Jenifer
Mauer
has
needed
more
willpower
than
the
typical
college
student
to
pursue
her
goal
of
earning
a
nursing
degree.
That
willpower
bore
fruit
when
Jennifer
graduated
from
University
of
Wisconsin-Eau
Claire
and
became
the
first
in
her
large
family
to
earn
a
bachelor's
degree.
Mauer,
of
Edgar,
Wisconsin,
grew
up
on
a
farm
in
a
family
of
10
children.
Her
dad
worked
at
a
job
away
from
the
farm,
and
her
mother
ran
the
farm
with
the
kids.
After
high
school,
Jennifer
attended
a
local
technical
college,
working
to
pay
her
tuition(学费),
because
there
was
no
extra
money
set
aside
for
a
college
education.
After
graduation,
she
worked
to
help
her
sisters
and
brothers
pay
for
their
schooling.
Jennifer
now
is
married
and
has
three
children
of
her
own.
She
decided
to
go
back
to
college
to
advance
her
career
and
to
be
able
to
better
support
her
family
while
doing
something
she
loves:
nursing.
She
chose
the
UW-Eau
Claire
program
at
Ministry
Saint
Joseph's
Hospital
in
Marshfield
because
she
was
able
to
pursue
her
four-year
degree
close
to
home.
She
could
drive
to
class
and
be
home
in
the
evening
to
help
with
her
kids.
Jenifer
received
great
support
from
her
family
as
she
worked
to
earn
her
degree:
Her
husband
worked
two
jobs
to
cover
the
bills,
and
her
68-year-old
mother
helped
take
care
of
the
children
at
times.
Through
it
all,
she
remained
in
good
academic
standing
and
graduated
with
honors.
Jennifer
sacrificed(牺牲)to
achieve
her
goal,
giving
up
many
nights
with
her
kids
and
missing
important
events
to
study.
“Some
nights
my
heart
was
breaking
to
have
to
pick
between
my
kids
and
studying
for
exams
or
papers,”
she
says.
However,
her
children
have
learned
an
important
lesson
witnessing
their
mother
earn
her
degree.
Jennifer
is
a
first-generation
graduate
and
an
inspiration
to
her
family-and
that's
pretty
powerful.
4.
What
did
Jennifer
do
after
high
school?

dad
with
his
work.
B.
She
ran
the
family
farm
on
her
own.

supported
herself
through
college.
D.
She
taught
her
sisters
and
brothers
at
home.
5.

did
Jennifer
choose
the
program
at
Ministry
Saint
Joseph's
Hospital
in
Marshfield?
A.
To
take
care
of
her
kids
easily.
B.
To
learn
from
the

her
goal?
A.
Her
health.
B.
Her
time
with
family.
C.
Her
reputation.

Love
breaks
down
barriers.
C.
Hard
work
pays
off.
D.
Education
is
the
key
to
success.
C
People
like
to
post
their
selfies(自拍照)
on
social
media.
To
know
more
about
it,
scientists
at
Syracuse
University
in
New
York
recently
did
a
research
and
came
up
with
some
surprising
findings.
People
who
post
selfies
and
use
editing
software
to
make
themselves
look
better
show
behavior
connected
to
narcissism(自恋),
the
researchers
said.
Makana
Chock,
a
professor
from
Syracuse
University,
said
because
social
media
is
mostly
used
by
people
to
share
unimportant
information
about
their
lives,
it
is
a
good
place
for
people
to
“work
towards
satisfying
their
own
vanity.”
Those
“likes”
under
their
Facebook
selfies
make
them
feel
good.
Besides,
people
who
post
group
selfies
show
a
need
for
popularity
and
a
need
to
belong
to
a
group,
the
research
found.
Some
people
feel
“peer(同伴)
pressure”
to
post
selfies
and
some
follow
the
popular
belief
that
if
there
is
no
picture
of
an
event
or
experience,
it
did
not
really
happen.
“Anyway,
it
shouldn’t
be
seen
as
negative.
People
get
sense
of
satisfaction
especially
when
they
get
likes.
And
it
does
no
harm,”
Chock
said.
Other
findings
from
the
study
include:
There
are
no
major
differences
on
how
often
men
and
women
post
selfies
and
how
often
they
use
editing
software.
But
men
who
post
selfies
showed
more
of
a
need
to
be
seen
as
popular
than
women
who
posted
selfies.
Chock
said
posting
selfies
on
social
media
is
not
all
that
different
from
what
people
have
done
for
many
years.
On
trips
and
special
events,
our
parents
and
grandparents
used
cameras
instead
of
phones
to
take
photos.
They
would
bring
back
photos
to
show
friends
and
family.
You
had
no
choice
but
to
look
at
them.
You
probably
commented
about
how
nice
everyone
in
the
photos
looked,
especially
children
and
the
person
showing
the
photos.
They
were
happy
to
hear
your
comments.
That
was
the
old
way
of
“clicking
like”.
On
social
media,
however,
people
can
decide
not
to
look
at
photos
---
even
if
they
click
“like”.
8.
What
is
the
research
mainly
about?
A.
The
ways

making
people
look
better
in
selfies.

The
reasons
for
people
posting
selfies
on
social
media.
C.
The
differences
between
men
and
women
in
posting
selfies.
D.
The
connections
between
posting
selfies
and
mental
health.
9.
What
does
the
word
“vanity”
in
paragraph
2
probably
mean?
A.
A
deep
desire
to
know
about
something.
B.
A
special
need
to
be
more
popular.
C.
Too
much
pride
in
one’s
own
appearance.

and
family
______.
A.
to
win
praise
from
viewers
B.
to
show
off
their
cameras
C.

improve
relationships
D.
to
share
good
moments

While
the
human
world
is
suffering
from
the
novel
coronavirus
outbreak,
our
planet
is
actually
showing
certain
signs
of
"recovery"
from
the
damage
caused
by
human
activity.
According
to
BBC,
new
satellite
images
released
by
the
European
Space
Agency
showed
that
the
levels
of
air
pollutants
and
greenhouse
gases
have
"fallen
sharply"
in
major
cities
in
Europe
and
the
United
Stated
ever
since
the
lockdown(活动限制)started.
This
is
a
great
example
of
how
the
world
can
change
overnight
as
soon
as
people
change
their
behavior—especially
after
recent
discoveries
in
Antarctica.
An
international
team
of
89
scientists
found
that
the
ice
in
Greenland
and
Antarctica
was
melting
six
times
faster
in
the
2010s
than
it
was
in
the
1990s.
And
in
February
Argentina's
Marambio
research
station
in
Antarctica
recorded
a
record
high
temperature
of
20.75℃
in
the
continent.
So
what
exactly
will
happen
if
the
temperature
keeps
rising
and
the
ice
keeps
melting?
A
third
study
might
give
you
an
idea.
A
team
of
scientists
drilled
a
hole
into
the
seafloor
in
west
Antarctica
and
obtained
material
from
underground,
in
which
they
found
traces
of
roots,
spores
and
pollen—
typical
products
of
a
rainforest

that
dated
back
to
90
million
years
ago.
In
other
words,
Antarctica
was
very
likely
a
rainforest
back
when
the
dinosaurs
walked
on
Earth.
But
given
the
fact
that
the
South
Pole
has
four
months
of
darkness
during
winter

even
millions
of
years
ago—scientists
believe
that
the
rainforest
could
only
exit
if
the
greenhouse
gas
concentration
were
extremely
high
back
then
to
keep
the
continent
warm
when
there
was
little
or
no
sunlight.
"We
didn't
know
that
this
Cretaceous
greenhouse
climate
was
that
extreme,"
Johann
Klages
of
the
Alfred
Wegener
Institute
in
Germany
and
a
co﹣author
of
the
research
told
the
Guardian.
"It
shows
us
what
carbon
dioxide
is
able
to
do.
"
Ice
or
no
ice,
Antarctica
will
be—and
has
always
been
fine
with
extreme
changes.
The
human
world,
however,
may
not
be.
Now,
during
the
coronavirus
lockdown,
we've
seen
the
changes
resulting
from
less
human
activity.
Hopefully,
we'll
hold
on
to
those
changes—not
for
Antarctica
or
the
planet,
but
for
ourselves.
12.What
does
the

can
be
done
to
stop
extreme
change
in

Getting
Lost
in
a
Good
Book
Can
Help
Keep
You
Healthy
I’m
a
novelist
and
it’s
obviously
in
my
interest
to
encourage
people
to
read.
But
there’s
increasing
evidence
that
reading
isn’t
just
for
pleasure,
or
merely
a
way
of
improving
literacy
skills
and
factual
knowledge.
16
Firstly,
reading
helps
to
lengthen
attention
spans
in
children
and
improves
their
ability
to
think
clearly.
17
It
is
essential
to
learn
this
skill
as
a
small
child.
The
more
they
do
it,
the
better
they
get
at
it.
Also,
reading
can
help
people
learn
to
empathize(产生共鸣;
??表同情;).
A
recent
study
at
the
University
of
Michigan
found
that
there
had
been
a
48%
decrease
in
empathy
among
college
students.
18
In
a
computer
game,
you
might
have
rescued
a
princess,
but
you
don’t
care
about
her,
you
just
want
to
win.
But
a
princess
in
a
book
has
a
past,
present
and
future,
she
has
connections
and
motivations.
We
can
relate
to
her.
We
see
the
world
through
her
eyes.
As
a
matter
of
fact,
reading
is
far
from
a
passive
activity.
Reading
exercises
the
whole
brain.
When
we
read
and
imagine
the
landscapes,
sounds,
smells
and
tastes
described
on
the
page,
the
various
areas
of
the
brain
that
are
used
to
process
these
experiences
in
real
life
are
activated,
creating
new
neural(神经)
pathways.
19
This
doesn’t
happen
when
we’re
watching
TV
or
playing
a
computer
game.
Getting
sucked
into
a
good
novel
appears
to
be
beneficial
to
our
mental
health
too.
20
Reading
not
only
avoids
feelings
of
loneliness,
it
helps
us
to
wind
down,
de-stress
and
forget
our
own
problems
for
a
while.
A.
Stories
have
a
structure
that
encourages
their
brains
to
think
in
sequence(顺序),
to
link
cause,
effect
and
significance.
B.
In
other
words,
our
brains
model(模拟)
real
experiences,
just
as
if
we
were
living
them
ourselves.
C.
When
we
read
a
good
book,
we’re
trying
to
find
out
its
main
idea.
D.
It
might
actually
be
good
for
our
mental
and
physical
health
too.
E.
But
those
who
did
not
enjoy
these
activities
had
lots
of
loss.
F.
As
the
old
saying
goes,

You’re
never
alone
with
a
book.”
G.
Encouraging
reading
could
overcome
this.

15.主旨大意题。根据第一段“While
the
human

is
suffering
from
the
novel

our

the
