They want to have happiness, and want to know they have a lot of it. But happiness, like air or water, is a 1 thing to grasp in one’s hand. So how does one know if they have it? Is it just a 2 ? And if someone does not feel happy, how can they go about 3 that feeling? Happiness is not 4 by material wealth. A new car or television, a waterskiing boat or a three-level house is not 5 to joyful feelings. They are status symbols, surely, but they don’t 6 a happy life. People who have wealth can be 7 , just as the poor can be living joyfully. Possessions can be 8 and lost, and with that comes fear. And fear 9 leads to happiness. So if it isn’t “stuff” that gains happiness, then what can? Well, 10 can. People need to have a sense of purpose. These people often have a feeling of satisfaction. They sense they were put on this planet for a 11 . To each person, this purpose can be 12 . Maybe they were meant to teach. Maybe they were meant to learn. And goals can be 13 things, like taking an extra moment each day to breathe. But having 14 in life, a feeling of moving forward, can make people feel happy. But taking that forward motion too 15 can be a bad thing. Success at the expense of everything else leads to the 16 of happiness. Life requires 17 . And people who understand there is a balance between work and 18 are more in tune with the universe and, therefore, better able to achieve happiness. Life with a bit of humor is more 19 . So people can be happy if they have something to strive for and something to 20 about. 1.A.vital B.hard C.strange D.magic 2.A.feeling B.sign C.gift D.reward 3.A.ignoring B.replacing C.achieving D.checking 4.A.measured B.exchanged C.bought D.controlled 5.A.close B.similar C.harmful D.equal 6.A.change B.guarantee C.start D.influence 7.A.proud B.stressed C.rude D.unhappy 8.A.borrowed B.robbed C.gained D.returned 9.A.rarely B.always C.even D.still 10.A.money B.jobs C.love D.goals 11.A.moment B.trip C.reason D.position 12.A.rewarding B.different C.challenging D.impractical 13.A.meaningful B.small C.instructive D.significant 14.A.creativity B.power C.wealth D.progress 15.A.far B.high C.late D.slowly 16.A.result B.change C.opposite D.imagination 17.A.balance B.care C.emotion D.friendship 18.A.music B.play C.art D.study 19.A.different B.worthwhile C.beneficial D.pleasant 20.A.worry B.talk C.laugh D.think A In ancient times, our ancestors relied on stars to guide them on a clear night. Today, we have navigational systems to help us find our way, with the latest being the Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS). The BDS is entirely built by Chinese engineers. With the launch of the last satellite from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center on June 23, the global network of 59 satellites has been completed. On July 31, Beidou started providing full-scale global services. It’s difficult to imagine the dramatic impact those satellites, orbiting the Earth, have on our daily lives. When you unlock one of Hellobike’s bicycles, you are using the BDS. The popular bike-sharing company came out with two new bike models this year that are equipped with the positioning service. “The intelligent lock on each bike receives Beidou satellite signals and sends positioning information to the data center, which will help collect big data on the bikes and estimate users’ riding demands in advance according to the data,” Chu Yiqun, a manager of Hellobike told Xinhua News Agency. Users can also find shared bikes more accurately thanks to Beidou’s global positioning accuracy of 2.34 meters. However, the BDS doesn’t just work one way. As the country’s largest space-based system and one of four global navigation networks, along with the United States’ GPS, Russia’s GLONASS and the European Union’s Galileo, Beidou adopts a unique two-way communication system, including its ability to receive messages sent by people from areas with poor communication signals. Obviously, this exclusive function isn’t designed for users to chat online. Instead, it plays a role when disasters occur and communications are blocked. After the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, all ground-based communication facilities were interrupted. Though the first generation of Beidou could only send 120 characters in a single message at that time, communication between affected areas and rescue centers was successful. Now, Beidou’s messaging capacity has been increased to 1,200 Chinese characters in a single message. It is widely used in disaster alarms, automatic identification and information release. As Sun Jiadong, former chief designer of the BDS said: “The application of Beidou is merely limited by imagination.” 21.What can we know about Beidou from the passage? A.It’s able to provide worldwide coverage for navigation. B.Its last satellite was launched in Xichang on July 31. C.It’s one of the five global navigation networks. D.It’s jointly developed by Chinese and foreign engineers. 22.Why is Hellobike mentioned in paragraph 3? A.To present the benefits and limitations of the BDS. B.To highlight the high positioning accuracy of the BDS. C.To show how the BDS makes people’s daily lives easier. D.To explain the unique way in which the BDS works. 23.What is the function of Beidou’s two-way communication system? A.To collect instant feedback sent by global users. B.To allow users to chat online more conveniently. C.To make communication more fun and efficient. D.To help people when communication signals are weak. 24.What do Sun Jiadong’s words in the last paragraph imply? A.Beidou stimulates users’ imagination. B.Beidou may be more helpful than we know. C.Beidou is currently limited in application. D.Beidou needs to be further perfected. B It’s half past 2 in the early morning. You’ve been working hard at work and a strong desire for chocolate overcomes you just at this moment. You try to busy yourself to make it go away. But it doesn’t. Here is another situation. Perhaps you are not feeling well. The only thing you want to eat is a big bowl of chicken soup, like your mom used to make when you were sick as a child. Food cravings are a strong desire for a specific type of food. And they are normal. Scientists at the website How Stuff Works compare hunger and cravings this way. Hunger is a fairly simple connection between the stomach and the brain. They even call it simply “stomach hunger”. When our stomachs burn up all of the food we have eaten, a hormone(荷尔蒙)sends a message to one part of the brain for more food, which regulates our most basic body functions such as thirst, hunger and sleep. The brain then produces a chemical to start the appetite and you eat. Hunger is a function of survival. A craving is more complex. It activates(使活跃)brain areas related to emotion, memory and reward. These are the same areas of the brain activated during drug-craving studies. So, some scientists call food cravings “mind hunger”. People often crave foods that are high in fat and sugar. Foods that are high in fat or high in sugar produce chemicals in the brain. These chemicals give us feelings of pleasure. In a 2007 study, researchers at Cambridge University found that “dieting or restricted eating generally increases the possibility of food craving.” So, the more you deny yourself a food that you want, the more you may crave it. However, fasting is a bit different. They found that eating no food at all for a short period of time lessened food cravings. So, the next time you crave something very specific, know that your brain may be more to blame than your stomach. 25.The article begins with two situations in the first paragraph to ______. A.deepen the understanding of hunger B.report the discovery of craving study C.introduce the topic of the whole passage D.remind readers of their own special food 26.What do we learn about food craving? A.It shows food is linked to feelings. B.It ensures a person survives hunger. C.It means the stomach functions well. D.It proves the brain decides your appetite. 27.What’s the likely result of dieting? A.The decrease of chemicals. B.The increase of food desire. C.The refusal of fat and sugar. D.The disappearance of appetite. 28.What does the passage mainly discuss? A.The functions of brain areas. B.What hunger is all about. C.The findings of food craving. D.What dieting may bring us. C Coca-Cola, which reportedly produced more than 3 million tons of plastic packaging in 2017, announced Thursday it wants to “help fix the world’s plastic waste problem one community (社区) at a time.” The soda giant is doing so by providing $ 5.4 million for recycling programs in cities like Atlanta, Boston, Denver and Houston. In these cities, partners, like The Green Blue Institute and The Recycling Partnership, which receive the money, will work together to improve recycling rates. “We focus on areas where we have the ability to make the biggest influence on communities through the funding and expert skills of Coca-Cola employees,” Carlos Pagoagoa, Coca-Cola’s group director of community partnerships, said in a statement. “In each city, local partners will work together to identify barriers to recycling on a local level and test a range of solutions,” he added. “We hope the learnings from these ‘model markets’ can offer solutions to other cities facing similar challenges.” As part of the effort, The Recycling Partnership and the city of Atlanta, where the cola company’s headquarters are based, will send street teams out to open recycling carts and leave citizens cards informing them what they can and can’t recycle, and let them know how their efforts work. “Two of the most urgent problems with recycling in the U. In these cities, partners, like The Green Blue Institute and The Recycling Partnership, which receive the money, will work together to improve recycling rates. 故选A。 31. As part of the effort, The Recycling Partnership and the city of Atlanta, where the cola company’s headquarters are based, will send street teams out to open recycling carts and leave citizens cards informing them what they can and can’t recycle, and let them know how their efforts work. We know from the success of Atlanta in 2017 that the citizens want to recycle, and that communicating with them in the street works. 故选A。 故it 改为which。 2. thanks to多亏了,需把for改成to。故for 改为to。 3. 故去掉was。 4. 故very改为so。 5. 故as后面加上a。 10. from then on从那时起。故now 改为then。 books与print之间是动宾关系, 用过去分词短语printed at the time作定语修饰books,所以填printed。 41. have influence on意为“对……
