The
traditional
British
pub
is
part
of
the
scenery
of
British
life.
At
a
recent
count,
there
are
around
50,
000
of
them
in
the
UK.
The
oldest—Ye
Olde
Fighting
Cocks
in
St.
Albans—was
set
up
in
about
793.
Because
of
their
abundance,
the
names
pubs
take
are
designed
to
be
memorable,
but
more
than
that,
they
are
designed
to
be
visual.
Outside
any
traditional
pub
worthy
of
its
title,
you’ll
find
a
hanging
signboard
with
an
unusual
and
uncommon
illustration(插图)
that
represents
the
name
of
the
business.
The
practice
is
so
well
established
that
even
new
pubs
copy
it.
But
why
do
they
exist
at
all?
The
first
British
pub
signs
were
created
in
the
12th
century
and
were
simple
representations
of
beer
containers
and
other
brewing-related
equipment
used
to
tell
passers-by
that
establishments
sold
beer.
This
was
Britain
in
the
dark
ages,
when
education
was
in
short
supply.
Since
most
of
the
population
was
unable
to
read,
pub
signs
were
used
to
inform
would-be
customers
that
they
could
find
a
drink
inside.
The
earliest
uses
of
pub
names
would
reference
the
sign
directly.
People
would
appoint
to
meet
at
“the
sign
of
the
Eagle
and
Child”
rather
than
at
“the
Eagle
and
Child”.
Today
the
tradition
remains
unchanged
largely
out
of
respect
for
the
past,
but
many
pub
signs
do
have
some
functionality.
Remote
country
pubs
often
use
signboards
to
point
the
way
to
their
doors.
It’s
part
of
British
culture
that’s
rapidly
disappearing—
more
than
20,
000
pubs
have
closed
since
1980—but
for
now
there
are
still
more
than
enough.
You
can
take
a

to
appreciate
the
history
and
symbolism
behind
a

A
(2021·三明高二检测)
It
was
the
summer
of
1965.
DeLuca,
then
17,
visited
Peter
Buck,
a
family
friend.
Buck
asked
DeLuca
about
his
plans
for
the
future.
“I’m
going
to
college,
but
I
need
a
way
to
pay
for
it,

DeLuca
recalls,
saying
“Buck
said,
’You
should
open
a
sandwich
shop.
’”
That
afternoon,
they
agreed
to
be
partners.
And
they
set
a
goal:
to
open
32
stores
in
ten
years.
After
doing
some
research,
Buck
wrote
a
check
for
$1,
000.
DeLuca
rented
a
storefront
(店面)
in
Connecticut,
and
when
they
couldn’t
cover
their
start-up
costs,
Buck
kicked
in
another
$1,
000.
But
business
didn’t
go
smoothly
as
they
expected.
DeLuca
says,
“After
six
months,
we
were
doing
poorly,
but
we
didn’t
know
how
badly,
because
we
didn’t
have
any
financial
controls.

All
he
and
Buck
knew
was
that
their
sales
were
lower
than
their
costs.
DeLuca
was
managing
the
store
and
going
to
the
University
of
Bridgeport
at
the
same
time.
Buck
was
working
at
his
day
job
as
a
nuclear
physicist
in
New
York.
They’d
meet
Monday
evenings
and
brainstorm
ideas
for
keeping
the
business
running.
“We
convinced
ourselves
to
open
a
second
store.
We
figured
we
could
tell
the
public,
’We
are
so
successful,
we
are
opening
a
second
store.
’”
And
they
did—in
the
spring
of
1966.
Still,
it
was
a
lot
of
learning
by
trial
and
error.
But
the
partners’
learn-as-you-go
approach
turned
out
to
be
their
greatest
strength.
Every
Friday,
DeLuca
would
drive
around
and
hand-deliver
the
checks
to
pay
their
suppliers.
“It
probably
took
me
two
and
a
half
hours
and
it
wasn’
t
necessary,
but
as
a
result,
the
suppliers
got
to
know
me
very
well,
and
the
personal
relationships
established
really
helped
out,

DeLuca
says.
And
having
a
goal
was
also
important.
“There
are
so
many
problems
that
can
get
you
down.
You
just
have
to
keep
working
toward
your
goal,

DeLuca
adds.
DeLuca
ended
up
founding
Subway
Sandwich,
the
multimillion-dollar
restaurant
chain.

he

He
has

He
has

he

But
despite

this,
most
people

Otway

his

it

the

that
really
gave
him
his

Otway
wasn’t
the
greatest

his
songs

fun,

his

were

Not

Although

Some
losers
become
winners,
while
others
stay
as
losers.
When
people
fail,
they
don’t
become
losers
instantly.
They
become
losers
as
soon
as
they
start
to
victimize
themselves.
 1
For
example,
they
often
tell
themselves
and
others
things
like
“If
I
were
young,
I’d
have
got
this”,
or
“If
they’d

But
if
they’re

they’ll

that
these

the
things
they

to
justify
(证明……有理)
their
failures.
Failure
is
failure.
Actually,
the
reason
why
they
failed
was
that
they
failed
to
use
the
failure
as
a
way
of
learning
and
improving
themselves.
?
It’s
natural
for
you
to

and
use
them
as
evidence
that
you’ll

succeed.

For

When

At
just
40
years
old,
hip-hop
star
Kasseem
Dean,
more
popularly
known
as
Swizz
Beatz,
has
amassed(积累)a
track
record,
lifestyle
and
nearly$70
million
net
worth
that
would
inspire
most
of
us
to
retire
early.
So
why
does
Dean
continue
to
both
work
extremely
hard
and
try
projects
that
come
with
the
risk
of
rejection?
During
our
interview
for
Uncommon
Drive,
a
video
series
for
USA&Main
that
seeks
to
find
out
the
motivations
and
magic
of
world-class
business
people,
Dean
provided
a
memorable
answer:
“You
only
have
so
much
time—once
it’s
gone
you
don’t
get
it
back.
Don’t
focus
on
money;
focus
on
building
something
greater
than
yourself.
If
you’re
not
making
history,
you’re
wasting
your
time
on
Earth.

When
you
look
at
his
answer,
you
will
learn
two
important
lessons.
The
first
is
in“making
history”.
Doing
so
requires
awareness.
You
must
fully
understand
what
has
and
has
not
been
achieved
in
the
market
you’ve
entered.
Dean
makes
every
effort
with
the
goal
of
creating
something
important
that
has
not
been
done
before
and
will
be
remembered
for
its
impact
beyond
his
years.
The
second
part
of
his
statement
is
just
as
powerful.
In
this
interview,
he
never
once
said
he
is“trying”to
make
history.
Instead,
he
has
told
himself
that
no
matter
what
difficulty
there
is,
it’s
just
going
to
happen.
“I’m
going
to
make
history.
”Dean
said.
After
talking
to
Dean
for
nearly
45
minutes,
it
was
clear
to
me
that
he
has
removed
all
ego(自我)from
a
statement
that
might
otherwise
be
misread
as
false
pride.
I
believe
it’s
a
brilliant
hack—rather
than
focus
on
all
the
reasons
why
a
project
can’t
be
realized,
he
has
convinced
himself
of
the
possibility.
