Greeting Good morning, everyone. Today we will learn usage of modal verbs—must, may, might, could. 2.Lead-in The 2022 Men’s World Cup is ongoing in Qatar. There is a very hot topic—you can’t miss Chinese elements in and around the stadiums. In the following sentences, which sentence states the wrong fact One could take a nap in a “mobile hotel” built by Chinese engineers. Soccer players might have matches in stadiums built by Chinese construction companies. One may buy the cute mascot （吉祥物）of La’eeb made in China. None of them is wrong. China is impressing the world people with its advanced technology. 3.Presentation Some students are voicing their opinions about the ongoing World Cup. Pay attention to the bold words. He could be ill because he turned pale(Bob). Five-time winners Brazil must be favorites to lift the World Cup trophy in Qatar. (Lucy). This team might not win in the group stage if they don’t change their strategy. (Mark) Now, answer these questions. What do the words in bold indicate: an order, a request, ability, or a possibility Will the meaning of sentence (a) change if we replace “could” with “must” or “might ” Bold words indicates a possibility. Must don’t state the fact. Lucy is predicting who the winner is. Bob and Mark are both stating the possibility of an event. Which modal verb describes the largest possibility and the smallest possibility “Must” shows that you think something is quite true. Use “might” or “could” to show that something is possibly true. We can replace “could” with “might” instead of “must”. Do you remember the relation between “may” and “might”, “Might” is more tactful in tone and has the smaller possibility than “may”. 4.Practice 练习1：Now rewrite the underlined sentences in the conversation using must/may/might/could. (书上) “I expect you are feeling tired now.” We can rewrite “You must be feeling tired now”. Because Chris stayed up late to make preparations for this party. Jean said. “It’s possibly him.” Therefore, we can rewrite “It may/might/could be him.” “I’m sure that’s Lucy”. She is very sure and confident. It can turn into “That must be Lucy”. The last one, “Oh, they’re waving at us! Maybe they’re from our school.” We can say “They may/ might/could be from our school.” 练习2：Fill in the blanks with “must” “could” “might” It must be raining, for all walkers are carrying umbrellas. Wearing a N95 mask could/might reduce the risk of infecting novel coronavirus. He is away from the school. He could/might be sick. John, you must not play with the knife, you could hurt yourself. These are answers. It’s very easy, right We need to focus on whether someone is sure about this thing. And how much he is sure. 5.Production Now, let’s play a game. I will give you some clues about a figure. And you must answer with a complete sentence. “It must/could/might/can’t be… because he…” Now you are divided into four groups. The group guessing the most figures is the winner. Here we go. The first person—Zhong Nanshan T: This person can sing, dance, and play basketball. We grasp the usage of modal verbs which shows possibility or speculations. Must, may, might, could all have speculative uses, of which might is the least likely, Must most likely.
