually have different ways of doing things. Something that is rude in one country may be quite polite in another.
For example, in Britain you mustn't lift your bowl to your mouth when you are having liquid food. That is considered bad manners in Britain. But in Japan you needn't worry about making a noise when you drink something. It shows that you are enjoying it. In Britain we try not to put our hands on the table at all during a meal. In Mexico, however, guests are expected to keep their hands on the table throughout a meal. In Arabic countries we must be careful with our hands. You see, in Arabic countries you mustn't eat with your left hand. This is considered to be very impolite. So, what should you do if you visit a foreign country? Well, you needn't worry. You can ask the native people there to help you and you can just watch carefully and try to do what they do.

Also, don't wrap a present in white, black, or blue paper, because these are the colors for funerals (葬礼). Don't give a knife, because something sharp can cut a friendship.
IN RUSSIA if we give flowers as a present, we have to give an odd number of them (one, three, five, etc.) because even numbers of flowers (two, four, six, etc.) are for funerals.
IN GERMANY flowers are good presents to take to your dinner hostess, but don't take her red roses because it means you are in love with her. Don't take thirteen of anything because it's an unlucky number. Don't take an even number of anything, either. Don't wrap your present in white, brown, or black paper.

When two people meet, there are a lot of ways of greeting. The ways of greeting are not always the same in different countries.
21 It is a way to show respect to the other person. Athletes from opposite teams shake hands before a game for the same reason. However, most Americans don't shake hands when they meet people they already know well. When American friends meet each other, they might only wave, or maybe just nod (点头) their heads.
In New Zealand, there is a special way of greeting called "Hongi". 22 This is an old tradition that comes from the Maor, who were the first people to live in New Zealand. Even today, many New Zealanders still press their foreheads when they meet.
Kissing is sometimes used as a way to greet someone. 23 It was the custom for visitors to kiss these rings when they came for a meeting. In France, when people meet, they sometimes kiss each other on the face.
In Japan, people bow to each other every time they meet. 24 People decide how low to bow depending on how respected the other person is.
Today, new ways of greeting are created all the time. 25 The important thing is that the people they are greeting understand them.
A. In some countries, important people used to wear special rings.
B. In America, two people usually greet each other with a handshake.
C. People can do this with a quick "hi", a handshake, or even a simple smile.
D. In the greeting, two people press their noses and foreheads (前额) together and close their eyes.

Dear Cindy,
I'm glad to know that you are coming to China. China is a country with a long history, so there are many customs here. Let me give you some suggestions about Chinese customs.
Firstly, you are supposed to shake hands when you meet someone for the first time. Secondly, when you eat dinner with other people, it's rude to point at others with your chopsticks. And don't make any noise when you have your soup. Besides, if you are going to a party, you are supposed to arrive at the party on time, or a few minutes earlier. You are not supposed to give a clock or a watch to a friend as a present, because that has the same sound as the word “death" in Chinese.
I hope that these tips are useful. Have a good time in China!
Best wishes!
Yours,
Wang Xue

As we know, there are differences between Western culture and Chinese culture. We can see differences when we pay attention to the way words are used. Let's look at some words about animals and plants. Most expressions in Chinese about the dog, for example, "a homeless dog" "a mad dog" "a running dog" and "a dog catching a mouse", have negative meanings. But in Western countries, dogs are considered to be honest and good friends of humans. In English, people use the dog to describe positive actions. For example, "you are a lucky dog" means you are a lucky person. And "every dog has its day" means each person has good luck sometimes. To describe a person's serious illness, they say “sick as a dog". The word "dog-tired" means very tired. However, Chinese love cats very much. But in Western culture, "cat" is often used to describe a woman who is cruel (冷酷的).There are many other examples of how "cat" is used differently as well.
The rose is regarded as a symbol of love in both China and some Western countries. People think if rose stands for love, peace, courage and friendship. And the rose is the national flower of England, America and many other countries.
