They were able to do this because sugar had become less expensive.Machines were invented to help with the production. Sweets no longer had to be made by hand. In 1827, a sweet shop opened in a small town called Pateley Bridge in the north of England. It was called The Oldest Sweet Shop in England. In 2013, Guinness World Records confirmed (证 实) it as being the longest running sweet shop in the world. I could say no. Instead, I smile. It's not that I think table manners (礼仪) are unimportant. I don't want to raise dirty kids. But I've always felt that if I wanted my children to grow up with a happy and healthy attitude to food, asking them from a young age to behave like grown-ups at the dinner table was going to do harm to them. When I was a child, my mom always asked me to hold my knife and fork right. I decided, if I wanted my children to explore (探索) food by eating it, I was going to have to relax and let them explore it in other ways, too.Anna Groom is a dietitian, whose job is to give people advice about the kind of food they should eat. She works with children who are“fussy (挑 食 的) eaters”.“It's really important to let children explore the food as a whole — not just what it tastes like,” she says.“It makes them know more about it. It makes them feel ‘safe' with it.”The idea is that they are more likely to try it, and less likely to become fussy. So — even at age seven — I will continue to let my daughter play with her food. I am teaching her table manners, but I'm doing it step by step. In fact, I believe it is more useful if I talk to her about table manners away from the table, when she's not hungry and trying to enjoy her food.My other child is now 14. He has always eaten everything and anything that comes his way. How are his table manners? Pretty good. I've noticed he still likes to have an animalistic sniff (嗅) of a frankfurter before he puts it in his mouth, but he knows how to eat politely. After dinner, the girls have gone off to play. I go to clear the last things from the table. The raspberries have all been eaten.32. How did the author feel when she saw her daughter playing with her food?A. Calm. B. Angry. C. Excited. D. Last year, the winner received a medal and someone even suggested a gold kite as the prize of the competition.W: That’s cool.(Text 9)M: In yesterday’s language class, you said you want to be a writer, Kate.W: That’s right, Mr. Ross.M: Well, the English Club has got a competition this month for young writers. It’s a short story competition. Are you interested?W: Yes! But am I old enough? I’ll be 13 next month.M: That’s fine. Anyone who’s 15 or younger than that can enter.W: Great! I wrote a story about my cat last week. Can I use that?M: Well, your story must be called The City, actually, so it needs to be about something that happens in a place where lots of people live. And your story must arrive on or before May the 15th. It’s April the 30th today so you’ve got enough time.W: OK!M: And to find out about the number of words, prizes or anything else, call the club secretary. W: Thanks!M: You’re welcome. Good luck!(Text 10) Brandon Forest Park is open all year round to visitors. In the centre of the park is the Forest shop and café.
