The idea that red means stop and green means has influenced our lives in more ways than just traffic signals(信号). We have been taught from a young age that the color red means danger and green means it's okay to move forward. But why were those colors chosen for traffic lights in the first place? For something we have to look at every day, why couldn't they have been prettier colors?
Well, it's important to know that before traffic lights for cars, there were traffic signals for trains. At first, railway companies used red to mean stop, white to mean go, and green to mean warn. As you could imagine, trains ran into a few problems with white meaning go. For example, one train mistook a bright star for a white light and something unexpected happened. Because of that, railway companies finally moved green meaning go and used yellow to mean warn. And it's been that way ever since.
Red has always been a color that mean danger, long before cars were even around. This most likely started because it's the color with the longest wavelength so it can be seen somewhere farther than other colors.
But, believe it or not, yellow was once used to mean stop. Back in the 1900s, some stop signs were yellow because it was too hard to see a red sign in a poorly lit area. Finally, highly reflective materials(高反射材料) were developed and red stop signs were born. Since yellow can be seen well at all times of the day, school zones, some traffic signs, and school buses continue to be printed yellow.
So next time you are impatiently waiting at a traffic light, don't get so mad at them, they've certainly come a long way.

D.?Because yellow means it's OK to go forward.
5.What does the text mainly tell us?
A.?How important traffic lights are.

C.?What red, yellow and green can be used for.
D.?Why traffic lights are red, yellow and green.

Searching for parking spaces has long been a headache for many office workers in many big cities of China, especially for those working in central business districts. Parking near their companies for five days a week could cost them a lot of money. At the same time, even with prices for parking lots in residential areas(居民区) rising, most of their spaces remain idle during workdays. Now a new form of sharing economy has appeared in China—the shared parking space. It has become a huge market in some big cities.
In Qingdao, a coastal(海岸的) city in Shangdong, up to 10,000 personal parking spaces have been turned into shared ones with the help of “Airparking”, an online shared parking platform developed by a network company from Guangzhou.
Through a special app, users can either share or order a parking place. Owners who have idle parking spaces can share some information, including the parking position, license number and time limit(限制) on the platform. With the information, users can easily find the nearest place to park. The average (平均的) parking cost for shared parking is 4 yuan each hour, almost the same as the service cost in traditional parking spaces.
Qingdao is one of the Chinese cities that encourage shared parking. Some other big cites, including Beijing, Shanghai and Hefei, have also begun to try this idea. The Shanghai government, for example, has set up more than 6,500 shared parking spaces to encourage the public to use. Shared parking will be more and more helpful to the drivers.

Are you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time — about eight hours after you wake up — your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy.
Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later.
In many parts of the world, people take naps in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer less from problem such as heart disease. Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it!
If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a short nap — even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.
Why do you sometimes feel sleep in the early afternoon?

C. you’d better take a nap about an hour after you have lunch.
D. you can sleep as long as you like so that you won’t feel tired or sleepy.
3. What can we learn about “naps” according to t he third paragraph?
A, doctors need to take naps while employers don’t.
B. taking naps is helpful for people’s health in spring and summer.
C. if you take naps every day, you’ll have less risk of heart disease.
D. all the people in warmer climates take naps in the middle of the day.
4. We can infer(判断) from the passage that__________.
A. you will feel less sleepy if you sleep for a long time.
B. taking a nap whenever you want will do good to your health.
C. if you get up at 6:30 a.m., you’d better take a nap about 2:30 p.m.
D. sleep for eight hours, and you’ll feel sleepy a short period later.
5. What would be the best title for the text?
A, just for a rest B, all for a nap
C, a special sleep pattern D, taking naps in warmer climates

In recent history, there have been some amazing inventions which have changed our lives. The plane has made international travel faster and easier. The Internet has brought people closer. And you must know the names of some famous inventors like Henry Ford or Steve Jobs. But there are many everyday objects which you probably don't notice and you don't know who invented them. Take for example Nils Bohlin who invented the modem-day car seat belt (安全带).
?Before 1959, only two-point seat belts were available, and the only people who often wore them were race car drivers. The two-point seat belt couldn't protect passengers from internal injuries (内伤) during serious car accidents.
??? In 1958, Bohlin joined Volvo Car Corporation as a safety engineer. Then he came up with the three-point seat belt to keep passengers from flying out of their cars during?collisions. The three-point seat belt used one strap (带子) across the chest (胸部) and another across the legs and then the two joined at me same place.
??? Amazingly, this was a very simple idea which no one had tried before. The three-point seat belt was introduced on Volvo cars in 1959. For more people's safety, Volvo made the new seat belt design available to other car makers for free. Since then, engineers have worked to improve the three-point seat belt, but the basic design remains Bohlin's.
??? At the time of Bohlin's death in September 2002, Volvo announced that the seat belt had saved more than one million lives since it was introduced.

We have found plastic in the ocean and in animals like birds, fish and whales. But for the first time, scientists have found plastic in human poop (大便) , USA Today reported.?
The findings came from a pilot study led by scientists from Environment Agency Austria. The researchers followed eight healthy volunteers from different parts of the world. The volunteers wrote down what they ate for a week and then provided a stool sample (大便样本) for testing.
Scientists found nine different kinds of plastic in the stool samples, according to the study. About 20 small plastic particles (颗粒) were found in every 10 grams (克) of stool. The particles measured between 50 to 500 micrometers.
"The smallest plastic particles can enter the bloodstream, the lymphatic system, and may even reach the liver (肝脏)," Philipp Schwabl, who took part in the research said to the Guardian.
However, the scientists aren't sure if the plastic is harmful to humans. They're not sure how the plastic got in the volunteers' bodies, either. But most of the volunteers said they drank from plastic bottles and also ate seafood that could include plastic from ocean pollution.
In fact, plastic is everywhere around us. Every year, an average of 8 million tons of plastic waste goes into the oceans, according to National Geographic. There, sunlight and waves break the plastic items down to the sizes of grains of rice. Most of the particles stay in the ocean. Others can spread into the soil, and air. Could plastic in the air fall onto food and get into the human body?
According to USA Today, 90% of sea salt which is sold in the world includes plastic. And even some drinking water has been found to have tiny plastic particles in it.
According to USA Today, scientists have recently discovered__________.
Plastic pollution is worse than ever.
Animals like birds or fish can eat plastic.
Sea salt is not safe to eat any more.
Plastic has been found in human waste.
The pilot study shows that____________.
Scientists from Australia followed eight healthy volunteers.
The volunteers kept a record of what they ate for a week.
Nine plastic particles were found in the volunteers’ stool samples.
It proved that ocean pollution has become rather serious.
The underlined words “stool sample” probably mean ___________in Chinese in this passage.
大便样本 B,科研例子 C,凳子样品 D,化验报告
From paragraph 4 we can know _______________.
Plastic particles are inside all of us.
Plastic can harm the lymphatic system.
Plastic particles can be a few different sizes.
Plastic particles can reach many parts of our bodies.
The writer probably wants to tell us____________.
Plastic does no harm to our bodies.
People should stop drinking tap water.
It can be hard to avoid plastic in food and drinks.
The best way to deal with plastic waste is to burn it.

Everyone has got two personalities—one is shown to the world and the other is secret and real. You don’t show your secret personality when you are awake because you can control your behavior, but when you are asleep, sleeping position shows the real you. In a normal night, of course, people frequently change their position. The important position is the one that you go to sleep in.
If you go to sleep on your back, you are a very open person. You normally trust people and you are easily influenced by fashion or your new ideas. You don’t like to upset people, so you never express your real feelings. You are quite shy and you aren’t very confident.
If you sleep on your stomach, you are a rather secretive person. You worry a lot and always easily get upset. You always stick to your own opinions or judgement, but you don’t raise your hopes too much. You usually live for today not tomorrow. This means that you enjoy having a good time.
If you sleep curled up(蜷缩), you are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of yourself and you are often very defensive. You are shy and you don’t normally like meeting people. You prefer to be on your own. You are easily hurt.
If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a well-balanced(平衡的) personality. You know your strengths and weaknesses. You are usually careful. You believe in yourself. You sometimes feel anxious, but you don’t often get sad. You always say what you think even if it makes people rather angry.

Netflix’s ‘Flavorful Origins(《风味原产地》)’ Is a Celebration of Food From China’s Chaoshan Region
By Greg Morabito Feb. 16, 2019, 9:12 a.m.
Season 1 of Flavorful Origins are directed by Chen Xiaoqing, well-known for his documentary food series A Bite of China. The show is broken up into 20 episodes(集), each around 12 minutes long, talking about one dish or ingredient in the Chaoshan area, such as white olives(橄榄), rice noodles, or mandarin oranges. Together, they show us Chaoshan food culture, born of traditions centuries old.
Chaoshan cooking is well-known for its freshness of ingredients. As said in the show, simple food shines in the cooks’ hands. These ingredients often come from the sea in Chaoshan. One episode shows a local tradition of eating marinated(腌制的) raw seafood such as colorful flower crabs(螃蟹). There are other oceanic surprises—for example, Chaoshan’s long history of farming and drying seaweed.
Everyone who watches Flavorful Origins will surely have a different set of favorites. The episodes “Tofu Cake” and “Marinated Crabs” are the picks of most my friends while my favorite is the “Teochew Orange Cakes”. I have a sweet tooth! My mouth was watering when I saw them slow-cooked in sugar. Chaoshan is the place I will go on my next holiday!
Many foodies wish each episode could be longer so they can learn more about the people and food in the areas. This show is certainly pretty, but some people also mention that its English translation brings the whole thing down.
1.Who is the director of Season 1 of Flavorful Origins?
2.How many episodes do Season 1 of Flavorful Origins have?
3.What kind of marinated raw seafood is mentioned in this passage?
4.What’s the author’s favourite episode?
5.What makes some people not so much satisfied with the show?

Chinese ancient poetry competition a success at UIBE
The University of International Business and Economics(对外经贸大学) recently organized a competition on Chinese ancient poems to improve students’ understanding of Chinese traditional culture and celebrate World Reading Day,which falls on April 23.
About 1,300 students took part in the primary poetry contest in late March and four teams,?made up of 12 students,?entered the final,?which was on Thursday.
The final included a four-part exam that tested students’ knowledge of Chinese ancient poems and other forms of Chinese literature.
University Vice President (副校长) Zhao Zhongxiu said he was glad that the competition attracted attention from so many students on university and raised their interest and sense in traditional Chinese culture.
Qi Xiaoming,a professor of Chinese literature at the university said,“In that sense,?to fully understand a Chinese ancient poem requires students to recite (背诵) and understand the meaning in the very beginning of learning. Then,?as the students grow older and connect what the poem talks about with their own lives,?they will see more.”
The popularity of a TV program on China Central Television,?Chinese Poetry Conference(《中国诗词大会》) which has been broadcast(播放) for four seasons, has inspired an increasing number of education institutions like UIBE to hold a similar event of their own.
The purpose of the TV program is to appreciate the beauty of Chinese ancient poetry and to learn from the wisdom of the great minds of ancient China.

One day I offered to help Mum cook some fish. Everything went smoothly until I put some sugar into the pan. I mistook it for salt! To make matters worse, the fish got stuck to the bottom of the pan and were burnt. That day I realized cooking is never an easy job. It needs skills and patience.
In my opinion, it is necessary for young people to learn cooking as it is an important life skill everyone should master. What’s more, it may help us learn a lesson about love and care for others. Each homemade meal is filled with love of the one who cooks it.
