In
2000,
a
tiny
goose
was
left
behind
by
his
parents
in
our
driveway.
He
was
too
young
to
fly
and
join
the
adults.
So,
we
had
to
bring
him
onto
our
back
porch
to
ensure
his
safety.
A
week
later,
the
young
goose
had
clearly
decided
we
were
his
new
family.
We
called
the
little
guy
Peeper.
A
year
passed
and
we
were
accustomed
to
the
life
of
taking
care
of
him.
Peeper
slept
on
our
back
porch
each
night.
My
dad
would
spray
off
all
the
goose’s
droppings
daily.
Part
of
this
ritual(例行的事)included
dad
throwing
Peeper
up
into
the
air
so
he
could
fly
a
loop
around
the
house,
coming
back
again
once
the
porch
was
clean.
One
evening,
my
dad
threw
him
up
again,
but
this
time,
Peeper
just
flew
off
and
never
back
again.
Twenty
years
passed,
and
Peeper
became
a
fond
memory
for
my
family.
Geese
live
to
be
around
25
years
old,
are
very
loyal,
and
never
forget
their
first
home.
Even
so,
it
came
as
a
total
shock
to
me
when,
in
2019,
an
aging
adult
goose
made
his
way
back
to
my
family
home.
At
first,
I
assumed
it
was
just
another
goose.
And
yet,
something
about
the
lone
male
seemed
oddly
familiar
to
me.
After
two
weeks
of
the
goose
coming
back
repeatedly,
it
became
clear
to
me
that
this
wasn't
a
random
goose.
He
did
all
of
the
same
things
Peeper
used
to,
like
trying
to
come
in
through
the
front
door
and
sleeping
in
our
enclosed
pool
area.
In
addition
to
looking
like
Peeper's
old
ways,
this
goose
also
responded
to
the
name
Peeper.
Much
to
my
amazement,
my
old
best
friend
had
returned,
20
years
later.
This
experience
has
been
as
meaningful
to
me
as
anything
in
my
life.
I
hope
that
my
children,
someday,
have
the
opportunity
to
connect
with
nature
and
a
wild
being
in
this
same
way.
People
long
for
connection
with
the
natural
world.
Through
Peeper,
I
have
learned
so
much
about
myself
and
about
the
nature
of
love.
24.What

drive
him
away.

took
good

geese
from
this
text?
A.They
depend
on
human
very
much.
B.They
always

the
first
home.
C.They
know
how
to
repay
human
beings.
D.They
are
good
at
flying
long
distances.
26.What
does
the
author
think
of
the
reunion
with
the
goose?
A.It
is
controversial.
B.It
is
quite
natural.
C.It
is
of
significance.
D.It
is
accidental.
27.What
can
be
a
suitable
title
for
this
text?
A.The
Reunion
of
a
Family
and
a
Goose
B.A
Goose
with
a
Great
Memory
C.A
Goose
Will
Eventually
Fly
Away
D.The
Desire

Get

C
Are
you
ever
tempted
to
check
your
phone
in
class?
It
seems
harmless
enough
to
take
a
quick
look.
But
a
new
study
finds
that
college
students
don't
concentrate
as
well
when
devices
(设备)
are
allowed
in
class.
That
was
true
even
among
students
who
did
not
use
the
devices
themselves.
And
college
students
are
likely
not
to
be
the
only
ones
affected,
say
Arnold
Glass
and
Mengxue
Kang.
Both
of
the
study's
authors
are
psychologists
who
work
at
Rutgers
University
in
Piscataway,
N.
J.
Glass
says
he's
sure
he
would
find
the
same
results
if
he
had
studied
middle
or
high
school
students.
Why?
The
effects
he
and
Kang
saw
are
likely
due
to
basic
human
tendencies
ones
that
don't
change
with
age.
These
researchers
had
noticed
their
students
were
using
laptops
and
phones
during
class.
And
they
suspected
there
could
be
a
problem
with
that.
The
human
brain
simply
isn't
wired
to
do
several
things
at
once.
People
like
to
think
they
can
multitask.
But
the
brain
actually
can
focus
attention
on
just
one
thing
at
a
time.
When
people
switch
between
tasks,
their
brains
can't
keep
up
with
everything.
So
there
will
be
a
delay
as
their
attention
moves
from
one
task
to
another.
Someone
who
is
listening
to
one
person
talk,
for
instance,
can't
also
listen
to
another.
They
can't
even
listen
and
read
at
the
same
time.
So
what
happens
when
students
try
to
listen
to
a
lecture
while
they
check
their
email?
Or
participate
in
a
classroom
discussion
while
liking
a
friend's
photos?
Glass
and
Kang
thought
this
kind
of
multitasking
might
make
it
harder
for
students
to
learn.
Their
new
data
now
confirm
that
it
does.
28.What
do
we
know
about
Arnold
Glass
and
Mengxue
Kang?
A.They
did
studies
separately.

colleagues
and
partners.
C.They
surveyed
high
school
students.
D.They
approve
of
students'
using
phones.

Beijing
will
use
facial
recognition
tools
to
speed
up
security
checks
in
the
city's
overcrowded
metro,
using
a
"credit
system"
to
sort
passengers
into
different
channels.
Long
queues
and
passengers
arguing
with
staff
over
slow
security
procedures
are
common
sites
during
rush
hour
in
the
metro
system
of
this
big
city
with
20
million
citizens.
The
city
plans
to
fix
cameras
that
will
scan
the
faces
of
passengers
as
they
enter
a
subway
station
and
sort
them
into
different
security
channels,
said
Zhan
Minghui,
director
of
the
Beijing
Rail
Traffic
Control
Center.
He
said
the
plan
involves
creating
a
"passenger
credit
system",
and
individuals
on
a
"white
list"
will
be
offered
rapid
screening
service.
Those
who
receive
"abnormal
feedback"
after
their
faces
are
scanned
will
have
to
go
through
extra
checks.
Zhan
did
not
offer
details
on
the
criteria
used
to
sort
passengers
or
what
could
cause
that
type
of
feedback.
The
technique
aims
to
improve
the
efficiency
of
security
checks
and
includes
both
body
checks
and
luggage
screening
when
large
numbers
of
passengers
enter
the
station.
The
city's
subway
system
currently
handles
over
12
million
trips
on
a
work
day
and
the
number
is
expected
to
increase
to
17
million
trips
by
2022.
Zhan
did
not
offer
a
timetable
for
rolling
out
the
technology.
Facial
recognition
is
gaining
popularity
across
China,
where
it
is
being
used
for
nearly
everything
anywhere
from
supermarket
checkouts
to
monitoring.
While
researchers
have
warned
of
the
privacy
risks
associated
with
gathering
facial
recognition
data,
consumers
have
widely
embraced
the
technology.
The
Universal
Studios
amusement
park
under
construction
in
Beijing
recently
said
it
will
admit
visitors
without
a
ticket﹣
thanks
to
cameras
that
will
scan
their
faces
to
determine
if
they
paid
for
entry.
32.Why
does
Beijing
subway
plan
to
use
facial
recognition
system?
A.To
make
the
subway
more
safe.
B.To
accelerate
security
checks.
C.To
reduce
the
number
of
employees.
D.To
attract
more
and
more
passengers.
33.What
is
the
third
paragraph
intended
to
tell
us
about
the
new
technique?
A.Its
working
process
B.The
target
group
C.Its
advantages
D.Its
problems
34.What
can
we
infer
from
paragraph

A.The
system
is
mainly
used

and
more
people
will
take
metro
trips.

available
in
a
few
years.
35.What
is
the
researchers'
attitude
towards
using
facial
recognition
technology?

The
Pursuit
of
Happiness
There
are
plenty
of
reasons
to
seek
happiness.
Research
has
shown
that
arthritis
(关节炎)
patients
who
have
a
“positive
affect”
are
able
to
take
more
daily
steps
than
those
who
are
unhappy.
36.Plus,
experiencing
joy
just
feels
good.
So,
here
are
some
small,
surprising
ways
to
feel
happier.
According
to
a
2014
study
in
Psychological
Science,
writing
in
a
journal
can
make
people
happy,
even
if
the
entries
are
ordinary.
We
tend
to
forget
the
little
things
in
life
that
bring
us
pleasure.
37.
Another
thing
you
can
do
to
keep
happy
is
to
have
some
kind
of
goal
or
principle
that
orients
your
life
and
moves
you
into
the
future.
38.Either
way,
it
should
be
one
that
motivates
you
and
organizes
the
activities
of
your
day
around
something
greater
than
yourself.
39.“Literary
fiction
is
shown
to
increase
brain
activity
and
improve
our
capacity
for
empathy,
compassion
and
understanding,”
says
Neil
Pasricha,
the
author
of
seven

Not
a
day
when
I
have
doubted
my
love
for
this
girl.
We
got
to
enjoy
our
42nd
wedding
anniversary,
while
41
the
beautiful
Mayan
towns
this
past
week,
where
we
had
breakfast
and
I
42
some
photos.
I
am
so
fortunate
to
have
Anne
enjoying
these
adventures
as
my
43
during
the
last
10
years
that
we
have
been
travelling
photographing
and
exploring
Central
American
countries.
When
Anne
was
in
her
early
30s,a
strange
44
attacked
her
body.
Within
a
couple
of
years
her
joints
became
inflexible
and
couldn't
move
45
.
The
doctors
foretold
that
she
would
probably
be
in
a(n)
4
6
by
her
mid
40s
﹣
and
we
had
all
this
47
planned
for
our
life
once
the
kids
48
home.
Anne
49
to
make
the
best
of
it,
and
refuses
to
50
the
illness
and
the
severe
pain
that
she
has
at
times.
Her
yearly
51
by
her
doctor,shows
slow
advancement
52
to
the
early
years
of
the
disease
setting
in.
The
doctor's
53
to
Anne
for
the
past
few
years
is
"keep
doing
what
you
are
doing".Of
course
I
am
her
right
hand
man,
54
for
oncoming
cars
that
she
can't
55
her
head
to
see,
and
putting
her
socks
on
because
she
can't
reach
her
56
.
I
have
to
stop
at
times
as
she
57
her
breath.And
so
we
have
a
pile
of
58
while
exploring,documenting,climbing
volcanoes,and
59
endless
miles
in
hilly
towns
and
cities
each
day.
Anyway
this
is
the
60
of
my
life
as
we
head
on
to
43
years
of
loving
and
supporting
each
other.
