What is the building made of and what is it used for?
It is made of glass and plants can grow in it when the weather is cold outside.
Have you ever seen a greenhouse?
How does it work?
The air inside is warm because the glass traps the heat from the sun and keeps it from escaping. This makes the greenhouse heat up and so the plants can grow throughout the cold period.
What are the “greenhouse gases”?
What do you think greenhouse gases do?
greenhouse effect
Greenhouse gases perform the same function as the glass in a greenhouse --- they trap the heat of the sun and keep the air surrounding the earth warm.
What’s greenhouse effect?
the effect of global warming
the effect of global warming
Global warming / The warming of the earth.
Skim the text and find out the main
topic of the article.
What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
What are the diagrams for?
To illustrate points by providing evidence.
To introduce the topic.
Sophie Armstrong wrote the magazine article. The name of the magazine is “Earth care”.
2. What are the names of the three
scientists mentioned in the article?
They are Dr. Janice Foster, Charles Keeling and George Hambley.
Who wrote the magazine article? What is the name of the magazine?
Read the text quickly and answer the questions.
3. What do they think about global
warming? Do they agree with one
another?
There are some very different attitudes among scientists towards this issue. Some think the effects will be terrible, while some others believe that we should not worry about it.
4. What are the two graphs about?
Graph 1 shows the temperature increase of one degree Fahrenheit between 1860 to 2000.
Graph 2 shows the carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere from 1957 to 1997.
Choose the best answers.
Who found out the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from 1957 to 1977? A. Dr. Janice Foster. B. Charles Keeling. C. George Hambley. D. Sophie Armstrong.

issue. B. They are talking about one of the key
issues in the election campaign. C. The government is expected to issue a
statement about the election. D. The magazine has 12 issues each year.

A. actually global warming is good
for man B. we should do nothing about the
global warming C. catastrophes will happen if the
globe keeps on warming D. a lot remains to be found out about

Construction
Part 1
(1)
Introduce a debate over the issue of global warming.
Main idea of each part
Part 2
(2-5)
How global warming comes about.
Part 3
(6)
List two different attitudes among scientists towards global warming.
Part 4
(7)
It’s up to readers to think and decide whether people should do something about global warming or not.
It has a title, a first paragraph that runs across the page and is in bold, the main text in two columns, graphs / diagrams, two quotes.
What is the structure of a magazine like this and how is the text organized?
Of the two ideas, Dr Janice Foster’s and George Hambley’s, which are you in favor of? Why?
Dr Janice Foster’s. Because we have witnessed a large number of disasters predicted by some people.
What should we do about global warming?
Try to reduce the use of motor vehicles.
Use less heat and air conditioning.
Plant trees.
Use the “Off” Switch.
Buy energy-efficient products.
Change a light bulb.
A: We shall do something about global warming.
B: We shall do nothing about global warming.
Debate
Should we do anything about global warming?
Dear fellow students,
It is reported that the average temperature within the Arctic Circle has risen by 2-3 degrees Celsius in the past ten years. At the Copenhagen Climate Summit 2009 all nations were required to reduce the greenhouse gas emission to save the earth. At the beginning of 2010, extremely cold weather hit Asia, Europe, and North America, which is the evidence of

global warming. As is known to all, our environment has been worsening due to human activity. If we don’t take effective measures now, human beings will not be able to survive in the future. If we can save energy, recycle waste and plant more trees, we can make the earth a better place. So let’s take action from now on! Let’s save the earth.
Title: The Crisis of Global Warming

consequence : 海平面上升 自然灾害频繁

2. 少用机动车辆
3. 植树造林

Global warming has become one of the biggest environmental concerns for people all over the world. With the booming of economy, the emission of the greenhouse gas, consisting of about 70% carbon dioxide, has been steadily increased, contributing greatly to the global warming. The increase in the temperature of earth has caused many harmful effects. It melts the ice caps, raising sea levels. It disturbs weather patterns, causing frequent natural disasters such as floods, droughts, severe storms, hurricanes and so on.
A Sample
Actually, it’s easy for everyone to do something to save energy and reduce the emission of greenhouse gas. For example, turn off an electrical appliance if it is not used. Walking, cycling, carpooling or using public transportation instead of using motor vehicles are all good ways to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide. We are also supposed to plant trees and preserve forests. Every individual counts and individuals together makes a big difference.
