He was born in Wuxi in 1893.

阿炳自幼受到乡土音乐的熏陶，对音乐非常喜爱。在父亲的教习下，他十六七岁便学会了结构繁复、技法多变的梵音，吹、拉、弹、打、唱、念样样精通。
年过而立之后，阿炳的境遇急转直下。先是因染上吸食鸦片等恶习导致生活潦倒，随后患上眼疾，双目相继失明，再到后来便流落街头卖艺，生活十分贫困。底层的生活让他历尽了人世的艰辛，饱尝了旧社会的辛酸屈辱。
但才艺出众的阿炳，经常通过拉二胡、弹琵琶、说新闻的方式来表达自己的爱恨情仇，通过音乐揭露当时的黑暗。他把自己对痛苦生活的感受通过音乐反映出来，产生了著名二胡曲《二泉映月》。

Sad but Beautiful
Last night one of my Chinese friends took me to a

concert of Chinese folk music. The piece which was

played on the erhu especially moved me. The music

was strangely beautiful, but under the beauty I

sensed a strong sadness and pain. The piece had a

simple name, Erquan Yingyue(Moon Reflected on

Second Spring), but it was one of the most moving
