Hello, guys! Today we are going to talk about an argumentation, called a quilt of a country.
This article is augmented by Anna Quindlen. We will tell more about her later!

Before we start, let’s watch a video. After that, you are going to answer my question: What have you learnt about America from this video?
Play the Video
All right, you all have the great answers. Now, you are going to answer another question: Do you agree with the notion that all men are created equal? You have 2 minutes to discuss with your partner and then you will explain your reasons. Let’s start!
Excellent, guys!

Now open your book and do a skimming reading. As you read, circle all the words you don’t know, and try to answer my question: What was Anna Quindlen’s claim?
All right, time’s over! You can share your answer with your partner in 1 minute.
Ok, let’s check your answer with mine. America is an improbable idea, its not supposed to work but it does. Do you agree?

Well, let’s learn some new vocabularies. Let’s look at the whiteboard.
discordant, there are 3 syllables in this word. The first is dis, and then cord, the last is ant. Let’s say it together, dis-cord-ant, discordant. Discordant is an adjective, look at this picture, it means unrelated; or out of place.

All right, let’s play a word game. Look at the whiteboard, now there are some asteroids will hit the earth. If you call their name, they may disappear. So, all the heroes let’s protect our earth.
incendiary coalescing pluralistic bigotry calico bemoan disparate

Now, let’s play another game, in this game, you need to match the words with their meanings. After 1 minutes, I will say a word and you need to say it meaning.

Ok, let’s start!undermined, diversity, tenuous, mongrel, vexing…

Now, let’s do a group work, called jigsaw reading, four in a group, and I will divide the article into 4 parts. Each member of a group needs to choose one part. You need to answer the questions of your own part. After 3 minutes you will communicate with your group members and get all the answers of the article.

Now, let’s find out the answers of your own part.
All right, time’s over. Now you discuss with your group member. Try to get all the answers of the article.

Now, let’s check the answers together.

All right, let’s try to write a summary of "A Quilt of a Country", you can exchange your work with your partner when you finish. You have 2 minutes to do this.
All right, this is my summary, do you agree?

Now, I want to share you some background knowledge of this article. This article was written on Sep, 26, 2001. A few days after the 911 attacks. America faced a crossroad, what should people choose, apartheid, segregation, or coalescing and unite? Anna Quindlen wrote the article to show us why all the different people and cultures our needed to unite and make our country.

You may not know what is 911 attacks, now I show you a short video of it.

Well, you may feel horrible of 911 attacks. Nowadays, we still have a common enemy, the coronavirus disease. This virus was first detected in Wuhan, and now Spread all over the world(pandemic). What can we do now? To the people lived in Wuhan, who infected with the disease? Ostracize? Apartheid? Give warmth? Unite?
Discuss with your partner and write down some key points and it’s your homework to write an essay about it.

Class is over, thank you for studying, bye.
