2. 动名词(教材Page 4 4a)
动名词其实就是动词ing形式,具有名词的性质,可以在句中作主语、宾语和表语等。同时,它又具有动词的特点,可以接宾语构成动名词短语。
?living in the city(动名词living后带宾语city) 住在城市
?reading aloud(动名词reading被副词aloud修饰) 大声读
动名词的具体用法:
①作主语:动名词作主语时一般可用动词不定式替换。
?Eating too much is bad for your health.= To eat too much is bad for your health.吃得太多对你的健康没有好处。
?Swimming in the river is dangerous.= To swim in the river is dangerous.在江河游泳是危险的。
【警示】动名词或动词不定式作主语时,谓语动词要使用单数第三人称形式。
②作表语:动名词作表语一般句子的主语常常是无生命的名词,而且表语和主语是对等
关系,说明主语的内容。
?His task is finishing the work. 他的任务是完成工作。
?Her hobby is collecting stamps. 她的爱好是集邮。
③作宾语:常用于allow, try, like, finish, enjoy, forget, stop, love, mind, practice, can’t stand, can’t help等动词或动词短语之后。
?We will finish reading the book in a week.我们将在一周内读完这本书。
? I enjoy living in China.我喜欢居住在中国。
【警示】有些动词如forget,remember, stop,try, like,love等后面接动名词和动词不定式作宾语都可以,但意义不同。
④作定语:表示所修饰词的用途、性质、特征等,位于所修饰词的前面。
?They went to the swimming pool yesterday.他们昨天去了游泳池。
?He joined the skating club last year. 他去年加入了溜冰俱乐部。
⑤介词后的动词要使用动名词。
?She passed me without saying a word. 她从我身边过去,没有说一句话。

People often ask me for advice on how to learn English. Everyone is different. I’ll share some of my experience. I once learned English in Beijing University, but I mostly learned English on my own.
One thing I can tell is that, once you’ve started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. When you’re riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about "how would I say them in English?" At first, it will be with simple words or word groups, but later you should think about bigger phrases and word groups. Now I’m in America, and for most time, I just think in English and speak it directly(直接地). It’s amazing how much this helps.
For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of trying to speak English with others because I didn’t want to make mistakes. Finally I got over it. And while traveling in America, I tried to hang out with friends who speak no Chinese, so I have no choice but to speak English. I wasn’t afraid to make mistakes and I don’t mind others laughing at me. My English started improving more quickly after that.
It may be a good idea to ask any of your American friends to look at the way you’re writing, and give you some advice.

Using good grammar is important. However, studying grammar rarely(很少) leads to good results! Most students who study lots of grammar don’t remember long enough to use that grammar when they need it. Instead of studying grammar rules that are easy to forget, it is much better to focus on sentence patterns that you can use often when speaking English.
The human brain is not very good at remembering rules when we have to speak. Our brain’s greatest strength(长处) is as a "pattern recognition(回忆)" machine, which no electronic computer can match! Many students learn to use this power when they study English sentence patterns. You can do it too!
You can study sentence patterns by using most grammar textbooks. The important thing is to only study sentences that illustrate a grammar point — do NOT study the rules! Many students have found that they often only have to learn one example sentence in order to master one grammar point. When you do this, you are using the pattern-recognition power of your brain very effectively(有效的).
Another advantage to studying sentence patterns is that it saves time.Because you are only studying key sentences, you can study four or five different grammar books very quickly. So, don’t waste any more time on grammar!
