B
The
idea
of
climbing
Everest
disgusted
me.
The
mountain
came
to
represent
the
opposite
of
everything
that
I
loved
and
respected
about
climbing.
What
had
once
been
the
final
mountain
climbing
goal
became
the
focus
of
a
commercial
guiding
industry.
Over
the
years,
the
crowds
at
Base
Camp
grew,
leaving
behind
tons
of
trash.
Whenever
I
was
asked
whether
I'd
climbed
Everest,
my
answer
was
always
the
same:
not
interested.
That's
probably
where
my
personal
Everest
story
would
have
ended,
were
it
not
for
an
old
friend
and
his
obsession
(念念不忘)with
one
of
the
greatest
mysteries.
In
1999,
Thom
Pollard
began
to
explore
and
found
the
remains
of
George
Mallory,
the
celebrated
British
climber
who
disappeared
while
attempting
to
be
the
first
to
climb
Everest.
But
Mallory's
partner,
Sandy
Irvine
-
and
the
camera
he
had
likely
carried
-
were
not
found.
The
mountain
climbing
world
has
been
wondering
whether
they
might
have
reached
the
top
in
1924.
Pollard's
story
moved
me.
I
began
to
pack
for
the
climb
and
expected
that
our
advanced
equipment
would
make
it
manageable,
perhaps
easy.
I
was
wrong.
On
the
highest
point
on
the
planet,
I
was
more
tired
than
I'd
ever
been
in
any
climbing.
Along
the
way,
I
continuously
tipped
my
hat,
not
just
to
Mallory
and
Irvine
but
to
anyone
who
has
the
drive
to
push
himself
or
herself
up
this
route.
My
search
was
in
vain,
but
I
began
to
reconsider
Everest.
I
witnessed
many
climbers,
who
were
much
more
than
just
self-centered
tourists.
We
shared
route
information,
weather
forecasts,
and
family
photos
-
all
united
around
common
goals.
I
went
to
Everest
to
seek
Irvine.
But
in
the
end,
I
found
something
more
difficult
to
get:
the
spirit
that
Irvine
and
Mallory
shared.
It
was
hiding
in
plain
sight,
right
where
it
has
always
been:
inside
the
brave
souls
who
risk
so
much
to
follow
in
storied
adventurers'
footsteps
up
Everest.

C
Depending
on
the
topic,
people's
opinions
can
change
from
moment
to
moment
or
last
a
lifetime.
The
factors
that
make
one
opinion
long-lasting
and
another
short-lived,
however,
are
not
always
clear.
Past
studies
have
shown
that
opinions
based
on
hard
facts
and
data
can
remain
constant
over
time,
but
new
research
published
in
the
journal
Psychological
Science
finds
that
opinions
based
on
feelings
and
emotions
can
also
stand
the
test
of
time.
As
part
of
their
study,
the
researchers
asked
more
than
1,000
people
to
what
degree
they
believed
opinions
based
on
feelings
or
emotional
reactions
were
more
stable
over
time
than
those
based
on
thinking
and
reasoned
analysis.
Only
15%
expressed
any
belief
that
opinions
based
on
emotion
would
be
more
stable
over
time.
To
test
the
role
that
emotion
plays
in
forming
long-lasting
opinions,
the
researchers
conducted
seven
independent
studies
involving
more
than
20,000
participants
in
various
real-world
situations.
The
first
survey,
which
was
conducted
the
day
after
Christmas,
measured
feelings
about
recently
received
gifts.
The
participants
were
given
a
list
of
adjectives
(形容词)to
describe
their
opinions
toward
their
gifts.
Adjectives
like
"worthwhile"
were
associated
with
a
practical
reaction
to
the
gift,
while
words
like
"delightful"
were
more
strongly
associated
with
an
emotional
reaction.
One
month
later,
the
participants
completed
a
follow-up
survey
to
test
the
endurance
(持久性)of
their
opinions.
The
results
showed
that
the
stronger
the
positive
emotional
reaction,
the
more
likely
that
opinion
remained
fixed
one
month
later.
In
the
final
test,
participants
read
one
of
two
messages
about
an
imaginary
sea
animal.
One
message
contained
broad-ranging
facts
about
the
animal
(low-emotion
condition).
The
other
message
was
about
a
swimmer's
underwater
interaction
with
the
animal
(high-emotion
condition).
The
participants
in
the
high-emotion
condition
showed
significantly
less
change
in
their
opinions
across
time.
"Emotionality
is
an
unrecognized
predictor
(预测因子)of
long-lasting
opinions,
said
Andrew
Luttrell,
a
researcher
at
Ball
State
University.
"These
findings
are
important
for
understanding
why
some
opinions
are
so
difficult
to
change
as
well
as
how
to
create
opinions
that
stick."
28.
What
did
the
survey
of
1000
people
show?
A.
Creating
long-lasting
opinions
was
a
long
process.
B.
Opinions
based
on
hard
facts
could
stand
the
test
of
time.
C.
The
role
of
emotion
was
not
recognized
by
most
of
the
people.
D.
Only
a
small
percentage
of
people
dared
to
express
their
opinions.
29.
Which
statement
will
lead
to
a
long-lasting
opinion
according
to
the
research?
A.
The
car
is
safe.
B.
The
movie
is
boring.
C.
The
book
is
valuable.
D.
The
speech
is
exciting.
30.
Which
is
true
about
the
findings
of
the
research?
A.
They
have
been
concluded
from
hard
facts.
B.
They
have
been
used
to
prove
other
predictors.
C.
They
help
understand
the
endurance
of
opinions.
D.
They
have
something
to
do
with
creative
opinions.
31.
What
can
be
a
suitable
title
for
the
text?
A.
Emotion
varies
based
on
different
facts
B.
Emotion
can
help
clarify
the
opinions
C.
Opinions
can
last
when
based
on
emotion
D.
Opinions
once
formed
are
hard
to
change
D
Cyberspace
(网络空间)is
constantly
developing
and
presenting
new
opportunities,
as
the
desire
of
businesses
to
quickly
adopt
new
technologies,
such
as
using
the
Internet
to
open
new
channels
and
adopting
cloud
services,
provides
vast
opportunity.
But,
it
also
brings
unexpected
risks
and
unintended
consequences
that
can
have
a
potentially
negative
effect.
Hardly
a
day
goes
by
without
news
of
a
new
cyber
threat.
Unfortunately,
businesses
tend
to
misjudge
how
much
risk
they
face
from
cyber-crimes
and
how
quickly
this
risk
can
develop.
For
them,
the
commercial,
reputational
and
financial
risks
that
go
with
cyberspace
presence
are
real
and
growing
every
day.
So
all
businesses
need
to
do
now
is
establish
cyber
security
within
their
organization,
right?
Establishing
cyber
security
alone
is
not
enough.
Nowadays,
it
is
not
very
difficult
for
attackers
to
break
security
and
stop
the
overall
business
system.
Preventive
measures
are
not
enough
to
stop
them.
With
the
advancement
of
technology,
hackers
(黑客)have
been
changing
and
developing.
So
business
risk
management
should
include
risk
resilience
(复原力)so
that
businesses
can
respond
to
any
damaging
cyberspace
activity.
Cyber
resilience
helps
businesses
successfully
recover
to
their
pre-attack
business
processes
and
business
operations.
Building
cyber
resilience
is
not
easy.
A
key
finding
of
an
authentic
cyber-resilience
report
is
that
no
organisation
can
respond
effectively
on
its
own
to
the
threats
from
cyberspace.
Organisations
must
work
together
to
share
intelligence
and
resources.
In
this
way,
the
quality,
usability
and
authenticity
of
intelligence
will
be
greatly
improved.
32.
What
is
the
purpose
of
the
first
paragraph?
A.
To
describe
the
development
of
cyberspace.
B.
To
show
the
great
contributions
from
business.
C.
To
explain
the
technologies
adopted
by
businesses.
D.
To
draw
attention
to
potential
dangers
from
cyberspace.
33.
What's
the
author's
concern
about
the
businesses?
A.
Awareness
of
safety.
B.
Financial
conditions.
C.
Commercial
management.
D.
Judgement
of
development.
34.
Why
is
cyber
resilience
currently
necessary?
A.
It
can
prevent
attacks.
B.
Threats
are
always
transforming.
C.
Cyber
security
doesn't
work
now.
D.
It
keeps
all
the
hackers
off
the
internet.
35.
What's
the
main
idea
of
the
last
paragraph?
A.
An
organization
alone
can
build
effective
resilience.
B.
True
resilience
requires
joined
efforts
from
organizations.
C.
There
is
a
great
amount
of
difficulty
in
building
resilience.
D.
The
cyberspace
threat
is
nothing
when
cooperation
is
used.

my

"Did

he

me.
“No,"
I

of

Dad

I

W:
Martin,
would
you
share
some
of
your
research
on
banana
growing
in
Australia?
M:
OK.
Bananas
were
among
the
first
plants
ever
to
be
brought
to
Australia.
W:
Oh,
really?
M:
Yes,
according
to
my
research,
the
Cavendish
banana,
the
type
brought
in
to
Australia,
first
grew
in
China
but
they
were
taken
to
London
before
they
got
to
Australia.
W:
What
happened
at
that
time?
M:
Well,
an
Englishman
was
so
fond
of
bananas
that
he
grew
them
in
his
hothouse,
a
place
where
the
banana
had
to
be
grown
in
England
because
of
the
cool
climate.
He
was
the
one
responsible
for
growing
the
banana
introduced
in
to
Australia.
W:
I
see.
And
we’ve
been
growing
them
ever
since?
M:
Yes.
W:
Are
they
hard
to
grow?
M:
Well,
yes.
To
get
one
bunch
of
bananas
per
tree
took
up
to
three
years
at
first.
But
this
period
is
greatly
reduced
with
modern
growing
methods.
W:
So
how
long
does
it
take
now?
One
year?
Two
years?
M:
No,
around
15
months
in
good
conditions.
After
the
fruit
has
been
removed,
the
plants
are
cut
down.
W:
Then
what
can
we
do
about
them?
M:
It
is
an
interesting
question.

Recently,
I
have
noticed
that
my
students
often
rely
on
translators
to
help
them
with
new
vocabulary.
Students
like
them
because
they
can
see
new
words
in
both
their
native

English.
Unfortunately,
translators
are
not
all
created
equally
and
I
have
seen
some
rather
strange
translations,

I

use
online
dictionaries
to
help
them.
Here
I’ll
talk
about
some
of
the
online
dictionaries
I
have
found.
Let’s
start
with
standard
dictionaries.
Merriam-Webster,
Cambridge,
and
Oxford
all
have
online
dictionaries
for
English
learners.
They
all
have
British
and
American
English
pronunciations.
But
Oxford
has
a
nice
additional
feature,
where
a
small
window
called
“Search
Results,”
contains
words
related
to
your
search.
There
are
also
a
number
of
picture
dictionaries
available
online.
One
that
could
be
used
for
beginners
is
ESOL
Help.
The
clear
pictures
make
it
great
for
students
to
view
on
their
own.
For
middle-level
and
advanced
students,
try
Visuwords.
It
shows
how
words
relate
to
one
another.
Lastly,
I
have
found
a
site
called
Reverso,
which
contains
an
English
dictionary
built
by
its
users.
It
represents
new
words
in
very
simple,
easy-to-understand
language.
