（A）Who wears clothes?
You might put on a raincoat to walk in the rain, but a duck doesn’t need to.
Raindrops roll right off a duck’s back. The duck makes its feather waterproof by spreading waxy oil over them with its beak. The oil comes from a spot near its tail called a preen gland.
You might put on a jacket to play in the snow, but a polar bear doesn’t need to.
A polar bear is more likely to be too hot than too cold. Two layers of fur cover every bit of the bear but its nose and the pads on the bottoms of its feet. The long, oily outer coat keeps the thick, fuzzy undercoat warm and dry.
You might put on fancy clothes for a special party, but a peacock doesn’t need to.
Only boy birds should be called peacocks. The girls are peahens, babies are peachicks, and the whole bunch are peafowl. Peacocks show off their fancy feathers in a fabulous fan-shaped display when they want to impress the peahens.
You might put on a bike helmet to protect your head, but a woodpecker doesn’t need to.
Bam! Bam! Woodpeckers bang their heads against tree trunks thousands of times a day, looking for food or drilling holes for nests. If you tried that, you could damage your brain permanently. Scientists are studying woodpecker heads to learn how to build better helmets.
You might put on a uniform to show which team you’re on, but a naked mole rat doesn’t need to.
Naked mole rats live together in big groups, but different groups don’t like mixing with one another . They can’t see very well as they scurry through their dark underground tunnels, so how do they know who’s who? They use smell to tell friends from strangers.
