When I graduated from high school, my family had a business so I never thought about getting a college education. I went straight from my high school graduation to working for my father. After 24 years of ups and downs(mostly downs) I decided that I wanted to return to school and earn a degree in Business Administration.
Some told me it was too late. Others told me I was too old. Others told me I would never be able to make it. I didn’t have any money and I couldn’t go to school, work full time and take care of my son. But inside I was told something different. My heart told me that if it were meant to be that, God would make it happen.
One day while looking up information on how to go about getting into college, a little window appeared on my screen. It said, “Do you think you are too old to go back to school ” I clicked on the box and there I found an online college. I spoke to someone in the school and they helped me get loans to pay for it. They told me that I could take classes any way I wanted to that I could go to work and not have my work and school cause a conflict. I also found out that I could attend classes from home so that I could be there for my son.
Now today, almost 2 years later, I will not only be graduating but graduating with honors. I have been on the Dean’s list for almost the whole time I have been in college. So for anyone who thinks that something is out of reach or impossible, remember this: If I would have listened to those people who told me I couldn’t do it, then today would just be Saturday.

Turtles, the only reptile (爬行动物)that has a shell and no teeth, are found in many parts of the world with temperate or tropical climates. Some kinds live on land, others in fresh water or salt water. Since turtles are cold-hlooded, they can’t live in places that are cold all year long. Most sea turtles feed on small sea animals, such as sponges. They also feed on sea plants and grasses.
Sea turtles’ senses are very sharp. Their sense of smell is the strongest sense. Some scientists believe that sea turtles have a stronger sense of smell than a dog has. They use their keen noses to find food and to smell a nearby enemy. Sea turtles can hear well, too. They can hear low-pitched sounds about as well as a person can hear them. Sea turtles also have good eyesight. They can see clearly when they are swimming through the water. Their eyes help them spot small food in the open seas.
Turtles are probably the longest-living group of animals, some living 150 years or more. Full-grown turtles are different in size from 9 centimeters long and less than one pound in weight to 2.4 to 2.7 meters long and weighing up to 1,500 pounds. Most species of turtles grow throughout life, although slowly after the first 5 to 10 years. The most dangerous part of a sea turtle’s life is its first 10 years. During those years, the turtle is small and not very fast. If it survives this period, it can live a long life.
Turtles are popular pets, but they are potential carriers of dangerous bacteria. If you find a turtle in the wild, do not take it home. A wild turtle already has a home range. A turtle knows all the rocks, logs, trees, and ponds in its range. If you take a turtle from its home, it will suffer from stress and could die. Additionally, wild turtles can sometimes carry diseases that you can catch.

Joan is 22 and has just begun her work as a secretary in a big company. “Everyone says their first years at work were the best time of their life; they made lots of friends and went to parties. But for me, it’s not like that. I am quite shy and find it hard to mix. I feel lonely and apart. I hardly see my friends.”
People can experience loneliness for many reasons and many life events are associated with it, like the lack of friendship relations during childhood and adolescence, or the physical absence of meaningful people around a person are a few causes for loneliness. At the same time, loneliness may be a symptom of another social or psychological problem, such as chronic (长期的)depression.
Chronic loneliness is a serious, life-threatening condition. At least one study has clearly linked it with an increased risk of cancer, especially for those who hide their loneliness from the outside world, and it is also associated with increased risk of stroke and heart discuses. Loneliness has been linked with depression, and is thus a risk factor for suicide(自杀). Loneliness can also play a part in alcoholism and drug abuse.
There are many different ways used to treat loneliness. The first step that most doctors recommend to patients is therapy. Therapy is a common and effective way of treating loneliness and is often successful. During therapy, emphasis is put on understanding the cause of the problem, reversing(改变)the negative thoughts, feelings, and attitudes resulting from the problem, and depression is pet therapy, as it is more formally known. Studies and surveys indicate that animals companions such as dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs can ease feelings of depression and loneliness among some sufferers. Beyond the companionship the animal itself provides, there may also be increased opportunities for socializing with other pet owners.
